90s & super dry on the border of 3b/4a. Your summer break works well - at a time I'm too busy in the garden to watch videos, I'm not missing anything on your channel. About the time you start ramping up, much of my food preservation will be done. My fall planting went in a couple of weeks ago, and I limited it to things for fresh eating, so not too much work there. Good to see you again, and I trust Miss Phoebe is well.

You've got a great harvest there! We're doing the same with raspberries. Every day and half full bowl. Been freezing them for fall desserts. We're behind you in the season. Nothing to harvest right now but herbs and zucchini and lettuce, but that's starting to bolt. Can't seem to share enough. Didn't realize how big iceberg lettuce could get! They don't come that size in the grocery store! It's awesome!

I just returned to Texas after 3 weeks in Alaska and Colorado with my sons. My garden took a hit as well in this heat. My family watered for me but only enough to keep things alive. 3 of my 4 muscadine vines have all crispy leaves. I lost all my elderberry fruit but the trees survived. There were various other hits but I’ve been upping my watering to which this heat is no friend of. So, I definitely know how you feel Scott. This has definitely lit a fire under me to try and set up some type of automatic irrigation system. You try to stay cool and I look forward to your return once some of this heat lifts. Blessings! 💜

The muscadines look amazing. Been way too hot here too. I need to set up what you have for your muscadines. Still unsure if the bronze are true muscadines heard they are scuppernongs and not true muscadines. Going to rewatch some of your play list videos for setting up this one bronze plant I have and get some of the purples too. Hope all works out with the extra stuff you have going on Scott. Seems to be the year for “extra” stuff. 🙏🏼

A few years back I started doing a fall garden with hybrid determinate tomatoes (70-75 day), green beans, cucumbers (I love pickles), cabbage and various brassicas. And I am amazed by the success I have had. It seems a lot easier in the fall so load up those beds see what does well for you. You've been a little down for some time so you need a good success story to put some fuel in the tank!! 🏋️♂️ Just think about some fall tomato soup... fresh green beans and cornbread. Oh man, I'm gonna go plant some seeds right now! Oh, I just remembered I also take potatoes that start sprouting in the cupboard and plant those in grow bags or buckets. Even if the potatoes don't get large, they are still fantastic in soups or stew.

Scott one thing that has greatly been paying off for me during our sultry summers is sowing a thick stand of Milo "sorghum". Ill even just sow in spots or rows as i pull throughout the summer. I tend to cover with basic grain sorghum (Milo) from the local feed store.50lbs for under $20. due to its low growth habit its easy to mow with your typical everyday home mower. every few weeks just to promote deeper root systems and regrowth, thinning the stand slightly after each cutting. Been really great at suppressing nutsedge and pushing back bermuda due to its allelopathic compounds. Although some preparation is still needed to extinguish before fall planning. it's far less work then the alternative. I simply chop with mower or weed eat and cover with a tarp for 6 to 8 weeks. I've also gotten away with 4 weeks if I scuffle or wheelhoe after pulling the tarp for fall planning. And or uncovering for a few days letting the sun burn up the dying foliage and recovering for 3 or so weeks to finish it off. All in all weeds are becoming far less of an issue and the soil is reaping huge benefits from the root biomass and chop and drop
@ScottHead Жыл бұрын
The allelopathic properties dissipate completely? Sounds interesting.
@JunkyardGardener Жыл бұрын
@@ScottHead the compounds do dissipate. The effects are only while "green". And the allelopathic properties are only effective on a select few weeds/grasses. Suppressing seed germination/emergence. A side bonus with the sorghum/Milo is the sugars added to soil through deep root exudates. Up to 6ft .it's also worth mentioning a great companion if planting the sorghum less crowded leaving ample space would be cow peas. The sorghum grows similar to corn and works as a great climbing pole
@JunkyardGardener Жыл бұрын
@@ScottHead Sorghum Sudan is the best option for biomass BUT in your case grain sorghum/milo is much easier to manage/cut. The sorghum Sudan is doable If frequently mowed before getting to tall for light equipment
@JunkyardGardener Жыл бұрын
@@ScottHeadafter giving you some second thought on your scale you can definitely pull off growing sorghum-sudan thick and letting it grow to its full potential and just cutting it at the base with a machete.. it's definitely a good option sowing and forgetting. A good place holder

Thanks for all the grape guidance! This is my third year with one muscadine and one concord. Make jam instead of jelly. It's easier and so tasty. Mine in Virginia aren't ripe yet, but the yield is looking good. I was pleased this year to get some fabulous blackberries. As long as I beat the birds each morning, I'm getting a handful to a half pint every morning. It's petering out now, but they were so tasty. Birds got virtually all of my young blueberry plant yield. Fall squash worked well for me last year. Earlier in the season there were too many borers. This is looking to be a good pepper, cherry tomato, and eggplant year too. I'm growing ginger, lots of herbs and a ton of sunflowers. It's definitely a great (but brutally hot) season!

Missed this video. My zucchini was attacked by bugs. Waited a couple weeks then I started a new batch. They were beautiful. Again the bugs showed up. This time I took bucket of soapy water. Watered the base of the plant. The bugs were headed for higher limbs. I put dozens in the water. I did this every day for about a week. I was getting fruit. I waited for the right size. The day of picking I went to pick. Someone stole it. The nights are cooler and the sqash plants are beautiful. Harvested one zucchini.
