Thursday July 7, 2016 Daniel went to his second day of summer school, and unfortunately I discovered that there was nothing prepared for his learning accommodations. The nurse was basically sitting there while the other higher functioning special needs children were doing writing prompts and playing trivia games and no one was "teaching" Daniel. Our nurses are not teaching aides. They are there with him, because of his medical care, continuous g tube feeds, etc. When I arrived to pick him up, I also learned that the head teacher of the summer school had not engaged with Daniel at all. I introduced myself to him, but he quickly went back to working with the other children and their aides etc. Daniel did have OT present, and she was trying to see what she could put together (which should have been done PRIOR to summer school starting)... and it really isn't her job. It isn't the nurses job. And the school system wont give Daniel a teaching assistant, or Para as they are called. So John and I decided to pull him out of summer school, where he clearly would be BORED watching everyone work and learn. We are addressing it with the school system, but he is not going back there. I was really really upset.
Welcome to our journey with Polymicrogyria (a rare brain deformity that our son Daniel was born with) , please subscribe to join our family and walk through life with us. Every day is a new step in the journey, find joy in the journey! Daniel has extensive medical problems and disabilities, but we have created a loving support structure for him, and the 5 of us, and our pets, find lots of joy and love. A very unique family dynamic for sure! ...... Julie Hasselberger

As a college student studying to be a teacher and someone who herself has Cerebral Palsy this hits close to home and is also unacceptable for Daniel to be treated this way. I remember being younger and my mom going neck and neck to get my teachers to teach me on grade level and realize I could survive and thrive in the regular classroom and after a very long time and advocates I was finally given that chance. Don't give up, Momma! As a future teacher, this is unacceptable. You are absolutely correct that Daniel deserves schooling and education just like anyone else. As teachers we are held responsible that all of our students reach certain learning standards and if that involves finding ways to modify and meet other needs of the child to learn then it has to be done. Children with special needs are just as capable of learning as others and they deserve the same treatment and opportunity as everyone else.

I know that feeling hon... Sometimes things like this make those who are disabled feel unwanted... I went to Summer School to work on my math... I was in a class with all able bodied students.. When my mom went to leave me.. I cried... The teacher did nothing but the class stepped up and helped me feel better... It is so sad that kids with needs are often made to feel like outsiders.... Thank goodness for those kids that helped me through my time at summer school...

Sounds like your nurse is AMAZING! Thank you for sharing the difference between Daniel's understanding of "celebrity" and "lunch". It's so important to share the differences in understanding for our children with special needs. That's horrible that the head teacher hasn't interacted with Daniel. :( My daughter's teacher last school year in a mainstream class. was a bit awkward with parents but great with kids, and that's all that matters for her. My heart feels for you that you feel like your son is being treated as an after thought. Hugs to you mama! xo

Poor Daniel. Hopefully you can get everything set up for the fall. My little man's teacher has been moved to a new school for the fall. Thankfully, one of his EAs is staying (he's in an Autism-specific class) so he'll have one piece of continuity. I'll storm the school in late August for Sept start date.

As a special educator and also a guardian for a young woman living with autism and intellectual disabilities , I am so glad that you and your husband are strong advocates for Daniel. You , of course, know that Daniel is protected by federal laws and the school district is legally responsible for modifying and accomodating for Daniel and absolutely all of his work should be whatever the general ed curriculum is with the modifications and accomodations necessary to make it relevant to Daniel.

Julie Daniel is a boy who deserves like any other boy or girl to have summer school activities set up for him!!!! I understand how you can feel upset because he is a piece of your heart and you love him so much and want him to have everything that he deserves !!! He s worthy ! You will voice that so Daniel can have what he should have! No you should not have to struggle to have all this for him and it's just not right but we live in a world that's not right I believe but please stay strong and know that there is love that surrounds you , family and friends , sending you hugs Julie 💞🙏🏼❤️

Thank goodness you have Judy to tell you what was going on. You and your family are in my prayers. The teacher should have reached out to Daniel to make him feel a part of the class. I have cried more than once how my kids were treated in special Ed by teachers and aides.

Thank you for sharing all of this with us and the world. I have worked in the field and not everyone has people to stand up for the kid like you and your nurses have. I wonder if the teacher was told that he didn't have to "deal" with Daniel because he comes with the nurse? I totally get it when you say "everything is a fight". That's how our life goes too.

I read what happened Julie. And that is such a loss for Daniel and you!!!! Such a waste of time as well. I have a disability as well and I hate it when they "say" that we will do this and that and nothing you say is true. Poor Daniel that he was bored during that time. You walk in to these situations thinking it'll be fine and everything will be fine and dandy but you run into problems. And Judy can't go to the bathroom that's freaking stupid and not right!!!! Keep talking to all your great fiends that will help you. Anyway this summer school sounds horrible and a waste of time. Ps love you vlogs I look forward to your videos everyday. And you husband is so funny I love when he is silly in the videos he makes me laugh

I'm so sorry about what's been happening to Daniel at summer school no one should be treated that way and I believe they should have made special activities for him such as simple crafts were he would be assisted by a teacher. Daniel is very smart and enjoys activities just like everyone else. This video made me very sad and I really think you should try to get someone to check out this school situation. If they just leave him there with only a nurse and no social contact for hours that's considered abuse in my opinion. I will be praying for the best for your family.

I'm so sorry you had that experience! Its a good thing he had a nurse with him. I would want an answer from the teacher. There is no excuse for him not talking with or engaging with Daniel like that. I don't blame you for being upset and defensive. That's your child and we all get defensive over our kids. I hope you guys have a great summer and Daniel will enjoy being at home with you and you wont have to worry about that now. God Bless. Hi Henry!

Daniel defiantly needs a TEACHER to work with him. Para's or nurses do not have the degree to work with kids that is why the teacher goes to college to learn how to teach students with disabilities. Daniel's IEP needs to have a transition plan for what is next after school.

Julie could you sit down with the Director of the Camp with a copy of Daniel's IEP and tell him/her about the IEP Goals and that Daniel needs an appropriate placement with trained staff. Have you thought of looking at an Easter Seals Camp. Here in California we have a camp where people of all abilities of individuals with special-needs go and they swim, do activities based on their level for a few days. I can't believe they cannot make any accommodation and do fun things with Daniel. My heart aches to know that they can't work with you. Again if you need the Superintendent, Director of Special Educaiton go with you to the Extended School Year program to work on the IEP for the summer perhaps that is the way to go. Daniel is entitled to respite hours am I right? Let me know if I can help you with this. I am crying too knowing you are frustrated.

when I was in Special ed classes I had different types of needs. I had to have specialist come all the way to where I lived at in southern California the specialist would drive from San burnadino, which was over 1 hour way they and they'd come to my house and they'd work with me doing excersize that would help to strengthen my muscles and joints and it was through play because I was born with Hypotonia which is Weakness of my muscles and joints through out my whole body. It made me Floppy and limp and my mom was in the house with me and the specialist they'd show her things that would help me strengthen my muscles and joints. it was very good. I'm sorry that the school did that to Daniel. you need to keep fighting for Daniels rights. my mom has had to go to my local School District and talk to the head of the Special needs and climb the Corporate ladder if you have to. it's OK to get upset. Julie my mom has been there fighting for our her kids and all of our unique special needs and mental health places. Maybe the teacher doesn't know and understand Daniels needs. Believe me special needs teacher's and Dr's and even therapists some time's even need to be educated on a Child's / adult's different Types of conditions they may need it explained to them we've had to do that. with My Type of disability. you think people who work with people who have special needs would know more about disabilities. I have a Permanent Brain Damage due to my Natural mom drinking alcohol when she was pregnant with me. and because of that I now have "Fetal Alcohol Syndrome". I still help educate everyday people who work with people like me. on What Is F.A.S. ? because they don't know. was adopted just after i turned 2 years old. I tell you it drives my mom and i crazy. that these types of people who should know. don't know. We constantly think and wonder "Why dont you know what it is. ?" You know what i mean Julie. I understand exactly what that's like. I'm sorry your going through it. it's frustrating. and I'm sorry. my Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. / F.A.S. for Short. is the only type of disability that's 100% preventable

What an irresponsible Director who is ignoring Daniel . He could be reported as part of his job is to work with all abilities. If I were the Director of this program I would have integrated Daniel with Music Therapy, Movies, work on the skills per his IEP etc. I would send home a daily log and you could write in the log your concerns and I would collaborate with the nurses etc. I am afraid you need to go to this young man's superior with regards to your concerns. Probably the kids at this program have High Functioning Autism,ADD/ADHD. Daniel is very smart and if I were living close to you I would do anything to help you with advice as I understand multiple facets of how to navigate the Special Education System. If you need anything please feel free to reach out to me(:. I am sure Daniel can feel when he is left out or ignored.
