Summer trolling the easy way! (catch & clean)

Ahoy legends! This week Shauno and I get stuck into some summer trolling, the easy way! Thats right a good old fashioned hard-bodied diver tow session for mackerel, wahoo, yellowfin tuna and whatever else happens to come our way! Hot tip, we hook up less than 3 minutes into the trip!!

Love the video, you guys crushed it on the table fare. Tip from out here in Southern California on how we look after our catch, we keep our killbags full of ice in the plastic bags and as soon as the first fish goes in we open up the bags and add a few cups of rocksalt as well as a bucket of seawater. This instantly drops the temperature in the bag and lowers the freezing point of the water. All fish we keep also get the royal treatment of a kill spike between the eyes and a knife around the gill rakes. One huge thing we've learned with tuna is that they are very "hot" after being caught and if they go straight into the ice after being caught they will melt a ton of it before they actually start cooling down, so instead for tuna over 20lbs (about 9kg) we soak a few towles in the icewater and lay them over the fish for about 5 minutes. We learned this all from our friends in the commercial bluefin tuna fishery, they also have recommended gutting any tuna over 25lbs before going into the ice bath for the absolute best quality. Great stuff lads, those are some fun and tasty species right there! The Goldy has been fishing quite well so far this Summer. I've found the Macks have been loving lures coloured like yakkas and the Watson's leaping bonito, so it was cool to see your choice of hardbodies was similar to what I've been using. Sammy we have been slaying Spanish over this last month off of Yeppoon we bagged out before Christmas on Spanish all over 115 and then we went out Friday last week and got two 120-130 Spanish and then this morning we got 4 and the biggest was 125 and smallest around that meter mark and all we do is float a unweighted pilly out the back while vertical jigging and bottom bashing

Good afternoon Legend , Regarding the little tunas you caught. I came across a video of a longliner , catching tuna , marlin, swords etc…. When doing the “royal treatment” on the tuna , they are brain spiked , obviously, and when if comes to bleeding, they are making an incision right behind the lateral fins. Instant results ! The fishes are dealt with accordingly , but the removal of the guts , gills , etc , is not what the crew is counting on when it comes to bleeding the fish properly. I thought I’d mention to you , as , I would be interested to know what you think and……if you were to try , what would you be your thoughts on it. As ever , thank you for the adventures. Sammy. You don't always need to troll fast for fish. I once caught a 22kg wahoo whilst using my auxiliary motor to get back to shore on my old boat due to motor issues.

Poke bowls Fer days. We call the stripe tuna Aku in Hawaii. Red meat more flavor than yellowfin and makes very good cut bait. Also very good eating but doesn't last as long as yellowing. Some people don't like it.
