I have been watching your videos for a very long time and I think this one is THE BEST! I enjoy the way you provide useful information without being pushy about your methods. For the first time ever, my tomato plants are being overrun with aphids. I have done all the organic tricks I can, but they are dying off. So sad.

Thanks so much George. Sorry to hear about your tomatoes. You could try blasting them off with a jet of water - just enough to dislodge the aphids without snapping the tomato plants. Hope they recover anyhow.

A possible solution to The Mystery of the Purple Tomato Leaves: at 5500' above sea level in northwestern New Mexico, we have some native cacti that have to make it through our winters (sometimes down to 0 Fahrenheit, -18 C). In fall they develop a lot of sugars in their stems and pads, which acts as an antifreeze--it also gives them a purple tinge. (They also droop as they reduce the water content in their cells to allow expansion during freezing). I realize that you weren't down to freezing there for your tomatoes, but I wonder if the same factor may be in play, causing their leaves to turn purple, too. I'd love to see a link to the layout for your garden in the Garden Planner! You showed a brief glimpse of it in the video (I have had it for years, love it, it makes January tolerable!) but it would be nice to see the actual plan for the garden that we "visit" so often! Love your "MuttCam!"

Being willing to change I think is essential. I started my greenhouse with raised beds and determined that they just weren't working for me... so I've taken them down and I'm growing directly in the ground where I can (half the ground is actually concrete... I built it over the top of a portion of our backyard that had garden and paved type areas). I think it's working much better now and probably let's more light in (as there aren't raised beds blocking some of the sun). I'm also now tackling the back yard after we gave our old trampoline to new neighbours which has freed a nice bit of space to have some flowers and maybe squeeze in some more fruit trees. I'm really looking forward to Spring to see just what I've managed to keep alive ;)

Hi Ben, try using scaffolding netting on your brassica's. The butterfly netting is not protection from the cabbage whites, they pop straight through the holes 🙃

Enjoyable video! I love garden tours. I wish my Swiss chard was doing as well as yours; mine seems to have no interest in growing higher than five inches. Fava beans are an impossibility here because of fungus. However my CABBAGES do great! I can't imagine going without brassicas. Do give netting a try; it works!

Haha - yes Rosie's a pro! I have fewer beds than you - so it sounds like you've got your hands full. But what a joy to have all that growing space. Do give up a bit of the lawn if you can. I established mine by mostly just letting it grow longer! The wild flowers soon came, though I planted a few of the knapweeds.

This is very helpful for me, now that I'm planning on what plants go in my raise beds. You gave me an idea to plant more chard. They are great in the summer when the brassicas don't do well because of the hungry caterpillars. Maybe you want to try red veined sorrel. It's perennial, good for salads, smoothies, soups and looks ornamental but edible. Thank you for showing your garden with us! I enjoyed it! ❤️🙏

I love your happy enthusiastic way you present your videos. I had to smile with your experience of discovering carrots which hadn't grown and suddenly came up. I had a similar experience but with cherry tomatoes. I emptied all the earth in the large pots and containers, that had the cherry tomatoes last year, into my earth mixing container where I add compost earth and maybe a bag of bought earth. well in spring I filled up all my flower pots that needed topping up, also used that earth for transplanting seedlings. oh my goodness, I had tomatoes seedlings growing literally everywhere! (even now in June!). This was due to me just picking the split cherry tomatoes or unripe tomatoes last year and dropping it into the container at the end of the season. I was giving tomatoes seedlings to all my neighbours and friends as I hate to 'kill' anything that still has a bit of life in it! well, we live and learn!!

I’ve got a great recipe for pineapple rhubarb jam. I tweak it so I use honey instead of sugar. Really tart n tangy. Great video. I’m trying to get my very small backyard to come into a wild/flowering area.

Fun garden tour! Lil doggo was happy to keep her dad company. It's started to rain heavy here so I've come inside for a bit, we get wild thunder storms! Doing up a bunch of 7 gallon growbags using all my 'backup' seedlings, 14 done and 6 more to fill! The bags are a rainbow of different colours so it's really quite a pretty container garden. Even with canning, dehydrating and vacuum sealed freezing we'll have extra produce. The food bank should be accepting fresh produce this summer....I hope. I will have 4 million tomatillos and we can only eat so much salsa!

Yes us gardeners that grow in small spaces learn to grow alot in small spaces. You should look at Mlgardener. He's a massive KZbin you've probs seen him but he known for his high intensity planting even with a large amount of land and what he says is all true. Space of course is crucial so your plants aren't physically ramming into each other but sometimes the space they say at the back of the packet between crops is way to much and they say it's due to the roots competing for nutrients so Mlgardener fixed that issue by making his soil more nutrients dense and he literally grew radishes almost touching perfectly shaped and juicy

The tomatoes would have gone purple because of anthocyanin production, plants struggle to metabolise sunlight using chlorophyll below 4 degrees celsius. Amazing channel Ben, thank you so much for all your effort. 😊

I was surprised to see that you didn't have anything under the pole beans. I was quite happy to see you putting parsley under the teepee of French beans. I do leaf lettuce and carrots under my long viners. I also use rounded arches instead of a-frames. I had the garden planner subscription for a few years and it was great for figuring out what I could plant where and when. I would probably still be trying to figure out succession crops without the planner and Mother Earth News. Love your wildlife area. I try to do that also. I pasture raise turkeys, chickens and geese.....and do not recommend trying to garden with them.....but the perennials seem to hold up well to the birds.

Mine from last year wintered over and bolted in May; just waiting for the seeds to dry and age a little more, and I'll be able to harvest a lifetime supply off of one rainbow Chard plant. I'm enjoying your book, by the way. Used your idea with a plant wall; pots, coat hangers, and an old wooden pallet did the trick.

Great video, Thankyou. I’ve got a lot of chard in as it’s so versatile and is harvestable in the hungry gap. I’ve just moved from Hampshire up to Staffordshire (end of March) so it was a but of a rush getting crops in in time. I want to be more organised next year so your videos are more than helpful for thinking about how to shape and plant the plot. I’m also going for a wildlife garden. We have an amazing wildlife pond in the ‘flower and lawn’ part of the garden but at the end is the ‘wild allotment area’. This area has plum and apple trees, our three hens, the veggie plots, the greenhouse and a wild area. I’ve let the nettles and cow parsley grow high and have also sowed some native wildflowers. I’ve seen so much wonderful, beneficial wild life which really makes me very happy 😃
