August 1, 2024 marks the end of my no-buy year. I've been working two jobs for several years, plus I've had part-time jobs on the side, and I had credit card debt, 0 savings... So I decided not to buy clothes, jewelry, hair and face care products, books, stationery for a month. I spent all my money on these things, and I didn't even use a third of them, I didn't read books, and I had 70 hair care products - how long does it take to use them up?)) In short, I liked my no-buy month, so I extended it to a no-buy year. During this time, I paid off my debt, saved some money, donated a lot of clothes, books, and other things, and used a lot of the cosmetics I already had. There were times when I couldn't resist buying something, but in fact, for a whole year it was very little - I bought 4 books, a handbag, and about 2-3 pieces of clothes in a second-hand store. Now waiting to start my second no-buy year)))

I’m still working thru my shampoo & conditioner & all of my hand soaps & bathing soap ~ for me (both liquid & bar). I got all of the shampoo & conditioner when my son was 3 or 4 (he’s now 10) when Beauty Brands went out of business here in Oklahoma, so we’re talking BIG LITERS of each. I think I spent around $500 or so & most were 70%-90% off!!! & yes, I’m STILL going through it all. Granted I only wash my hair 2-3 times a week but that’s because it’s just healthier not to over wash it but still… 😂 Once you get your stuff all together organized & realize what you REALLY HAVE & HOW MUCH OF IT 😂 then you have to figure out what to do with it. & I’m too cheap to give the stuff I will actually go through away.

And to answer your "did I fail?" Question I provide this quote I saw today! "If you attempt anything meaningful in your life, you will fail, guaranteed. The question is, will you quit?" Success is not the absence of failure or mistakes. Failure is PART OF reaching for success. Have a great day!

I like this a lot! I was thinking the other day about how marketing is so similar to an abusive relationship, where someone else is trying SO hard to manipulate you into giving up something you have (money). I agree with what you said at the 4 minute mark - there's nothing wrong at all with buying new things as long as YOU are the one making the decision consciously, and you're not being manipulated or lulled into making a decision without thinking.

I consider your minimal spending summer a complete success! It’s amazing what can happen once it’s realized that shopping and buying has become a habit that needs to be curtailed. My daughter has been on this journey for over a year now and is getting her finances in order. She’s in a much better financial situation than she was last year when she had more debt than money. It’s hard to stop paying attention to what influencers hawk on their channels. I’ve learned to ignore most of the hauls, etc because I can’t wear most of what they are showing due to severe skin allergies. But, every once in awhile, I’ll see something that gives me the ‘I Wants’. It’s hard not to rush to buy it.

And on cue, the Ulta & Temu ads play 😂😂😂. I really enjoyed this content. Yes, you succeeded. For one, the goal was not deprivation. Two, you gained wisdom and introspection even in the "oops" realizations. Additionally, sharing the oops heightens your accountability moving forward. truly appreciate your methodical approach instead of just saying, "I on a no buy" in general and without a measurable plan of action. Thank you for sharing jewels that I will certainly apply, such as the unfollowing/unsubscribing from traps & triggers in the forms of hauls, under 40, and other advertisements. I can always depend on you for practicality 💯💪🏾🤓

No I definitely feel this. I'm definitely getting more intentional about what I buy. "Will I actually use or wear this? Do I actually like this or is it just because it's cheap or on sale? Can I plan out a new outfit immediately with this item?" If I hesitate or can't answer these questions, then I won't get it.

yes everything is a subscription nowadays. I was looking at that 8 sleep thing that all the influencers are talking about and it is an subscription service too. This summer I was saving for college, and I noticed I was too tempted to rationalize things like "oh it's for a birthday gift" "oh I've always wanted this" "oh" "oh" until I saw how those all added upp and how nice that would be in my savings instead, and finally went "oh..." I allotted myself $75 for the whole summer, let everyone know, and included every discretionary expense for it. Even if I wanted to go a free event, so long as it wasn't mandatory like work or school, I included the cost of parking and took it from my $75. Any food I ate out, any snacks I bought, all of that was taken from discretionary spending. I literally became the "we have food at home" parent but to myself ❤ I couldn't justify large purchases with $75 for the whole summer. To me, $15 became a HUGE purchase, and I really thought about what I was doing😮😮 An easy dinner or meal I would've eaten became waiting to eat at home. It was honestly such a slay for me, and I basically hit 5k in savings (again, if I had controlled spending sooner it could've easily been 6k imo, which is massive difference when you make a low wage). Anyways, totally agree with the sentiment of this video!! I'm actually investing in retirement now at 18 like I always wanted, I have a savings fund, and I looked forward to self auditing and taking care of my life.
