I’m a new boat owner and I just bought what I see is the same engine and drive you have, it’s a year 2000 built in 1999 and she looks fabulous, this Saturday I’m putting her on the water for a first time after the purchase test and this time will be all on my own, I have a lot to learn but I’m excited and I’m glad I found your channel, I’m sure I’ll get pretty good tips in it from you. I thank you for that and I’ll let you know how it went and I will have questions for you as well. Thanks a lot

Nice video, thanks for taking the time to post - not a criticism but a simple observation from a mechanical sympathy point of view that will help preserve your engine... Avoid starting your engine on full throttle as shown in the video. The majority of engine oil is a)due to gravity, drained from the head and block and sitting in the sump - it takes a few seconds to get pumped around! b)oil is cold and not at operating temp c) metal parts are also cold & tight and seals likewise - engines and gearboxes are designed to run at operating temp so treat with care when cold. Start your boat (or any cold motor) with care, minimum revs - once this motor got juice we can see it idled without any need for aggressive revving. It is unnecessary and will cause premature internal wear and damage. Also at low rpm it gives you a chance to listen out to confirm pulleys, belts, bearings etc are moving easily and you can shut it off if something does not sound right with potentially a lot less damage than instantly screaming your cold motor to high revs on first turn. Enjoy your boats all!

1. Grease the prop shaft 2. Always pump the throttle a few times when starting a tks carb engine for the first time, be it a first start of the year, or first start of the week.
@NickBealMaine2 жыл бұрын
Will pumping the throttle just make it start easier or are you causing damage if you don’t pump it?
@andreireal91582 жыл бұрын
@@NickBealMaine will start easier, as when you pump throttle - the accelerator pump in the carb pumps gas to make rich mixture for easy cold start. Otherwise you would wait for the pump on the down side of the engine to do its work while the starter is slowly rotating the crankshaft and up the fuel to the carb. Which could take a lot of time and effort and ultimately damage the starter or battery. Cold start throttle pumping is actually mentioned in mercruiser manual.

Thanks, Your boat looks to be in very nice condition. Stored for 8 months??!! Talk about a short boating season.

That cold start at full throttle 😳. Geezus dude just pump the throttle a few times and leave throttle just a little but up. No need to have it on full throttle for it to start. That will definitely harm your engine.
@wyattsdad85612 жыл бұрын
Always pull the throttle back to right before it clicks into neutral. Don’t leave it at wide open throttle on any type of start.

Petro - tks for that video. I am owning a `93 Bayliner with that 3 ltr engine. (just bought) . So - this vid is just good for my "oldie". By the way: did you got this pocket knife for Christmas?? Otherwise you would not come to that funny idea to fix the boat only with that tool :-) Regards from Germany Jörg

Lol " using only my pocket knife." Precedes to pull his boat out with his truck. 😉

Did you leave the anti-freeze sitting in the engine over the winter? You might want to try running your engine in the fall to operating temp so your Tstat opens and then just run 5 gallons of antifreeze through the motor. Pull the drain plugs and leave them removed. Any residual antifreeze wont cause any problems I would worry if my motor was full and there parts of the colling system where the antifreeze didn't get to and water froze.

have you ever changed the throttle and shift cables ?
@adamriale90652 жыл бұрын
Supposed to change gear and motor oil prior to winterizing. Worst thing you can do is leave contaminated oil in you engine over the winter.
@rod444rod2 жыл бұрын
Motor oil? If you're planning on changing it, sure, do it in fall but there's no need to change engine oil just because its going into storage. Its not going to do any harm just sitting in the oil pan.
@adamriale90652 жыл бұрын
@@rod444rod gonna have to agree to disagree. Worked for multiple boat yards and dealerships. Also worked on cars. If anything motorized goes into storage was always trained changing oil is part of the pickling process

I have a question for you. I have the same boat, but it's a two thousand and for my blower is not working What wires control the blower?

Thank you for the starter guide as well - yes I am new boat owner! When I push the throttle only button I cant move the handle? Do I need to push the gear button on the handle simutaoenously?

It seems to me that boat owners in general have more money than they know what to do with, and little to no mechanical or specific engine knowledge. You don't just replace parts because they have some surface rust and it's "only $25". How do electrical connections become undone like that, that baffles me. Was there a nut holding that loop on? You don't even seem to address that. It's like the blind leading the blind over here.
