@@NS-pf7jr We do in fact have different words for snails and slugs. There's a common misconception that the word "snigel" means snail. The correct name for snail is actually "snäcka" whilst "snigel" instead refers to slugs.

@@kubanfoodinc.cogaming_hd7397 You're right, didn't think of that one! But for me, snäcka is more of a thing you find living in water and not in the garden.

Hello all! Experienced orchid grower here. Just a couple tips for you all. When fertilizing make sure your orchids are watered and saturated first maybe after a heavy rain or after soaking them in a container, then spray your nutrient solution on the roots. This is more efficient and orchids absorb nutrients easily. Orchids prefer slightly acidic water too so if you could treat your water that’d be great. If you’re using water soluble nutrients cut the recommended dose into a quarter and whenever you water use the diluted nutrient solution. Remember to do a weekly flush because salt buildup will burn root tips. Happy growing everyone!
@cello977
@cello977 4 жыл бұрын
well i am agree and not. its okay to water orchid with fertilized water without soaking frist, but soaking orchid frist then use fertilized water can help reduce the chance of over fertilizing, but its a slight difference. but both of thoose method still work good, the root still be able to absorb nutrient easily even if its not soaked frist.
@chandlerlee3516

huang cello orchid roots absorb nutrients more efficiently when the roots are saturated. Thus saving fertilizer and reducing chemical runoff.

huang cello indeed that’s why a large flush of fresh water is required to wash away the salt build up.

Chandler Lee. But, if you water the orchid first, won't the orchid be able to only absorb so much liquid and once it absorbs the water, it can't also absorb nutrients on top of that? Orchids can only absorb a certain amount of liquid and once they do, they stop absorbing. I never water first because I want my orchids to take in all the fertilizer they need and my orchids are very healthy, strong and happy.

Really interesting video. The lower night-time temperature is definitely something I’m waking up to - and not just for orchids. I’m binging on all these greenhouse tours - what a treat! I hope there is a species tour of the orchid greenhouse too - I get the impression Summer Rayne is much more interested in foliage plants than orchids, but there are many with fantastic foliage (phalaenopsis schilleriana, Paphiopedilum maudiae etc). And when in bloom, unusual orchids are such a talking point for visitors. I have collected a lot of species orchids, and many of them thrive and rebloom in a home, it’d be great to see some of these highlighted, so people can see there is so much more to orchids than just the hybridised phalaenopsis that are seen everywhere.

Orchids in general are incredibly tough plants. The first orchids came from the tropics to Europe on voyages that took a month or more sometimes, no water, no light. They survived and grew. Watering is the most critical thing. More orchids are killed by overwatering, than by underwatering. That's because the roots need air, as well as water. Even the terrestrial ones. Best way to get one is to buy it from an orchid specialist, rather than a big-box store, or general plant seller. Their plants are likely to be in the best condition for you at the start. Or better yet, from someone who grows them. After a while, you have more than you have room for!

I've found that cotton mop strings are so great for mounting orchids or tying them into the pots. They last surprisingly long and are actually really good at forming a nice microclimate for root growth. I'm in the tropics and all my mounted orchids are tied in place with them.

I agree that nylon tights are a better alternative to fishing line when attaching orchids to mounts. The fabric is soft and stretchy so allows for root growth that isn't strangled. Old nylon tights are also good for making little tea bags to fill with slow release fertiliser.

I've professionally grown orchids for 40+ years now, and have come to really appreciate 'zip ties' (aka 'cable ties', or in Spain, 'bridas') for mounting on bark or branches. Easy to cinch tighter if the mount shrinks, and easy to snip off once the roots have attached themselves well.

This spring/summer, I purchased a tiny orchid mounted on bark which hangs. I have had so much success with it (it is now spiking!), that I have purchased three more mounted orchids, one quite big. They are so interesting, don’t take up too much real estate, and grow so fast. I highly recommend them! Just be prepared to spray their roots every other day.

I love the tips of using a cotton ball to keep slugs from traveling further on a plant....and the nylon stockings used to tie the orchid onto bark. I have one orchid...a typical Phal orchid. I've had it for almost two years. The first blooms died back, but got another flush of blooms later in the year (8 total...now down to 4). I think I'm getting another scape, as I see a little nub popping out where a new leaf formed. I water every 8 days, every other week feed with a weak fertilizer. So far..so good.

Tips I use for mounting my orchids are a bit expensive, but effective. Lowes/home depot, amazon, etc.. sell a variety container of zip ties. Each mounted orchid get one or two, (depending on the size), ties for attaching to a mount. Its clearly my preference. You can get them in several colors. My negative experience with stockings are that they hold moisture for algae and mildew. Happy growing.

Growing up my grandmother always tied her orchids to any stray tree branch with old stockings and they always grew so well, i always thought it was just about recycling though! Over here in the philippines we crush up egg shells and leave them on the coconut coir cubes we use as potting medium. The temperatures get so hot in the peak summer months and we water our orchids every morning when they are grown outside the house. 🙂

Some great tips there. I have used the stocking ties before and it is an excellent tying material for mounts but in the garden also. One other good material is Shirring Elastic used in dressmaking. It comes in a variety of colours with black and green being my favourites. It will decompose faster than nylon and is easier to remove. It will last plenty long enough for orchid roots to get a hold.

@@ronminerosenberg Actually there really isn't soil. I had goldfish in my 10-gallon aquarium before I put the African violet and orchids in there and just kept the pebbles that were in there with the fish. I also feed these plants water from my 29-gallon aquarium every time I change the water in it which is probably every 10 days. Any soil around the African violet is what was in the pot and what is around the orchid is just some wood clippings or whatever was in that pot when I moved it to the aquarium.

Dear Summer Rayne, you tipped down the most intelligent plant species in the World... but does not do any respect to them ore really help people out. If you want to move on with this theme: there are 3 categories : Cold, Warm and In-between. In these categories you have them with water restoring bulbs, and with no water restoring. In these categories you have them with long-life Leave’s ore leaves for only one year.... but most exciting is that Orchids are the best mimicking plants of animal-live in shape, vorm, group, color, smell and place’s were they grow, just to get poll-unite and make as-soon-as-possible better seeds for the next generation to come.
