I watch Miss Orchid Girl. Her channel is extremely informative. Plus she has a very kind personality. And she never makes you feel that you don't have any business growing orchids. I've been to a few channels where they make you feel foolish for asking particular questions. With orchids, no question is a dumb question. Orchids are some of the most beautiful plants around. I received an orchid when my brother passed away. It helped launch my curiosity and hobby. I ended up branching out into other types of plants as well. Growing plants has been a way for me to deal with the loss of my brother. It was very difficult for me due to the nature of his passing. Plants are truly a form of therapy. They help mend the soul and keep your heart content. ❤️

I really like how a lot of growers in this series talk about how they have killed plants. So many people get discouraged when a plant dies in their care. Its par for the course, so keep going! :)

Miss Rayne, my mum is an orchid hoarder. She has grown all the orchids on our little garden from the seeds by herself since i was kid. This episode is the most thoughtful present for her 61 years old birthday. Thank you so much !

One of my family members got a hers to bloom all summer. So beautiful! She doesn't really know anything about plants, just gives them a shot glass of water once in a while. It is in a nort-east facing window, and we are lucky to have very high humidity in our country (depending on weather, 60-100%)

Great information Summer! The first gentleman is right about getting the right orchid for your space or culture. I live in Arizona and only have one Dendrobium that spritz daily to try and maintain the humidity. The struggle is real! 👍

It seems people mostly focus on tropical orchids in the US. Hardy orchid species under Cymbidium (such as Cymbidium goeringii) are pretty much neglected even though they have been highly valued as house plants in Asia for hundreds of years. I wish to see more introduction to those.

I loved the info about the coarseness of the growing medium in the greenhouse as opposed to what you should offer orchid in the home.

I've been living in Oyster Bay for more than 10 years and I have never visited the Planting Arboretum. This past year I really got into plants (went from owning 4 to more than 70) but I've always struggled with orchids. I think they are beautiful and I appreciate the advice given in this video. The one orchid that survived my TLC is the one that I "neglected" the most, so it seems I inadvertently gave it what it needed. I will definitely keep the cactus analogy in mind. Also, I put this year's Orchid Festival on my calendar.

Well, you should visit Kerala or North eastern states in India. We have the best habitat to grow orchids. No need of greenhouses or glass chamber to control environment. Just some shade from sun and from rain. It’s tropic and green here. I am so in love of my phals and Dens..

So now I understand why my monster phalenopsis is thriving - I neglect it so much :D it has to live mostly on water in the air (fortunately for it, it lives in my west facing kitchen) :)

Hi greetings from Brazil Here some people also use ice on Orchids to cool the media and the plant's roots because some orchids need a temperature break to bloom, especially if they live in a place with hot stable temperature climate.... But you're right it is still wrong and ineffective, people should find the right plant to their environment. Love you're videos

+SummerRayneOakes. Thank you for sharing Summer. I've had a large Phalaenopsis orchid since Valentine's Day. Since then it's gone through root/crown rot and leaf limping lol. It's gotten down to 3 leaves and one aerial root. I am not giving up hope on it as I love Orchids and I love what he mentioned about the courseness of the bark, the type of culture/light and the dreaded ice cube tip lol.💖

I have always admired orchids but have never had much luck with them, like some of my houseplants I love (water) them too much. However I found this video very helpful and I feel more confident that I will be able to keep my most current orchid alive ( its a beautiful yellow orchid ( don't remember the species name but it came from the grocery store so its the basic one) alive this time around.

FYI- the ice cube simply slows down the movement of the water through the medium so the moss and bark have a chance to absorb the moisture. The trick is to place it in a location that doesn’t touch the roots or leaves.

Species to me is better since the plant will get to know your home's climate. I have to cater to the orchid's needs while I it adjusts. Hybrids taught me to relax, however. I had 200 plants at one point. I suffered a blight and later on an infestation of fungus gnats. However, the ultimate killer was mice that wiped out the remaining few. I have one left...

Growing orchids really depends in the environment. For example sphagnum moss never worked for me. I had killed multiple ones then tried semi hydroponic where i would get rid of all of the moss and clean the roots. Then would replace the media either clay pebbles, lava rock or pumice where 1/2-1 inch of water sits at the bottom of a clear 5-8 inch tall glass. Full water culture is controversial but i do keep some of my orchids in full water culture also where 20% of the roots are submerged all the time.

I don't completely agree with this gentleman when he state's that Florida is the northern most range for orchid's. I assume he had 'tropical orchid's' in mind when he said this. Temperate climate orchid's which are mostly terrestrial in their growth habitat, are found up to and within both arctic circle's.

Nice, interesting video. =D It's kinda weird for me talking about how much I'm gonna spend with orchids. I took all my orchids from garbage, trash, right on the streets. The ones ppl didn't want anymore. I always say they're adopted. I had only 5, now are only 2, the older died 3 days ago. I'm sort of... desperate, you know.. don't wanna lose them... I have 360 plants, most foliages, trees, roses, cacus, but only 2 orchids, no flowers anymore. If they were ppl, I would say they're sad... hehe

Why would I want to learn from a a guy that murdered 100 orchids?! When I can go to the website of the seller. Pfff, another old person hating the internet. Why modern Socrates? Why are you jealous of a website? Is it narcissism? That you are no longer the sole owner of knowledge? That's just a bit greedy. Edit: Why does every hobbiest have to kill plants to understand them?! 1000?! Poor plants. C'mon, if we said this about dogs it would be outrageous. Plants are living creatures too. It's not ok and it's not fun to kill another living creature. Sure I eat salad and chicken, food everyday, but I have to, I don't do it as a hobby. Just grow hybrids you snobs, stop joking about killing plants.
