The American Film Institute voted this song in their 100 Movie Songs Of All Time. Rightfully so too.

I've been looking for the full movie for years..was there some kind of copyright problem ? I've longed to see it again, since I saw it in 1958 when it came out..it marked me for life..such beautiful.music and excellent actors !

Yes, I believe Gershwin's family weren't happy with the film and refused to release it for further viewing. It is possible to get hold of copies transferred from VHS tapes, but they're really poor quality.

@@mikeharland8640 Thank you so much Mike ! (:)..at last the mystery is elucidated ! I guessed there was some legalistic reason. A shame though as often movies can't always do full justice to a book or an opera, but feel such actors as those in the film version did a beautiful job..Dorothy Dandridge who sadly disappeared so young, Sidney Poitier, and Sammy Davis Jr... such marvelous talented actors !

No need to apologize. It's not your fault the Gershwin heirs have been sitting on this for years so that the one first rate print that still exists can't be seen. It'll become public domain eventually. The movie isn't good enough, but it deserves to be seen.

You can request from the National Library Archives that you want to see it, and they schedule with you an appointment. Thats the only way you can see it.

So sad but the real reason is the owners of the film have been intimidated into believing its racist and needs to be banned. I have seen the entire movie and it is only a deception of real life of poor southern blacks in the 1920's there is no racism. Its like tearing down statuses

Libertarian 1 I would doubt that is the”real reason” currently, although these days that may become true in the near future. The reasons for its obscurity are more likely to be the fact that it was never a box office hit. This Wikipedia entry sheds some light on the overall picture. en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Porgy_and_Bess_(film) History is to learn from, not to obscure.

Is the baby's daddy rich? I think the baby in the song was a white child, am I wrong?
