Il n'y a personne en dehors de Satch qui ait apporté tant de joie musicale à ce jazz, ce véritable jazz qui nous réjouit tant. Merci wild cat

I was 13 years old when I heard a record of Sidney Bechet. This changed a lot for me: I started on 14 with playing sopranosax. Thanks mr Bechet for the inspiration.

WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! From a mad keen 76yo Aussie fan. GOD--Sidney sure could play....
Just WOW! So many people cover this, but Bechet slays it while honoring the melody.

Whether he played in New Orleans, Paris, New York, anywhere, Sidney was the greatest! Never a sax player as distinct. Heard him once in LA, Shrine Auditorium, greatest musical night of my then young 😊 life!

Unbelievable! Bechet met the members of the Braslavsky band just ONE DAY before the festival started, Braslavsky (1930) and René Franc (1929) were just around 20 at that time.

A l'examen de la discographie de Sidney il y a 28 versions de Summertime toutes en concert, à l'exception de l'originale en 1939 pour la compagnie Blue Note.

Very nice version. The funny thing is that the introduction is used by the famous, but sadly late, danish sax player Steen Vig in one of his last performances. I doubt that Steen was in Paris at the time...

bechet's soprano sax had an almost primeval howl, perfectly suited to the gershwin melody.

It's really exciting to follow all the musical way that Sidney Bechet explored playing Summertime, starting with1939's record. In my opinion, 1954's is the most beautiful and powerful instrumental version of Summertime ever recorded: KZbin kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWbMf3evrKtnpJKHidney Bechet with Michel Attenoux and his orchestra, recorded live in Saarbrücken, November1954.

Sidney really waxes rhapsodic in this version. I always wondered if the genesis of this piece was "St James Infirmary" If one hums one piece after each it is clear that they have a very very close chordal progression, and the melody is virtually the same. Anyone know for sure?
