Along this goal to ski all fifty of "The Fifty Classic Ski Descents of North America", there lies a few cruxes. A few lines that stand out as the ultimate test for skiers. Lines that have seen one, maybe two, ski descents in history. One such mountain that is on that list is Mt. St. Elias in Alaska.
Mt. St. Elias is a mythical, foreboding peak that jumps straight out of the ocean, 18,008 feet into the sky. It's renowned for violent storms that come straight off the northern pacific and slam into its icy steeps. It is unknown how many people have ever stood on the summit, but it is known that most people that try, fail.
In May of 2021, Cody Townsend, Dan Corn, Nick Russell and cinematographer Bjarne Salen set out to climb and ski this Alaskan beast. This is the tale of their adventure.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is The FIFTY by Cody Townsend. The FIFTY is a project following Cody Townsend as he attempts to climb and ski all fifty of the lines and mountains chronicled in the book, "The 50 Classic Ski Descents of North America." The series documents Townsend's journey's, travels, challenges and each line and mountain listed in the book. It's a journey through the most majestic mountains and ski lines in North America along with a unique insight into how skiers make decisions in the backcountry, how they plan, navigate and safely move through the mountains along with the people that dedicate their lives to the mountains.

Felt a bit like watching Icarus get too close to the sun. Been super excited by the series. This is the first one that made me feel queasy watching the conditions deteriorate all around you. Would be super interested in a follow up on lessons learned and how decisions were actually made. Seems your senses told you one thing but decisions made ended up being a bit less clear. Could be the edit or reality. Stay safe out there.

@@yannfontana4542 I got the sense that their exit was planned to be by plane on the same location where they were dropped off, but they decided to "ski to the ocean" as a consolation prize for not summiting, and also because maybe there was no way a plane could land and pick them up there. But who knows...would love to hear what Cody was thinking on that.

I’d imagine the weather where they got dropped off was far worse and more dangerous than the weather at the beach, so I’d bet skiing to the ocean was a weather safety decision first and foremost.

It’s great to see honest film making when it comes to these big mountain adventures. Critical decision making, the fact everything isn’t always perfect and that life is more important than any line is the overriding message. I love the fact this series isn’t just “sent it bro”, its about educating people about the real dangers of going into serious backcountry and that its not a joke. Do the training, be humble and know when saying stop is the right decision. Thanks Cody and team!

Yours are some of the best, most honest and humble videos. I need to point out, and you may already know, the RIP in the credits has the wrong name. Reid Sanders, not Simmons. He was a friend of mine. I spent time in the back country with him. Unfortunately his judgement was poor on that day. I watched this 4 times already! so inspiring and intense! I love how you guys won the mental battle of wanting to go up vs turning around and made the right decision to turn around and dodged those avalanches on the way down! Anyone watching should take notes and learn from this. The avalanches are a serious wake up call and I literally just finished the Marc-Andre movie "the alpinist" and it details his amazing accomplishments and tragically ends with him dying in an avalanche. Even the most experienced and expert mountaineers can die in nature at their prime. Being able to read the snow and determine the level of danger of avalanche and weather etc is absolutely critical for anyone attempting anything this serious.

Wow! Just based on the title I have to comment... I’ve been there (summer ‘92 I think), not on St. Elias, but paddling Icy Bay. What a phenomenal area. Paddled for a week, up the fjords, through the pack ice. Loved the area so much, I named my dog Yahtse (a glacier, and the Eyak name for the mountain). Ok, I’ll sign off and watch. Can’t wait for the show! I’m sure it’ll be worth it. Alright, I’m back. And wow again. I didn’t know what to expect, far too close, and nearly buttonholed. But, I was gripped. At times, I had a relaxed grin of enjoyment and reminiscing, then found myself leaning forward with concern. You weren’t camped at one of the exact sites I had been, but the landscape has changed a lot since then, that I know. Fun facts, from what I’ve been told. 1. Yahtse, the name of a glacier, and aboriginal name of the mountain, from what I’ve been told, means “big white” in the Haida tongue. 2. St. Elias is in the tallest coastal range in the world. 3. There is more local relief than anywhere in the world, including the Himalaya. 0 - 18k. 4. Some 100+ years ago, the glaciers extended out to the ocean from what I recall reading. I’m certain the faces are much farther back now than in the ‘90s. 5. In 2015, there was a mega tsunami from a landslide scouring the bay walls over 300 feet, similar to Lituya Bay in the ‘50s. I hope you get another shot at the peak.

Probably the best video yet of this series, I really appreciated that you showed the raw side of (ski)mountaineering and how dangerous it can be. I think sometimes people see videos and movies about people climbing and summiting peaks (not that there is anything wrong with those videos, people like to see people succeeded) and start to get this false sense that mountaineering is "just a harder hike" and that it isn't as dangerous as it really is. As a mountaineer myself (though with much fewer mtns under my belt than you!) I felt the chills from personal experience when you looked back and realized just how close you were to dying, and yet in a weird way that feeling is also something that draws you back to the mtns. Keep up the excellent work, and stay safe-ish!

What an awesome story to document. I think this not only showed the drive and determination you have always shown to acheive, but also the awareness for your environment at the cost of the adventure or summit. Incredible, as always! Here's to the next...

Hey man. I'm a desert dweller who gets his mountain/suffering fix via the mountain bike - been on the snow for just some brief stints while hiking. But damn if I haven't binged the hell out of this project. So incredibly well done. Looking forward to future editions. I appreciate the decision making and terrain evaluation aspects. Keep up the stellar work.

Love your content Cody. Have you thought about doing a colab with Niko Schirmer once? That would be a great mix of personalities on camera.

That would be interesting indeed. Cody trying to minimise the risks with Niko who's pushing the limits and finding himself narrowly escaping death time after time.

Really frank & honest appraisal of ski mountaineering; not always plain sailing, far from it. Great film again

Well, there may not have been much information on St. Elias before.... and now that the information is out... something tells me that there aren't going to be people flocking to climb it :) Good friend of mine (Nancy Hansen) tried to climb elias 3 times, and finally gave up on it. Amazing story, thank you for sharing it Cody... it's even more horrifying than I actually imagined. What a story to tell.

awesome story gentlemen, Bjarne my friend ,i miss you and clearly you remain a humble and savage adventurer. One correction in the credits i would like to point out; Reid Sanders (not Simmons) perished attempting to ski that line several decades ago. keep up the awesome adventures.

There's an extra-special "pit in the stomach" feeling watching an avalanche or rockfall wipe out the line you were in moments before. Nothing quite like it. So glad you were all clear. PS/note to self: Next tent bound epic: deck of cards. Great work on this episode, all around. The mountains always teach and offer memories, even if they're not the ones we think we sign up for!

What a movie and what a story telling.. I love the way you share this experience. A lot of mountaineering movie would take the dramatic approach in the editing and story telling of an adventure like this, but you just show us the raw experience, the emotions the spectactor gets from it are way more real and intense! Well done for all your work guys, this is unreal!
