I've mentioned before - there's so little "turn around" content I come across. This series really illustrates the mental challenge of decision making, how agonizing it is.
@CodyTownsend2 жыл бұрын
I appreciate that and I'm glad we illustrated that aspect to ya. It's not easy to turn around but it's super important to do.
@susanappleby24142 жыл бұрын
Great point. How many people have died on Everest when they knew they should turn around and everyone else knew they should turn around but they just couldn’t do it. The point is to go and come back safely. But most shows just emphasize the summit.
@mtadams20092 жыл бұрын
Royal Robbins said many years ago” don’t hesitate to turn around, the mountains will always be there”. I always remember that and it’s helps me many times to make a good decision. My other one is when in doubt go home.
@stevenqirkle2 жыл бұрын
Agree there’s nothing wrong with a “turn around”. And makes it that much sweeter when we get to see the revenge mission!
@bihlygoat2 жыл бұрын
And they don’t make it an agonizing decision. They look at the positive sides of the experience. Good lessons.
@Rook24242 жыл бұрын
I appreciate you not glamorizing going for it when you shouldnt. It as a major face in the sport it sets a really strong example of what to do in the mountains, and shows that the glory is just coming back from the trip alive cause the mtn will always be there

Thank you for that. Appreciate it a ton.

The mountain might not always be there... and it for sure might not have snow at some point in the near future unfortunately. That being said I do agree the decision making in these episodes is what everyone should strive to achieve in the mountains.
@Steven-ro6os2 жыл бұрын
@@johnathonniedermeyer4051 This mountain, or the snow on it, aren't going away any time soon, despite climate change. It's subarctic there. Definitely will change for the worse, though.

It means so much that you ended this episode with you seeing Mt. Dawson come back out of the clouds, but say 'not today, the mountain told us no'. Not reaching the objective is not failing. Thank you for documenting this whole journey for us through it all, I am beyond stoked for the rest of Season 4.
@CodyTownsend2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it’s an interesting mental battle after turning around. It’s this constant back and forth of “we could’ve” and “we turned around for a reason”. I like to make sure we share that stuff because I find it interesting and it can be useful for others
@warrenmaaskant94372 жыл бұрын
@@CodyTownsend This is a great series in my mind because you balance all the ski touring/mountaineering aspects well - the risk and the stoke. I'm sure on top of it all you are dealing with the added pressure from sponsors and various outside expectations. Well done guys- stay safe and am excited to see more BC interior lines to come!

Great episode because it shows the decision making needed not just to enjoy mountains, but to reduce danger to yourself and others in the mountains. Checking off a line means nothing if you place yourself or your colleagues in serious danger.

Watching Cody’s “mission aborted videos” through the years is a solid reminder of why he’s still alive and able to do this. I don’t think it’s always about being lucky or having great instincts. Sometimes it’s about pure knowledge and understanding of the environment that allows you to be more proactive to the potential dangers in the mountains.

I find it so inspiring to witness the humility and honesty with which you guys approach every single line. The decision making process is incredibly raw. Bjarne did a great job of capturing how big the scale of the terrain was, his cinematography just gets better and better. It's so hard to overcome that choking, arrogant voice in your head that is pushing you into something that could ultimately mean you never ski again and recognise, in the moment, its the mountain that dictates the tempo. Mad respect, can't wait to see you crush it next time.

Presenting the perceived “failures” of not making a line is really what makes this series great, as others have said, “turn around content” is still not valued as “cool” which is completely counterintuitive and dangerous. It is so important that the PROs are showing that they are also humans, make smart choices and evaluate all the elements of deciding whether to green light or not. Coming back alive is the priority, at the end of the day, being here to ski another day is what’s most important. Thank you Cody & all the team at The FIFTY for bringing the community great content, keep it up!
