I love my Mongar 2! Top tip for packing it when hiking though: pack the fly sheet and inner in the main bag and it'll compress right down to the size of a melon, then pack the poles and pegs separately in your bag - fills the holes in your pack better 😁

If you run the top cross pole under the frame instead of over then it lowers the sides and gives you less airflow but a bit more protection.

Used this tent in Iceland on the laugavegur and fimmvörðuháls trails. Performed great! And yes, middle pole goes over. Two reasons:it rests on the pole instead of pulling on the rubber. And it's a bit tighter. The inner tie offs make this tent very sturdy in the wind. Tent is symmetrical, so inner and fly go either way. The loops of the inner can be put under the loops of the mat so you can set it up more quickly

The twist-locking clips are absolutely genius: I have friends who use this tent for winter camping, and the twist-lock clips are one of the main reasons they opted for this model. The most common clips rely on the elasticity of the plastic to clip onto the pole (sort of hooks that can bend open so that the pole can snap in). The problem with that is that polymer elasticity drops dramatically with temperature. At -15 °C, those hooks are VERY brittle, forcing the pole into them can easily snap them. This design, however, does not require the plastic clip to retain its elasticity to function, there's no bending required.

Same one I just got! I missed what you said half way through cos all I could focus on was the clip you missed on the inner tent.

Doesn't that white surface all around you keep you awake when you're trying to sleep at night/morning? I like darker interiors like I like to blackout my room at night when trying to sleep, I think the white amplifies the little light outside that there is. Great for readers I guess, but ppl generally have torches/lamps!

Absolutely love my Star River 2. Very similar but with the asymmetric height ends "inspired by" the Big Agnes Copper Spur as opposed to the symmetric design of the Mongar "inspired by" the MSR hubba hubba. Mine has the clips for the fly corners on both the inner and the ground mat corner tapes. Which means that you can absolutely do fly first or inner first depending on the weather. The Mongar looks like the vestibules are slightly larger which wouldn't be a bad thing. There is also a Mongar in 210T darker green for those looking for a stealthier option. Keep the tent reviews coming !
@SummitOrNothing3 жыл бұрын
Must say I did enjoy the old star River, except mine had snow skirt which really annoyed me during the night. I did find it colder for one person, so I imagine I may have the same issue here having more headroom and far more mesh.
@preciouscode98 Жыл бұрын
Do you still own the Star River? And how good has it held up? I've got one and it's very nice but my groundsheet is way too big and doesn't clip in easily unfortunately. They also say it condensates a lot?
@Dean_Smith Жыл бұрын
@@preciouscode98I do - gets the occasional use and remains a favourite. I now have a Southern Cross 1 for sole use which is obviously a big step up but tiny. I recently bought a WC Panacea 2 - which is very similar to the SR2 but with the poles outside the fly. Although vestibules are bigger its actually narrower in the sleeping area. (noticed by my Daughter in comparison on a recent camp). So for 2 the SR2 feels slightly bigger with a slightly smaller footprint. Footprint matt for mine has always felt a perfect fit and clips easily. - strange. The included footprint always feels such a bargain compared to the overpriced terra-nova/wild country add-ons.

Just got mine today- came with absolutely no instructions so I appreciate you doing this video on how to set up! I got the polyester bcs I hate the colors of the 20D. It’s bigger & heavier than I expected but it’ll do for now and I got it on sale for $99USD. I’m only just getting started in backpacking from day hiking so this is fine for me for now. It seems like a tough little tent that can handle decently strong wind & rain. I look forward to using it this autumn!

There's also two metal rings on the outer fly that hook onto the cross beam. If you open the fly door and look directly up you'll see them, just helps to center the tent relative to the frame. One thing I'll say is that the fly is under a LOT of tension when clipped onto the cross beam. Also, the end of the cross beam has a sharp ish edge to it that is pressed up against the outer fly which looks a bit sketchy. It would be much better to see a fabric pocket that the cross beam can slide into instead.

Think I’ll get the porch extension at some point too. Space and head height is great along with the gear loft, super useful. Looks a great tent, however, just like other Naturehike tents it’s not fly first . Which for me here in the UK a who is a regular all year round spur of the moment wild camper, is not good news because of the unpredictable weather.
@SummitOrNothing2 жыл бұрын
You say that, but I have often put my naturwhike up outer first, it's fly fits to its ground sheet independently so easy does it... heres a video I made about precisely that kzbin.info/www/bejne/g6qvh597a8SWmJI

@@SummitOrNothing Thanks for reply , yes I seen the video before. Me personally it’s too fiddly,time consuming especially in the pouring driving rain. As I found out the hard way with the Naturehike cloud 2 . Those tent were not made for fly first per se. My current tent goes up all in one,and down all in one,quick,simple easy. Yes cost a bit more, but it’s worth it to stay dry,and keep the tent dry. Just my opinion. Though I am always open to new tents,new systems,hence I follow your channel..

I am still undecided between this and the cloud up 2….. I really can’t decide which 🤷♂️ help 🤣

Do like I did, buy both :) They both are absolutely terrific tents. If you threatened to shoot me if I didn't pick one it'd be the Mongar just for the extra room and the two porches. But as Trev says the wind can blow a little under the fly. In summer that's a blessed relief, I used mine in -5C this year and I definitely needed my big boy pants on to keep out the cold! But that isn't what it was designed for.

@@tonyanddeb1012 my wife would kill me if I bought both 🤣 I have to sneak in a tent or two a year a slip it straight into shed before she sees 🤣 luckily I’m the only one with the key so she can’t go in a see the 7 tents already in there 🤦♂️

I'm undecided between this and the Cloud Up 3... mainly because I really like the Mongar 2, but there will often be me + girlfriend + toddler, and I think it'll be a tight squeeze in the Mongar :( (considering the Mongar 2 with the additional large vestibule for me to sleep in!)
@deanwood13383 жыл бұрын
@@saccerzd maybe look at the cloud peak 2. I’ve had myself and my two kids in that 11 and 9. Plus all the gear. It’s a hard choice for sure… but I think I’m leaning towards the UP. But also I believe they do a mongar 3. So even more options to confuse you 🤣 my bad
@brianmorrison91683 жыл бұрын
I've been thinking about getting a new tent and the Mongar does look a good tent. The Cloud Peak is nice too, but a little on the heavy side, if being used by one person only. The Mongar has a few strange 'non stealth' colours, but there's a green and even a decent coloured purple one. I've actually already written to Santa asking for a new tent and / or a sit on kayak ... so I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Regards from Whitley Bay

Let's hope santa plays ball then, Brian. It's a great little tent.

Aren’t these just msr elixir/hubba hubba knock offs?
@SummitOrNothing3 жыл бұрын
If they do the same thing for a fraction of the price.... count me in. Besides, my old cloud up 2 withstood 60mph winds on dartmoor when the brand new msr elixir that I went out with got wrecked.... heres the video kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn_FnWSDYpirodk

This is a knock off of the MSR hubba hubba 2NX. Well made but has some flaws to me. Mesh comes too low to the ground so wind and dust can get in too easy. I don't like the plastic clips that fix the fly to the ground sheet. So...I went for the much more expensive MSR. Great tent. If Narurehike had less mesh I would have chosen it.
@SummitOrNothing3 жыл бұрын
Yea there is a lot of mesh in this one. But I've never had a lot of trouble with any naturehike tents I own so far. In fact my old cloud up 2 took a beating on many camps, then me and friend hot his by 60mph winds, me in the naturehike, he in a more expensive brand new msr tent.. first time out and his didn't make it back. The coud up did. kzbin.info/www/bejne/n2XYh6OOi86MfMU

@@SummitOrNothing don't get me wrong. Value for money's Narurehike is unbeatable. Just 2 things which puts me off buying one. Friend of me got the cloud up 2 and is very happy with it. For what it's worth, 60 mph winds....you won't see me in a tent 😁

Inner sheet, poles, outer sheet, what a faff, thats why i use a Slumit Cub 2, up in 30 seconds and pegged out in 2 mins, bone dry and stable.

Must admit Mike, that does look an intriguing tent, may have to take a closer look at that one
