I just bought my first static 50m line for shooting with my camera from the top! I do not see any backup rope here, but I was planning to back it up with one of the dynamic ropes that most of the time we bring in excess at the crag. Do you think is a good idea to have a backup?

The knot at the top is redundant (double figure 8) hooked on two different anchor points.

Really solid tutorial. I would add that you can get away with shooting between 200 and 250 frames per second, instead of your recommended 400 to 500. I consistently shot tumbling and parkour movement, which is much faster than rock climbing movement aside from a lead fall, and I was able to consistently get crisp shots at those lower frame rates. It really helps because then you don't have to counterbalance the high frame rate with higher ISO

For sure, I've found different sensors yield slightly different results at different frame rates as well. I've definitely had plenty of success at the range you refer to.

The thing that sucks about this tutorial is that it ensures we will always be aware of how crappy the photos of us are compared to the photos we take. I wish there were a good way to take good pics of yourself

Thanks for the tutorial! One lingering question - How can I safely climb with an expensive camera and ensure it can't be dropped/hit against the rock wall? I'd like to practice getting shots from above after top roping a route, but I'm worried about damaging the camera on the way up. I haven't tried it yet, but my current idea is to have the camera attached to my harness using PeakDesign's capture clip and using a wrist strap to ensure it can't be dropped when I have it unclipped for taking photos. I think this is a good setup for ensuring it can't be dropped, but I'm still not sure how to keep it safe from potentially hitting against the rock wall as I'm climbing up. Curious if you have any thoughts there or want to share what your setup looks like. I'll be shooting with a full-frame mirrorless camera and medium length telephoto lens. Again, thanks for the great video!

Sounds like a nice camera, let's switch ;-) In all honesty, I would just climb with it in it's case inside a small backpack. One important thing to accept in climbing photography is that you are gonna have to carry a few things... once you accept this, doesn't make it as bad.

If it helps: i use the type of strap that goes across your torso, and adjust the lenght to carry the camera behind my back. If i think the climb is gonna make it swing and hit the rock, i use a sling to fix the camera to my back (kind of like a backwards impromptu chest harness)

I have used a capture clip on my harness and it works pretty well. I pair that with one of Peak’s straps wearing it diagonal across my body. I like their straps because they are easily and quickly adjustable so I can keep it tight while ascending and loosen it once I get to a spot. I will also use a carabiner, quickdraw, or alpine draw to clip from a back gear loop to the strap which also helps keep it to the side and back of me (and not swinging around) while ascending.

If you’re top roping that means you could just safety jug up the route with the rope, no risk to camera. Now if your lead climbing, best to leave the camera out of it
