As someone who has searched for pruning videos that are easy to understand, I have to say this is one of the best. Very clear advice. Thanks.

Amazing detail. The titles stayed up long enough for some of us slow readers to make sense of them. And for this also, I thank you. I am a Californian, so I am in the position of learning some of her British terms. My late wife was British, but she and her lovely family spoke differently. But I will keep trying. This is worth the effort.

Hi Amanda, in your experience, does timing in the lunar month influence the effectiveness of green pruning? Do you feel that pruning paste is required? I have an almond that has massive green growth after a significant prune last winter. Thanks for the clear instructions!

I'm confused. As far as I'm aware, spur apple trees fruit on 2year old growth. So if you're cutting back to 3 buds on this year's growth, you're saying you'll get fruit buds next year. But that would make the wood only 1 year old. Surely if you prune it this summer, it will produce fruit in 2 years time?

Hello I have a question with regards to summer pruning. Would summer pruning a 5 yr. old sweet cherry tree the same way you have pruned the apple trees in this video encourage fruiting spurs/buds for next year? Or are cherry trees different with regards to summer pruning to fruit? Would it be ok to prune back to 3 inches of the new growth to encourage fruiting??
@PTESwildlifevideos7 жыл бұрын
Pruning won't necessarily encourage fruiting but it will keep the tree a bit smaller. Remember to only prune stone fruit in the summer. Formative pruning is fine but cherries tend to go to whatever shape they want no matter what you do. You can employ the renewal pruning system, by cutting out older branches to encourage a new branch in its place

PTESwildlifevideos I just heard that pruning peaches should be done in the winter only. Here I here prune them in the summer only. ??? Your clarification is very much appreciated.
@PTESwildlifevideos7 жыл бұрын
Hi Joy. Peaches fruit mostly on last year’s new growth so prune all the new bushy growth back to one lateral of each branch in late summer or spring and remove the rest. This will flower and new growth will branch off of it in turn. When a fruiting branch gets too large or old, remove it entirely and select a new branch to replace it. Peaches are fairly disease free in the UK so this can be done in summer or when they’re dormant, but different people say different things and fan-trained trees need more attention. The reason stone fruit shouldn’t be pruned in winter is the risk of silverleaf fungus, but it’s very rare on peach, probably best to be on the safe side though. I hedge my bets and prune in spring just before they start growing.

PTESwildlifevideos How many lateral branches would you recommend keeping? The tree is about 2.5 meters tall. Also, when you say "lateral" branch do you mean those which are about a 45 degree angle upwards? Thanks so much for your help☀️

PTESwildlifevideos The 3 year old apricot tree has lots of new growth; much of which is growing straight up. Would you recommend a similar pruning method for this tree as you have recommended for the peach tree? Thanks so much!☀️

Nice vid, but pruning time will vary by zone. Moreover, stone fruit trees (and Pom) should be pruned in summer, not winter, in temperate climates in an effort to decrease disease. Apricot especially, should only be pruned during dry periods in your growing area under no rain, lower humidity conditions. Summer pruning will also keep trees smaller. Lastly, there are criteria to be met before deciding to winter or summer prune. I have been growing fruit trees for 27 years as of this 2020 posting.
@carriad113 жыл бұрын
I expect you know what you are saying but the title of the posting is for apples and pears which are surely not stone fruit trees! And apricot trees are the most difficult to prune! Just because you have been doing something incorrect for 27 years does not turn it into the correct way of doing anything! I thought she did a very fine job of keeping instructions simple for someone who perhaps has never held a set of pruners!

@@carriad11 My comment was an effort to help. Your comment is venomous and far from Christian. Are you this rude to your doctor when you do not like what she has to say? What about your appliance repair person? Do you offer them your all-knowing opinion too? As I wrote, I like this vid, but she made a couple general statements regarding summer pruning that are incorrect. By the way the title of the vid read , " Summer Pruning - A video guide to summer pruning fruit trees for beginners." I was simply adding that stone fruits should be pruned in the summer to help decrease disease. Moreover, the old way was winter pruning, not summer. Apricots are not the most difficult to prune either. Additionally, winter and summer pruning time will vary by zone. How about writing something positive next time.
