Your first name tells me you have Irish connections. Your surname...Greek? That's probably wrong, apologies. In any case I think the issue is that Google is an American company, bowing to American puritanical language standards. In Europe (including Ireland), coarse language isn't such a big deal. Both Ireland and the UK allow most "vulgar" language after 9pm on TV (C U Next Tuesday being an occasional exception for some random reason). You can't even say "shit" on network TV in the US. You can say it on cable but heaven help you if you even think about saying "fuck" if you're not on a premium adult channel.

I think Cyghfer's relation of his Chase the Record run is unfathomably insightful. State of mind is ridiculously important. On that day, he was fully at peace with the possibility of failure but also fully believed he had the ability required to succeed. That's the state of mind you need to perform at your fullest potential, and it's all but impossible to call upon it on demand. It's blood-boilingly tragic that this is the video to get fucked by arbitrary profanity rules because this is a masterpiece.

TechNickL: It truly represents the way to live life in general: let go of the outcome. It allows you to do your best, be satisfied with your effort/performance whether you win or lose, and if you do win, you can actually just enjoy it instead of - compared to when you are attached to the outcome - just worrying about losing your title or experiencing some setback, which is bound to happen, but your mental state decides how to react to it. Ironically you achieve more when you are more at peace with (not necessarily indifferent to, but accepting of) the potential outcomes. Of course you still have a serious chance of failure, but it is saying something that it improves, not worsens, when you let go of the outcome. Related to this is that it reminds me of how people who do things chiefly for the accolades and trophies and such, are not the ones who usually get them, but rather it's the people who don't care so much about those things who end up getting them because their state of mind allowed them to perform better, and the awards flow naturally, whether they were particularly wanted or not. I would argue that the point of awards is more about the community _wanting_ to honor people, rather than satisfying people's wants to be honored. The distinction is clear when oftentimes, the person the community is dying to honor, often seems indifferent to the honor, or even doesn't want the credit sometimes, and that is a sign that the person very much internally understands what they achieved, and no missing of a title can take that away from them. They appreciate the essence of what they achieved, not the recognition of it. This contrasts with other players who might also play at a very high level, but may still be attached to the outcome too much, and so they haven't fully let loose on their potential to become the very best. The very best are exceptional to the rest of the great players, by definition, and it usually reflects not only exceptional technical traits, but also mental and emotional ones. I don't intend to speak in absolutes of course, but I think the trend is that the people who deserve the honor tend to be the ones who don't particularly want/need the credit. Of course this mindset needs to come up organically (by being mentally healthy, etc.), and not merely be fabricated in order to virtue-signal or something. The people with this genuine mindset are not only not in need of credit for their technical achievement, but not in need of credit even for having the mindset itself by those such as myself who notice it in them. The reason I honor it is not because these people need it but because I want to do it, and because they might like to know the people they have inspired by it, and be happy for those people, rather than be validated by those people (as great achievers already found ways to find their own internal validation to get where they are today, and it rubs off on people when they see the fruits of that mindset). It's sort of like laughing: genuine laughter is when we are trying to hold in our laughter but just can't, because the situation takes control of us (in a positive way). We laugh at these people whether they want us to laugh or not. I feel like true admiration can ooze out in this same kind of way as laughter. Where it's not that we honor out of some perceived duty, but when the "honor" feels like genuine enjoyment, to the point where, if someone told us not to honor them, we wouldn't feel relief, but instead would actually have trouble containing the honor we wanted to give them :)

Reminds me of when I was younger and I had come close but never broke the 5:00 mark for a mile. I still remember I had two bran muffins and some regular ass yogurt for breakfast. By game time it was just there. No jitters, just calm. I didn't just do it, I crushed it. I ran down that mile in 4:38 I remember my teacher just kept saying "not fast enough" every lap. I was coughing up blood by the time I was done. It was like a crazy unlock moment for "what the mind wills the body does." I did wild shit for the next two decades, swimming in freezing rivers, crawling through hundreds of meters of drainage pipe under stadium parking lots that was barely wider than my shoulders, shit at one point I got into an argument with my psychotic mother and promptly hiked off to live in the Appalachians for almost 2 years. Working from 0330 to 2230, getting 3 hours of sleep every night. Taking that opportunity to attempt an iron man schedule (sleep 15 minutes every 6 hours). It was wild. But I had no semblance of sanity and now I'm just over 40 and my body is ruined. Sometimes I can't convince myself to sit down and play some video games for an hour.

I like that you talk about the state of mind thing. And I suddenly wonder, if there is something to why someone breaking a long standing record is often then beaten themselves soon after. The longer a record stands, the more legendary it is, the more likely someone is to be tense about it. Even though beating the time that beat that time is logically harder, there is that element of "he just did it, so I think I can too"

@bsidethebox9 ай бұрын
@@memesong21 ...I'm not sure? I'm assuming you're talking about Zelda, but I don't have a copy to look at. Let me nerd out and see if that answers your question. (Excuse my word avalanche, I'm not very good at short and sweet.) So, caveats first: I'm no expert. I made art and did design for some cheap electronic toys and Plug-and-Play video games (those $20 straight-to-the-clearance-shelf themed joysticks with like 4 games on them circa 2010ish) that used the cheapest and thus smallest chips possible to keep costs down, and we used all sorts of tricks to keep our games' sizes small. I'm ultimately _assuming_ many of those tricks were holdovers from NES and arcade game development. I didn't go to school for game dev, though the coworkers that I learned from had. First, the easier one to explain: sprites *flickering*. Sprites=the things that move around the screen: MegaMan, platforms, enemies, projectiles, "explosion particles", etc. All art in the NES is broken up into 8x8 tiles, so depending on pose, MegaMan is 2-4 tiles wide. You can have 64 sprite tiles on the screen at a time, BUT only 8 sprite tiles on any single pixel horizontal line before they stop rendering. So...4 tiles for MegaMan, and if he shoots 4 bullets (1 tile each) horizontally, there's no tiles left to render an enemy on that line. But there's a trick where they'll use code to quickly alternate which tiles get rendered so more sprite tiles can occupy a single line. Imagine on frame 1, MegaMan is rendered but the enemy isn't, frame 2, MM isn't but the enemy is, repeat...it's so fast that your eyes and brain have no trouble parsing who/what is where, but visually, you still see the flicker as the tiles quickly cycle on and off. This is incredibly common in old games. From what I understand, the flicker usually isn't a problem for epileptics, as the sprites make up only a small portion of the screen and each flicker is only one frame.
@bsidethebox9 ай бұрын
@@memesong21 (Continued) The _flashing_ is different, and I think way more likely to cause epileptic issues. For special effects and highlights and whatnot, we used a trick called 'palette swapping' to keep things as small as possible, and I think something similar is happening here. To make things smaller, the code for each pixel in a tile didn't specify its color. Instead, each tile (sprite or background) indexes a spot in a 'palette'--a group of colors. The games I made usually had 8 or 16 color palettes, but I think the NES was limited to 4 color palette...which are actually 3 color palettes, because the first color is always "transparent". MegaMan is a great example for this: his blue outfit changes to different colors to indicate the different powers, right? So all you need to understand is that it's the same tiles/art and the only thing that changes is that it's indexing a different palette. This means the actual art is encoded not as "transparent, black, blue, blue, aqua, aqua, blue, black", but as "color# 1,2,3,3,4,4,3,2" and the code says "when MegaMan is blue, index palette 1(transparent, black, blue, aqua), when he's red, index from palette 2 (transparent, black, red, pink)". Now here's the "trick". The NES loads 8 palettes at a time, 4 for background and 4 for sprites. Say we want to indicate an enemy taking damage. If it's a 4 tile sprite, we could swap to another frame of animation (cost: 4 tiles in ROM, and processing power to draw those 4 tiles), or use an overlay (cost: 4 tiles in ROM, processing power to bring in those tiles, PLUS we're at 8 tiles in our scanline so likely hello flicker-time/processing power to cycle the tiles in and out as explained above)...OR! we have an alternate palette, wherein instead of transparent, black, blue, aqua, the colors are transparent, aqua, white, white, and code it so when the enemy takes damage, it indexes palette 2 for a couple of frames, then palette 1 for a couple of frames, then palette 2, before settling out back at its normal palette 1. This'll look like the blue-with-a-black outline enemy flashes to white-with-an-aqua-outline twice when it's damaged, and all it costs is a tiny bit of processing power to switch the palette. (Take for example the big fish @ 5:10). Swapping to an alternate palette with transparent, white, transparent, transparent would make a transparent "ghost" with just a white outline. All with negligible cost to cartridge size and working memory. And the background tiles can be palette swapped too--like making the black background flash white @6:51. We used palette swaps for all sorts of things--hiding textures or features within background tiles, changing text colors to highlight menu options, even simulating animation, like "scrolling" conveyor belts or twinkling stars, without additional frames by swapping through multiple palettes. I'm pretty sure the trippy "animated" backgrounds for the Lavos Core boss fight in Chrono Trigger are just a series of palette swaps on a single frame background (the SNES has 16 color palettes, with 8 palette slots for background tiles at any one time.) It was a great trick, but especially with the NES limitations, with 4(3) color palettes (and I think only 64 preset colors to choose from), it's not surprising that there's a lot of painful flashing effects.
