Late in December, former Yokozuna Kakuryu assumed the role of Stablemaster Otowayama and founded his own sumo stable, situated not far from the Kokugikan. Despite currently having only four disciples under his guidance, the latest addition to the sumo stablemasters is committed to nurturing sumo champions, much like himself.

Hello, and thank you for tuning in to SUMO PRIME TIME. Before we delve into our latest edition, we want to express our sincere gratitude to all of you for watching Tochinoshin’s retirement ceremony, which we covered earlier this month. The show has already been viewed over 400,000 times, and the number continues to rise day by day. As I mentioned during the broadcast, we hold nothing but respect and gratitude for the Georgian sumo hero and wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors. Shifting our focus to our latest feature, which highlights a sumo hero from Mongolia embarking on a new endeavor. In late December, former Yokozuna Kakuryu assumed the role of Stablemaster Otowayama and founded his own sumo stable, located not far from the Kokugikan. Despite currently having only four disciples under his guidance, this latest addition to the sumo stablemasters is committed to nurturing sumo champions, much like himself. I've known Kakuryu for a long time, and one admirable aspect of the man is that he hasn't changed a bit. He remains the same calm and collected gentleman I met two decades ago. My gut feeling tells me that he's destined to become a very successful stablemaster and will raise strong and popular rikishi in the not-too-distant future. We hope you enjoy the show featuring Stablemaster Otowayama!

It echos what a lot of new coaches are saying across all sports. New players want to know why they should do something rather than simply being told to do it and obeying it. It seems to be working very well in other sports so I’m curious how it will work in sumo.

@hithere5005 That's how we do it at the Phoenixville Sumo Club ... always What, How, and Why. The Why part is important because once they understand the Why ... the what and how come easily' It also helps o build a Sumo intelligence. We have found ways to show the Why so that it is clear.

He is humble because out of all the Mongolian Yokozunas, he's the one that took the knot through sheer hardwork and intellect. Talent-wise he's the most average out of the 5. Which also means that he'll probably become the best teacher amongst the Mongolian Yokozunas. If Asashoryu is Mike Tyson and Hakuho is Ali, then Kakuryu is the Wladimir Klitschko of Sumo.

Kakuryu seems like such a gentle, wise soul. I hope he leads his young recruits to glory. I do appreciate not just asking softball questions, but digging deeper into the existential issues for sumo such as the diminishing number of recruits. Kakuryu is right that sumo needs to take care of all its rikishi after retirement, even those who don't make it to the paid ranks. For every top tier rikishi there are dozens who never touch the salaried ranks.

(Also, getting a great chanko chef is half the battle. No one wants to eat bad food.) I wonder if he will institute a continuing education program? I think there are a couple of stables that encourage their youngsters to finish high school. It will be interesting to see what happens if, as I expect, most or all of Michinoku beya's rikishi join Otowayama beya after Michinoku closes in March. Not only will their numbers increase, but they'll most likely have an Ozeki among their numbers. Michinoku also has two coaches. I hope that Otowayama-san can manage the abrupt shift in dynamics.

An even keeled stablemaster, who takes individual care to each of his rikshi, thus would grow it to 20, so he can give individualized dirction and coaching. He is not a do as i say, not as i do kind of coach. He will coach by example. Love he doesn't onmt focus on sumo and winning but the overall development from teenagers to young men, who will represent the JSA. Forward thinking. Very smart reflective gentlemen. And hes a great singer too! I think he sings Frank Sinatra's, My Way, far better than ole blue eyes himself, in English! That's one of the things that irks me about Mongolians. The indoctrination of Genghis as a national hero is strong. It's like Chinese hanging up a portrait of Mao, Russians a portrait of Stalin, or Koreans of Kim Il Sung hundreds of years from now. But with more violence, death, and wiping out of cultures/societies.

considering kakuryu and hakuho's relationship, it'd be nice if they will hold inter stable sessions in the future.

I'm quickly became enthralled with the sport of sumo after watching a Strength Unknown episode on Sumo. I hope to find a club/gym/organization stateside that will allow me to learn and train in the art.
