Hello and welcome to another edition of SUMO PRIME TIME. We thank you so much for tuning in to the show. Only one tournament to go in 2023 and we’re so anxious to see how the final competition of the year will unfold in Fukuoka. Now, as you know, sumo wrestlers compete in a grand tournament with a hope of winning the top division title and the coveted Emperor’s Cup. But sumo is more than just two huge athletes pushing and shoving each other in the ring to show their strength and grit. It’s called Japan’s national sport for a reason. We wanted to take a moment to reintroduce how unique and wonderful sumo is, because it is not just a sport, but also plays a role in preserving and handing down Japanese tradition, values and culture. The clip explains what makes sumo special and the secret behind its longevity. We hope it increases your love for the sport. Arigato!! Now, here’s a reminder of the next grand sumo tournament which takes place in Fukuoka, southwestern Japan. The final tourney of the year will get underway on Sunday, November 12. The tickets are now on sale. For more information, please log on to the site below.

Great as always. It's nice to see the Arashio fellas at it and it's great to see that Wakatakakage has resumed training. Hope he has fully recovered his knee. He's gonna bulldoze thru the ranks in the upcoming tournaments.

I think they are using here old stuff from when Hiro visisted arashio beya a while back. Kotokuzan having a white mawashi isnt fitting. But Waka did resumed training tho, probably coming back for the next basho actually

That's old footage from SPT's visit to Arashio beya few months ago. WTK is on the mend, though. Gagamaru recently paid a visit to Arashio for his channel. It shows WTK having practice bouts, albeit with unsalaried rikishi. He has a scar on his knee, but he wasn't wearing a knee brace. He looked good. A Yahoo! Japan article from yesterday states that it is not certain that he will participate in the Kyusho basho, but it is likely if he continues to progress well. Arashio is moving to its Fukuoka camp next weekend. I got the impression that he plans to travel with them, and will make a final decision there. If he fights, his Makushita division opponents are going to have a rough go of it.

I was happy to see my boy Ura in there, but honestly, he is right at average for weight and height. I think he looks "small" sometimes because of his low tachiai and he carries his bulk proportionally around his body more than most rikishi. The video overall was great. This is all the info I would try to explain to someone about sumo if i only had 5-10 minutes.

Thank you, Hiro, for the summary of what Sumo is! I was hoping to find the answer to my question about the ritual (movement) when all the sekitoris entered the ring, making a circle. What it means when they turned inside, lifting their ornamental mawashi, tried to clap, and clap, raised arms, looking up. ...Hope you know what I am talking about. I bet it means something important. If you have a chance, please explain it to us. 😀

I really hope there'll be more sumo with English commentary in the future, getting more and more into it after watching Sanctuary on Netflix and having an official source to go to would be great since all the youtubers uploading videos are quickly removed due to copyrights.

Please, NHK, make it possible to watch full sumo tournaments - even just Juryo and Makuuchi - online! I can't afford an entire Japanese channel just to watch sumo 90 days per year, but I would love to be able to see more than just what's highlighted here!

@@youremakingprogress144 yes they are online during a basho. Just google it and the nhk website should come up. They do take them down after the basho however. In addition, like another commenter stated, there are other youtube channels that pop up during a basho but they normally do not have English commentary
@aszechy Жыл бұрын
Yes, NHK world has a website where you can find all the previous day's makuuchi bouts condensed to half an hour with English commentary, for free. If you don't want to wait a day (or you also want juryo), you have to keep following Nattosumo to whichever platform he happens to be at on his quest to hide from the copyright inspectors 😅

@LauraJdogmom Жыл бұрын
You can get a VPN (usually pretty inexpensive) with at least one server in Japan and watch Abema coverage. Abema's coverage is not as good as NHK's--they don't have as many camera angles--but it is certainly adequate. Also in their favor, they cover the ENTIRE basho, including maezumo if there is any, beginning with the first bout all the way to the digging up of the sacred packet and the gyoji toss. NHK has many fewer hours of coverage, and they sign off at 6 pm Japan time. Occasionally, they will preempt sumo for breaking news. Abema just has ads.
