I love how he associates "cast iron" with a good pump disregarding any other components. In my experience, two plunger type switches have failed on "high end" pumps forcing my battery back up to kick in, both of which were constructed of CAST IRON. I bought a 1/3 hp thermo plastic pump with a buoy type switch instead (with a one year warranty) it is now 3 tears old and it has held up very well in Canadian melting periods of 5 feet+ of snow. This year, It has been running every 2 minutes for 48 hours+ with no issues.

Your vertical floats failed? What BRAND did you have? Did you do the annual maintenance like cleaning out the basin of debris? Was there enough space around the float, all wires out of the way and not directly in front of the inlet? I had a 25yr old Zoeller cast iron sump pump that just finally the float went out on. Now I use a Zoeller cast iron with level guard switch, not a float.

@@clintmurdock119 Hey Dipshit, he didn't say the vertial FLOAT failed, he said the "Plunger type SWITCHES" failed!!! SWITCH, not float dipshit!! cleaning out debris isn't gonna do SHIT for the switch!!!! The switches are a COMMON FAILURE for many pumps, including cast iron. There is no "annual maintenance" for a plunger SWITCH, so wake up, pull your head out your ass, and stop trying to act like a fucking know-it-all.

THANK YOU! Mine backyard pump seems to have stopped working and I am a new homeowner which means I know nothing! I can use this as a reference so I can buy a new one today. Might have to go as close as possible to the best standard in order to get this pump installed. Very disappointing you didnt make it to the Zoeller pumps on the end which is exactly what I have and they are VERY heavy and cast iron almost entirely. The things are literally built like tanks.

exactly!! THis dipshit is GUEESING about this and that, WONDERING if the plastic may crack. How about a little REALITY CHECK!!! The switches only last 3-5 years typically. regardless of pump. Mine have lasted over 10 yrs, but the average is 3-5

This isn't a comparison. This is a non cast iron bashfest:-D Anyway, I agree. Do not use anything that's not cast iron. And whatever you do, don't even think about getting a rigid. I had 3 of those...they all failed within a year. I finally told home depot to take their trash and their lifetime warranty and shove it.

Not so much about cast iron as "Made in USA" Liberty and Zoeller [not from box stores!] Plastic is actually great because its doesn't encrust and rot like HDPE.

Respectfully I have to disagree. Cast Iron pump rust badly and the impeller gets jammed up. I hate plastic impellers because they strip out when you turn them on. Stainless is really the only way to go if you want something to last.

Had a heavy cast Iron, made in USA, Zoeller M53-D. Switch failed. replacement switch inside cast iron housing was cheap plastic. It's all about the integration of all the parts, not just the housing. Typical American cro mag mentality...If I buy American and it's heavy, its good. Nope. FOr example, Tsurumi are some of the best pumps out there and they have some plastic parts and are designed and/or made in Japan.
