Bitcoin mixers are not that great though, its very expensive, especially with that kind of money. It's probably smarter to exchange the BTC to monero and then back to BTC. It's cheaper and safer (BTC mixers are often scam).

one note when dealing with bitcoin: it is not fully anonymous, so any attempt to launder money would be the same as the car-wash example. it would be better to use Monero for it actually hides the sender and recipient automatically, not just makes one-time pseudo-anonymous id's (as you stated with bitcoin wallets) which can, yes, be backtracked to the origin. by FBI or anyone else with the time and money to do correlation attacks. also question, how do you think they find out they were "illicit" purchases? also mixers are a good thing due to it increasing the fungibility (the ability for 1 dollar to equal 1 dollar) of bitcoin (the actual ability to use them, cause the ones "caught" by the cops gets a permanent record and thus are worth less than "virgin" bitcoins). doesnt matter if you use monero. When fbi ask you where you got 1.3 milion usd from, you need to be able to proove the source of the funds. " i got them from a friend" Then you have to show fbi who your friend are and als he will have to show reciept of the funds he sent you. You cant just make the transaction anonomous and think fbi ill not charge you for money laundering. Proof of work and proof of funds is what you need to explain.

Laundering funds through crypto is complicated if not impossible at higher values. You have to find a seller or sellers(s) who will be willing to trade on a darknet market or non-kyc exchange. These exchanges simply do not have that Liquidity. Not to mention the element of trust involved, sending parcels of cash by mail hoping they don't get stopped on the way or meeting a complete stranger in person with huge stacks of cash. This hypothetical scenario of yours just skips many important details that would make it impossible.

Wouldn't it be better to buy mining equipment with cash, and rent a decommissioned factory with existing power infrastructure? He could choose a area close to a hydropower plant for cheap electricity. Then he could rent it out to a third party for a cut of the virgin crypto. Another solution could be to set up a bunch of companies and lease single rooms in office complexes. Buy mining equipment and put it in a locked closet and run it 24/7 . Afterwards he could rent out the office space to legit businesses. The invoices to the power company would be so small that they could easily be paid in cash by smurfs who visits different banks.
