I grew up in Sumter. This drive through is so appreciated. The lack of automobile traffic is very striking. There are no people to speak of either. I recognized streets and some neighborhoods. The city is so clean and tidy. It is nice to see how the city is well maintained. Thanks for the memories...

I grew up in Sumter as well. The streets are quiet or empty because its Sunday afternoon. My daddy had the only jewelry store in town in the 50's and 60's. It was a wonderful place to grow up.......I wish I had never left there. It becomes more precious to me as the years go by. Fav spot was Swan Lake. I lived on Alice Drive across from Aldersgate Church.

It’s sad to see downtown Sumter looking like a ghost town. It use to be so busy and full of life. All the shops had a store full of shoppers. This is my home town . I grew up here. I walked these downtown streets many many a day. Where did all the people go!
@Comm0ut Жыл бұрын
There are plenty of people but they live in much nicer areas than downtown which is too SMALL and too OLD to be desirable. Sumter should have leveraged sprawl and demolished those old buildings (exceptingt the few notable structures) because they just do not suit modern quality of life. Buyers invest in homes in Sumter COUNTY but not Sumter town. Most of the crime is still in the same areas you would expect and the county itself is a good place to live. I've been here since 1985 and retired out of Shaw in 2007.
@turhan6875 Жыл бұрын
This is especially interesting for me to see as I am of Turkish origin. Because, appearently, there is a community in this county that claims to be of Turkish ethnicity, being descendants of an immigrant who has immigrated to the US from the Ottoman Empire. Thank you for this video. Although there isn't much to explore on this town, I'd really love to visit there one day and hopefully reach out to one of the settlers living there and who claims to be of Turkish origin to exchange ideas and have a conversation.
@piratepete8423 ай бұрын
That would be the Benenhaley family..as well as the Oxendines..descendants of Scott Benengale a Ottoman seaman who became a bugler for General Thomas Sumter..Sumter bequeathed lands to the Benenhaley family ..this land is said to be that area now occupied by Shaw Field
@turhan68753 ай бұрын
