Sun Bears Locked in Tiny Cages: The Heartbreaking Truth

In 2022, I travelled to Sumatra to collaborate with The Sumatran Sun Bear Team (SSBT), a not-for-profit organization established in 2017. SSBT is dedicated to alleviating the suffering of sun bears in Sumatra, focusing on rescuing and rehabilitating those affected by the illegal wildlife trade and habitat loss. Founded by Lesley Small, who has over 35 years of experience working with animals and shares a special bond with sun bears, the charity’s work is essential to their conservation efforts.
SSBT partnered with the Orangutan Information Centre (OIC) and Sumatran Rescue Alliance (SRA), and they now have legal connections with the Indonesian local Government to allow for the rescue, care and rehabilitation of Sun Bears on the land that they have gifted them.
The Sumatran Sun Bear Trust (SSBT) operates under the Ministry of the Environment and Forestry, ensuring all efforts align with national conservation priorities.
