I actually attempt to make a sun drop approximation resembling that of a certain Arthurian board game using 50 cent craft paints.

You do have great painting skills. But you failed hard with camera skills.

Spray with an off-white (whatever base color you want) primer. Wash with army painter strong tone. Spray with matte sealer. Done.

@@addictedtominisandlovingit3912 Its' technically a faster method, but I'm not knocking your process. It's just another way of achieving a similar effect. I've been collecting methods from Dan PDM, Black Magic Craft, etc. for years. I'm always trying to find faster ways to get to "pretty good."

I just couldn't get gesso to stick to Tainted Grail minis... even after washing them two times.
@addictedtominisandlovingit39124 жыл бұрын
Try soaking them in alcohol for 24 hours. If that doesn't work just skip the gesso or try a spray on

Glad that I found this video, was looking for cheap and easy way to get an effect like this for my boardgame minis and wow - this is it :) I also watched briefly your other video (Tutorial: play and prime for any board game) and one question though: how important for end result is step where you apply gesso? I'm afraid I will make it to thick or something and it would be all cloggy on the minis, losing the details. Can I just spray paint the primer and follow the next step without applying gesso?
@addictedtominisandlovingit39123 жыл бұрын
Depends on how well you clean the miniature and the type of plastic it is made of. Thin the gesso well, and you shouldn't have trouble. Although a spray on primer or no primer at all may work. Again it depends on the plastic involved.

Isn't the effect of "sundrop" just zenithal priming... Spray everything black... Use a middle tone color gray, tan, gold, etc at 45 degree angle and then finish white at 90 degree angle.
@addictedtominisandlovingit39123 жыл бұрын
Yes... but this is drybrushing for the same effect, only cheaper. The colors used here were because of a board game called "tainted grail fall of Avalon."

This is exactly what I was looking for to get into painting. I LOVE the color of the sun drop from my pledge and was really wanting to recreate it in my other games just to add more detail and get that ugly plastic color gone. I didn’t want to do a full paint because I have no idea how lol and because of that experience I thought it’d cheapen the look and make it look like cheap toys. You mention going lighter for the exact replica, any suggestions on that or colors to use? Or do you just mean hitting it with the white? Anything you’d change now after seeing the Tainted Grail minis in hand if you have them? Cheers, love the video. Keep it up! Would love seeing more with a tripod and seeing how you do the whole process. (:

I would suggest a darker wash at the end... more than anything. Thanks btw. My problem is I haven't recieved my copy of tainted grail yet. So i don't know how close I am. I will say, you can do this same thing with just dark gray, tans to white and get a stone effect that is very nice.
