@@TheHighlanderLawn Think its all wife's. Mine says that i've become a grass/lawn snob, and when we go for a walk in the neighbourhood, i make comments (with out thinking) oh they are using the wrong seed, or they need to dethatch their lawn. I'm a new home owner and the last owner had no green thumb, so I turned to youtube to learn how to fix it. And then become hooked. I've bought a groundskeeper 2 and a seed spreader, dissolved all the clay soil, removed bindi by hand, and sprayed for weeds, over seeded, and recently scarified my lawn and dethatched it, now trying to find iron from local suppliers, recently added urea. But apart from the wife comments, she loves the results, she gets to walk out in barefeet and enjoy the lush lawn, and as you drive down the street it simply is the best lawn in the street. So much that a couple of my retire neighbours have asked about what i've been doing. Keep up the great videos!

I've been looking at doing a "dethatch" & "overseed" for years. Early last winter I did just the overseed and now that it's spring, I'm seeing some "fair" results. I'm confident it would be 10 times better if more seed got in touch with the soil. Time to buy a Sunjoe!
@TheHighlanderLawn Жыл бұрын
Debbie, yes the scarifier attachment will be your best option to prep the lawn to receive an overseed. Please be aware that it is MUCH more aggressive than the dethatcher tine attachment. Also mow the lawn as short as you can prior to applying the Sun Joe. I have a video where the owner did not mow as low as he should have and I still applied the SJ and it totally bound up and dang near burned up the unit. So it is true....."you can learn a lot from a dummy".LOL Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

When should you use the Raking cylinder rather than the Scarifying cylinder and what is the difference?
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
Jerry i would use the scarifier cylinder when doing an over seeding/rehab project and/or when you are looking to do a heavy debris removal. The raking tined cylinder will remove debris, the scarifier will also create a shallow “trench” that will also allow for seed to rest and allow for better seed to soil contact

Now does the scarifying wheel do the same thing as what an aerator would?
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
No, an aerator pulls plugs of sod, thatch layer and soil from the ground and is used primarily for relieving soil compaction. A scarifier blade creates a tiny (size of the blade) type trench and opens up the turf to "breathe" a little better because the excess debris has been removed but it also helps with giving an overseeding project the opportunity to increase the chance of seed to soil contact. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

I’ve never dethatched or used a scarifier. I want to reseed my lawn, should I detach first then use the scarifier or just use the scarifier?
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
Depending on how thick your lawn is and how much debris the unit will pull out (also how long it has been since your last debris removal) If it has been more than 2 years I would say you could easily do both. But remember when you do and you are finished; your lawn will look REALLY beat up. But remember your grass is resilient and it will rebound quickly with the overseed, fert and proper irrigation. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future

@@TheHighlanderLawn I have never done anything to the lawn besides mowing it. That’s why I was asking what should I do first and you wouldn’t happen to have a video on reseeding? So it’s fertilizer, vitamins, then the seed plus the water? Also where I I live is like 100+, so I’m assuming the dethatching/Scarified should be done during a 60 degree weather?

nono559 Here is a link to the my 7 part series from last year of "Help me fix my Ugly Lawn" kzbin.info/www/bejne/bIasinudeZJ4jtE. I show what steps I took to help to rehab my neighbors lawn. Now as a matter of context. We began this in the early spring, with dethatching and scarifying the lawn, and then took the steps to improve it an make it look great. With it rolling into the fall and dependent on where you live you may be able to do all of the steps this year before your lawn may go dormant, or some of the steps and then pick it back up again in the spring. But I believe you could definitely get the scarifying and overseed down this fall for sure. I would suggest that your temps could be as high as 75-80 when you scarify and overseed, due to the fact that temps will begin to go down over the next 2 months, Just make sure that you are watering enough to keep the seed to soil contact damp. (Not saturated and swampy nor allowing it to ever get dried out) just consistent watering to keep the soil damp enough to the depth of inbetween your first and second knuckle from your fingertip (1-1.5 inches). I hope that helps .

Do you think using the bag would help pick up acorns? I'm waiting on mine to get to my house and was curious what you think about using the bag and the dethatch attachment for acorns.
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
I have never tried it to pick up things like acorns. If they are deeper in the grass, it would definitely help lift them up. But I do not know what the result on the machine would be. The bag is quite small and fills up fast from the dead debris that is lifted out. If you have done a hard dethatch prior, then the bag would probably be adequate to use on something possibly like that. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

I would like to do this to my lawn and ordered one of these machines from Home Depot. I am on there Texas gulf coast and am worried about temperatures. Can I safely do this right before the blazing summer? I feel like like this is one of my main problems.

James, congrats on getting yourself a Sun Joe. I think that you will really find it valuable. If you are in TX around the gulf, I would imagine that you have a warm season type grass. I must admit I am not as familiar with those types of grasses. But I do know that you are approaching the time of year when your grass goes into to high gear growth mode. So with that being said, if you were to apply the machine with in the next few weeks it would be on the road to repair itself and you should be fine. Thank you for the comment. @TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know the 798e is 1.5 amps smaller, and 2 inches less on the tine width. And probably most important is about $30-40 in price. LOL. They are so close that for me, I would pop for the 805e and call it good. Best of luck in your search.

My 1st choice I have watched 2 of your videos about dethatchers and have made up my mind that the Sun Joe is the best choice for me. One question though, I have never dethatched my lawn which attachment should I use first? Cruz
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
If this is your first time using the dethatcher. I would make sure to NOT do a dethatching in the heat of the summer (if you have cool season turf, like Kentucky Bluegrass, Rye, etc. Best temps I believe are 75-65 F. Please make sure that you cut the grass as short as you are comfortable with before applying the unit. (The shorter the better) This will help to not overload the unit trying to work through super long grass and causing it to possibly overheat. I would begin by using the tined cylinder (per the owner's manual instructions suggested height) then if you feel like you are wanting to hit it some more then the scarifier can be applied. Every lawn is different and may not take well to using both in one setting, but I have not experienced any issues other than the warnings I spoke of in the beginning. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Thanks for the comparison. Good video. Two questions for you . 1.) Does the Sunjoe come with spare tines, since I think the Greeenworks does? 2.) What is the difference in price from the 801 to the 805?
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
You are very welcome, and thank you!! The Sun Joe comes with two cylinders (the more aggressive scarifier, and the tined dethatching cylinder.) They do not supply additional replacement tines. If you use the machine as it is intended to, and it doesn’t come in contact with any large foreign object. You should be okay. The difference in price is the 801e is currently $119, last year they had a shortage on that model and I was seeing $300+ on most retailers and a little higher on eBay. The 805e is at $179. It is more, but both do a great job. I have links to both in the description area of this video. If you are looking to get one they can be used as shortcuts to the product search. I'm not familiar with the cords. can I use a 50ft 12 Guage cord? also do I avoid the sprinkler heads when I dethatche?
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
No worries, a 12 gauge electrical extension cord is about the size of the body of a Sharpie Marker or pretty close to a half inch in diameter. Remember that the higher the number the smaller the cord (gauge) in diameter. If you know exactly where all your heads are, just go around them. If you are not quite sure, run the system and place something to mark the 'hidden" ones locations. Sprinkler Marker Flags are a fantastic way to do this, as that is what all sprinkler companies use to mark their layouts. You can purchase these on Amazon for super cheap. Which one is better?
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
As far as overall results, they are honestly very closely matched. The major differences are the 805e has the adjustable handle, one additional Amp in the motor and a wider body. They are currently experiencing out of stock issues almost everywhere on both. But they usually have that problem fixed by the end of July - August. I would truly recommend either they are both great machines. The new 805e has been priced at about $60 more than the 801e. So those are the major differences, I saw about an equal amount of debris pulled out from both. So if you like the height adjustment, and have $60 more to give. Then I would go with the 805e. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Would this work well on centipede grass?
@TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
I must admit I have never dethatched centipede grass and do not have much experience with it. I do know that centipede does tend to have a woody stalk which is a little bit different from most turf grasses, but from everything I have read, it can be dethatched and May to first part of June is the best time to do so. It is recommended to do this during that window as warm season grasses growth season is in late June to end of August, this would allow your grass to repair and heal itself and fill in the areas that were cleaned up. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

To start with I have not tried the battery powered Sun Joe dethatcher. I really like the battery powered tools out there (ie EGO, Toro, etc.) , because who likes cords..not I !! I am not aware that Elon Musk has dabbled in lawn care tools, but when he does....we should be getting there! LOL. Of course I am joking about Mr. Musk but we are seeing such great advancements with battery tech that it could be a great machine. The 801e is a great product, and you would not be disappointed in any way!! With great cord management you would do very well to get the 801e and get that dead debris out from choking your lawn and keeping it from reaching it's potential. Thank you for the comment. Steven, thank you for the support. So as I state in the video, be sure to mow that lawn at least one notch lower that you normally do. Then when cleaning up, I have had SO much debris that I have raised it up to just shy of the top notch. Your rotary mower acts like a vacuum and this raised setting pass is doing just that. I then make my last pass to back to the previous setting to make sure that the remaining debris gets picked up. @TheHighlanderLawn3 жыл бұрын
Roy, Thank you for the support. Congrats on getting the 801! I am of the mind that not going gung ho on it to begin with is always better. I think that if you were to use the dethatcher tines, it would be a great first run. Check how much dead vs good grass comes out and then clean it up, and determine if it could handle another pass. If you think that the scarifier is needed then apply it. I would suggest going in a different direction than the first pass with the dethatching tines. That way you are getting the grass that may be missed the time before. When it all comes down to it. Your grass may take a slight beating, but with some watering (1 inch a week in spring and fall, 1.5 /week in the summer) and some decent fertilizer with a good nitrogen count in it, should help revive that grass because it is SO resilient. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Removing the dead debris will allow for the healthy grass that remains to flourish and grow stronger and thicker. So don't be too alarmed when you do see some green get pulled up with the bad. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

I have been looking at dethatchers and would like to own one. What do you over sees with?

Wayne, I usually overseed with a KBG variety. I have used the Bewitched KBG, and may be using the GCI Turf "Blue Heat" this year. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Is this worth selling the older model and getting the newer one?. I've had the older one for just over two years. I'm in Washington State and have a lot of moss growth. This thing comes in handy.

Abbie, I would say that for right now. If you have the older model and it is working fine. I would hold off. The prices have jumped up on all of these machines and probably will not come down until closer to Jan-Feb of 2022. That's when the production supply will be replenished and since most of us in the states are not thinking of doing any debris removal, they are much cheaper then, and by March folks are getting back into the fact that spring is around the corner. I lived in Washington state for 8 years (over on the south east side. (Tri-cities) and made it over the Cascades on several occasions, YES you do have to deal A LOT with that. Thank you for your comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Nice videos, been trying to determine which brand, def going with sun joe, your thoughts on the cordless?
@TheHighlanderLawn2 жыл бұрын
Thank you, I appreciate the support. I definitely love doing the product comparisons. Sun Joe is definitely a great product. In regards to the cordless units, what I have seen and heard is obviously the upside is that the "cutting of the cord" is very nice, but with that the biggest downside is that the battery lasts about 20ish minutes, and takes about 1 - 1.5 hours to recharge. Now if you wish to dethatch an area and then clean up the dead debris afterwards while the battery is charging, you could make it work. So what I see is that this could extend out the time it takes to get the job done, depending on how much square footage you are dealing with. Plus that the cordless is sitting at $249 on Amazon in comparison to $175 for the 805e and $139 for the 801e. I hope that this helps you in your decision making. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.

Just found your channel great info. Great comparison video. The results were a little surprising in that there was little difference, but kind of expected. This is a great product, maybe if I don’t win this one my wife will get me one. You’ll be at 2k subs in no time.

William I apologize for the delayed response. Thank you for the very kind comment. Yes the SJ is an awesome little unit that does a unbelievable job in clearing out dead debris. Best of luck in the drawing. I certainly hope that 2k comes quickly. Thank you for the comment. I hope to hear from you in the future.
