Helpful hint: when using electrical lawn tools, always start from the house where the plug is so that you are always walking away from it. That eliminates most of the cord shifting.

OMG!!!! I did this dethatching with the SUNJOE! I did it 3 times, 2 parallel and 1 diagonal and it COMPLETELY RUINED MY YARD! My grass WAS lush, long and thick, but I did it WAY TOO LATE in the season and so my lawn didn't have enough time to come back before Fall and Winter hit and in the spring, crabgrass and creeping Charlie weeds took over before my grass could grow back. It has now been 2 full seasons of using Pre-emergents and fertilizers to try to get my lawn back to the way it was before. Long story short: DON'T Dethatch TOO AGRESSIVELY and DON'T DO IT TOO LATE in the season! Good luck out there!

I love when homeowners take pride in their homes and lawns. I have to pay for someone else to take care of my lawn now due to a stroke. I love teaching the young kids in my neiborhood how to care for their lawn. A few of them ask if they can borrow lawn tools so they can make their lawns look as good as mine. One young man wanted to do it as a gift to his hard working mother. God bless kids like this one and his mother. She taght him well. I generally don’t like lawns, and find them to be useless wastes of resources. Lawns for most people are useless money dumps. The great American workers that built the US didn’t have them. Back then lawns were generally a display of wealth, a display mimicking British royalty. They had yards and gardens, but none of this groomed sissy lawn bullshit. I watch my idiot neighbor bag his yard every time he cuts it, just for him to turn around and dump hundreds of dollars worth of petrol product on it, to replace what he just bagged up.

@Jazz 16 This is why you should collect the grass cuttings when you mow. If you mulch them this is what it turns into. Grass doesn't really break down unless it is in a much warmer environment like a compost bin.

I use my clippings in the vegetable garden. I spread them out about 4" thick then rototill them deep into the soil. They break down quickly in the soil. Pretty sandy soil in my neighborhood but not where I've had my garden. I move the location every so many years and the grass grows so much nicer where I've had the garden in the past. It holds the moisture better after I've built it up. The grass clippings from cutting the lawn get spread out in the garden to keep weeds from growing throughout the season.

Important tip: if you have sprinklers, don't use the heavier attachment (scarifier). The thinner ones are spring loaded to avoid anything that isn't grass. The scarifier will destroy the tops of sprinklers. If you know exactly where they are or mark them then you'd be fine.

Thanks for the video. I got one last year and love it and showed this to my dad so he could see how much it pulls out. I learned three tricks to share with everyone. 1) propping the back chute/panel open just a bit helps to let the machine clear the debris out better. 2) Always work away from your power and it's easier to avoid the cord. 3) You need more overlap on this than a lawn mower. I found 4-5 inches was good.

Pro tip from someone who almost exclusively uses corded machines: Throw the extension cord over your shoulder when operating the machine. That helps keep it out of the way.

I used a very similar machine on my lawn against the advice of a "Lawn Care Guru" on KZbin. My machine is an earlier version (2 yrs old) and did not come with a scarifying blade. Also, more importantly, I used my machine on "St Augustine" grass which grows via stallons and can become quite thick and spongy. With that in mind, I can not go at my lawn as hard or thorough as you're able to. I probably could go deeper/harder with a modified scarifying blade. 2 years ago my St. Augustine lawn was very thick with thatch and caused browning and disease areas. As I mentioned, I contacted a "professional" via his KZbin channel asking if he has ever dethatched a St. Augustine lawn. His channel had a lot of St. Augustine care content so I figured he would know. His response to my question was, "Absolutely NOT ever" in a very condescending way. His opinion contradicted the Univerisity of Texas study and recommendations. This left me with a few choices; 1.) Leave the lawn alone. 2.) Hire a professional 3.) Have the lawn replaced 4.) Rent a machine and give it a try. Choice 1 was an option but it was driving me nuts because it looked bad. Choice 2 wasn't really a strong thought. I didn't know a good gardener experienced enough to trust and it would be more than I was willing to pay. Choice 3 was viable but expensive to rip out and replace a lawn. Choice 4 was my choice.....sort of. I was going to rent a machine but I discovered I couldn't adjust the blade width for St. Augustine lawns (the blades need to be set wider). As part of my lengthy searching, I found a machine similar to your machine. Slightly over $100, adjustable, and it would be mine. Also, in a worst-case scenario, it would only cost me a little over $100 to find out if it worked and how well. If it couldn't handle my lawn I could just return it or sell it to recover cash. So here's what happened. The machine arrived in a couple days. I removed every other rake-tine. This has to be done for St. Augustine as to not be too aggressive. I mowed my lawn as short as I could go without ruining the lawn. Then I ran the thatcher over it fairly slow and carefully. I was shocked at how much dead material came out. Like your lawn, bags, and bags. Afterward, I did another mow over it and used the leaf-blower to really get the dead material out. Lastly, the real magic happened when I fertilized with "Milorganite". I let the lawn rest 2 weeks with no mowing. It turned into a brand new lawn and was the best in the neighborhood by a wide margin. It stayed solid green for 2 years and very healthy. I just did the same process about a week ago. I already know the results will be awesome.

@@ThatTechTeacher427 in general your results will be great. Removing the dead grass allows the good grass to thrive. If you want to go nuclear, rent an aerator and then fertilize with Milorganite. The Milorganite will shock your mind as to how good it works.

As I pointed out, a 'lawn guru' on youtube told me to never use a dethatcher or scarifier on St Augustine. He said I would destroy my lawn. Well he was dead wrong and I unsubbed his channel. Texas A&M has done research on St. Aug and published a care guide which I will link below. They say you can de-thatch St. Augustine but it should be done carefully. In my case, my only option was to remove the lawn (very thick) or try dethatching. AS you can imagine new sod is expensive and buying a $100 machine on AMZN was worth the try. When the machine arrived I removed every other tyne (comb) so it wouldn't be too aggressive on my lawn. Here were my steps you can duplicate; 1. Mow the lawn low. 2. Use the thatcher (remove every other tyne). Which is fine because now you will have replacement combs. They do break. 3. Mow or rake all the thatched out dead grass. 4. Use a strong leaf blower to blow out the remaining loose material. 5. Fertilize with Milorganite. 6. Water heavy once per week. This is another thing most people (including me) don't understand about St. Aug. You shouldn't be watering St.Aug frequently (ie multiple times a week) Water once per week heavily for deep water penetration. St. Aug needs to root deeply and deep watering helps it achieve this. 7. Do not mow for 2 weeks. Let the grass grow and recover. 8. Also, don't mow St. Aug low all the time. It really needs 2-3" long leafs to thrive. In my case, I was always mowing low. The first time I used mine two years ago, it pulled out nine lawn bags of cruft from my 5,000 sq ft lawn. It does wonders for letting water and nutrients get down into the soil. It’s an excellent bang for the buck purchase. SunJoe just put out a new version that’s 15” wide for folks with larger yards. I’d be happier if Ryobi started selling their cordless version again here in the US.

When you scarify a second time you should go diagonal with your first direction, you'll overlap with the old lines less and essentially get more coverage with the grass. I worked at a golf course and a sports complex and when we do heavy dethatching we just use the scarifier over and over going in different directions at a time, the most we've ever done at once is 8 times, You can keep going and going over you look back and see that your grass is very thin and almost dirt and that's when it's time to stop.

I bought the same dethatcher last year and it worked great so far in my lawn. I had a lot of Poa Annua last year and it helped remove most of that while dethatching the lawn. I got several wheelbarrows full of thatch last year and was amazed at how easy it worked. I've already used it twice this year, and my lawn is starting to look great. Prior to last year, I had never done anything like this, and had no idea how it helps your lawn. I'm going to use your idea of going in different directions as I only went in ONE. Also, I have not used the scarifier, so I plan to borrow your idea on that too. Your videos are tons better than mine, so good job with that. Thanks.

I have the same machine and LOVE it! I only dethatch, not scarify, but it quickly paid for itself. It’s extremely satisfying to have so much material come out, and even better a couple of weeks later when your lawn starts recovering. My neighbors still had yellow dormant lawns, while mine was looking green and lush. Four wild rabbits even hopped over from several houses away to check it out! 😂

I have one for a few years and works great. With a permanent marker I made marks on the body of unit to better tell where the blade ends are positioned for more accurate positioning.The unit pulls itself along. Lawn can look kind of raw afterwords but after some seed and growth its well worth the temporary raw look. Another thing the scarifier does is it helps to break up hard uneven spots on lawn smoothing and flattening the lawn. I bought the Sun Joe because the motor, based on amperage, seemed more powerful (durable) than other units I compared it to. I wouldn't be to concerned about doing it again in the fall if the lawn looks thick n healthy and in the spring perhaps only dethatch,scarifiying is very aggressive and is more for rehabing and not maintaining.

Great video and nice job. We have had the Irish equivalent version of home depot called Screwfix here and last year I got a detacher and scarifier that looks exactly like yours but a different brand. I got sick of hiring a petrol (gas) detacher scarifier each time for €70 ($84) so invested in an electric one for €70. Best purchase ever. I'll be honest with you there's no need to use the small rake cartridge I always use the scarifier cartridge with the longer metal bars. I find the scarifier cartridge takes a hell of a lot more out of the lawn and also creates divots and lines that nutrients and water can get into for the grass to grow strong. The only time I would use the rake cartridge is for if I had a lot of leaves during the fall to take out from between the blades of grass after rating the lawn. (We have a hell of a lot of trees here so gets bad) 😁 The only other step I would suggest is that in about 2 or 3 weeks to add fertilizer to your lawn to really get it boosted and green. Great job and greetings from us here in Ireland. Ps on a side note I'd love to know how your French drains are doing and if you had to do any maintenance since you installed them.

I need one of these machines because I used to use a dethatching blade on my lawn mower which worked great back when mower blade height was able to be set low enough to allow the dethatching blade's tines to touch the ground. Nowadays mower manufactures seem to make their mowers with lowest blade height seeting too high to allow a dethatching blade to do any good. When I did dethatch with my mower, I cleared the thatch with a gas blower and collected it and saved it to use a mulch top dressing applied after overseeding to retain surface moisture. Nothing like being practical with nothing going to waste and it eliminates disposal of usable material. Thanks.

Great video! I have the Greenworks dethatcher and used it on a small area of my lawn last year. Put new seed down and fresh bagged dirt with a manure mixture and my lawn looked really good after a 12-20 day period. Also watered the lawn after applying the dirt and seed every day for 5-10 minutes. Plan to do my whole lawn this spring. Thanks for posting.

My recommendation would be to always start as close to the power outlet as possible and work away from the outlet. It helps with cord management, and keeps the cord from getting in your way. That's what you did on at least the last pass with the scarifier, and I don't remember you having to move the power cord at all, unlike some of the other passes where you were moving the cord each time you turned.

I bought a SunJoe a couple of years ago. Then I had my lawn aerated, then over seeded. It made a huge difference! I've aerated many times with over seeding before, but after using the dethatcher, everything changes for the better.

This thing rocks I was not able to get to the yard soon enough in the spring, so I don’t have my results yet, but the amount of debris that came out of the yard was overwhelming and filled up two trash cans. The front yard I just did yesterday finally, and it filled up our trashcan as well. I learned on the front yard that doing it in one direction, and then going back and scarifying it the other way really got almost everything up off of the dirt. I have some bare spots which I believe are due to reflection off of the walls of our building and windows, along with water saturation, but also the ground being so compacted and needing a refresh with topsoil, but using this tool has made it quick to get all of the junk out from between the grass and I look forward to using the metal auger to aerate the soil mix in some seed with some topsoil cover with a tarp and who knows maybe in a month I’ll be able to patch up some of these bears, but but by next year the lawn should be looking really great . The previous homeowners just didn’t even give a damn and on top of that we have voles that have made tunnels everywhere so I finally driven them out of the yard but I’ve got to go back and fill everything in level everything off and doing that with two boys and dogs is kind of a chore. A lot of people say that the bag is too small it is but if you bring your receptacle to where you’re working after making two passes you pull it off you empty it you put it back on and you just get used to it at first I was mad that I would have to take the thing off so often, but then I realized this thing is saving me from raking my entire yard by hand, and it would take me many more hours to do that so I gladly got on board and started using the small turf catcher and I was done before I even knew it. It wasn’t nearly as bad as I thought it would be. Last thing I wanted to put in was, I took a piece of strapping and had it over the back, and I had drilled a hole and put a rivet into the main body of the machine, but I did not pull the rivet all the way out because that would go through the holes that were in this plastic strap and then I put another rivet on the other side of the flap that lifts up so when I’m not using the bag I can take the strap lift it up and slide the rivet stem into the hole of the strap so it holds up the shoot now of course I don’t have it opened up all the way but I have it opened up just enough so that it will come back and exit the machine and also not go flying into my shins but this helped me work through the yard to loosen everything up before putting on the basket to catch everything to dump it into the container.

Easiest thing to do is core aerate. 2 maybe even 3 times a year. Also seed when you do it. Also make sure you are buying good seed when you do it! High end golf course aerate 3+ times a year, but they don't detach ever.

I got to say, Sun Joe seems to make a decent product. I have one of their electric tillers. I've been impressed with its performance the last couple of years. Wet, dry, hard pack don't matter. Put in pavers for a patio area and used it to loosen the dirt, thigh thick roots everywhere buried deep, worked right through and just bounced off any roots it couldn't cut. Considering what my front lawn looks like, guess I know what my next Sun Joe toy is gonna be.

I just bought one of the Sun Joe products and the owners manual did not have a whole lot of what I needed to do to use this product for best results. I appreciate your video and mostly followed what you did on my lawn with great results. In 1 month I am able to see new growth filling in bare spots as well as having a lawn that is very comfortable and soft when walking on it bare footed. I just want to say thank you and thank you again. I'm in the UK, I bought a similar machine, tried it in a small area with the rake attachment and I felt it tore my grass (I don't know if I'm supposed to adjust the height), I got scared and never used it again....but I want to lol. I leave it all in there. That’s organic material that eventually feeds the plants. If you take it out you are going to need to rely on chemical fertilizers. I moved to the desert years ago and am so happy not to have to cut grass. What a colossal waste of resources. Cheers

I don’t know if you will get this info being you did this a yr ago. I have an acre of property and have a sun joe. Pretty 16:15 amazing little machine. One thing I would like to share is that thatch will get inside of the casing and there is a circuit board that will short out if the thatch gets wet. The symptoms are you will start up and in a few seconds it will stop. If you take the top cover off you will have access to the inner workings including the motor and circuit board. I use my compressor to blow out all the debris. One heads up when taking off the cover. There is one last screw under the decal. Could drive you nuts if you don’t know it’s there. Lawn looks great. You did a thorough job. Good luck going forward.

I need to do this. Moved into this house last fall. Previous owner did just enough to keep it looking decent. I've done what I can so far, but I do believe the thatch buildup is crowding out some of my good grass. I've finally got it weed and clover free, fertilize regularly, water as needed, mow high during the summer...still getting yellow patches. So we'll see if dethatching helps!

Excellent video. I have the same Sunjoe machine and love what it has done for my yard. HINT: Begin working closest to the electrical supply and work your way out. You won't have to deal with the cord as much!

Core Aerating 2 times a year will give you way more results

That lawn can breathe now for sure! The only suggestion would be a pre-m for your crabgrass. Scott’s makes a granular starter fert that you can seed with. Did you have a lot of crabgrass the previous year?

Wen using electric appliances outdoors us a circuit breaker that plugs into the wall. Great for use with any electrical appliance or tool, it will automatically cut out if there is a current leak to protect the user.

@@ThatTechTeacher427 I worked for trugreen and another lawn care company for over 15yr watering new seed is watering it enough to keep the soil moist. You did a great job the only thing I would have done differently would be to use the rake last you more then likely could pull more out if you did. You saved a lot of money a job like that would cost you 4 to 5 hundred dollars or more done right. Thank you for the video

I did this last week (with Greenworks brand) first time in 25 yrs for the lawn (never knew it was a thing that needed to be done). Did small sections like 10-12 rows, then raked the big stuff then mowed/bagged to vac up the rest. It was pulling up thatch like there was an endless supply. 18 lawn bags stuffed and out to the curb. If I had gone over it again in the other direction, I might have had 18 more bags. Thankless work. I think I’ll wait a while before I do that again.

Looking good! I see someone already commented on starting at the house, no matter the pattern you're cutting with electric machines. Grandpa had an electric mower 40 years ago and that's how we did it back then. That amount of grass will compost down to a crazy small amount of awesomeness. Think paper grocery sack sized amount. Do it over bare ground and you'll get the worms up in there too.

My front yard is about equal in size to yours. I picked up one of these because that thatch rake was a pain! I parked my John Deere 1025R compact tractor in the driveway and used the bagger. When the unit started to leave a trail, I shut it down, backed up about 6 feet, and emptied the bag into the tractors bucket. When the tractor bucket got full, I emptied it into my compost pile with some dry leaves. The amount I got, without the scarifiers was about equal to what you collected.
