I had the pleasure of performing with this band. It was a soul expanding experience and there are sheet music charts for all of this. There is tons of practice that goes into it and Sun RA wrote music almost constantly.

Are there parts like "rub a chair against guitar neck" and "throw your cymbal on the floor"? or is it "just go fucking nuts"?

This concert took place in East Berlin,Jazz-Buehne 1986, Friedrichstadt-Palast. Not West-Berlin. I was there. It was GREAT... They played in West-Berlin also at the time. But the footage shown is taped behind the WALL and it was a very special treat for us...

@@fredleber2432Most likely the images are in color but I don't know why black and white images were obtained in the transfer from analogue VHS to Digital even if it shouldn't be like this, perhaps whoever carried out the procedure was not able to do better or it was not equipped with suitable tools

I just love the guy playing the drum with those bent sticks, he seems to be so calm and unflappable while all the mayhem unfolds around him.

It's funny/not funny how most people don't get it. We need, absolutely NEED ritualized/neutralized violence, to break through to a more civilized world. Homo sapiens is a violent species. But with intelligence enough to create ritual spaces where violence can be expressed safely, and the full, mind-blowing paradoxes of living and dying can be explored and made into poetry. This is life. This is art.

I played with him and watching him was even more intense. He just had this way of playing the sax like it was a piano and he would roll his hand down the neck similar to what a pianist would do when they play one of those show biz glissandos it was intense and you know he had some s**t on his mind. It was a brilliant time for a young man.

Sun Ra and his Arkestra had a huge influence on my creative life. I must have caught them live a dozen times up on the East Coast, made many drawings and got to chat with the musicians. I even had the honor of accompanying Sun Ra through Venice, Italy back in 1986. The things he would talk about...

This was a live recording, which is a dichotomy. Fully half of a live musical experience is the energy created between musician and audience, musician and musician, instrument and air. We can't have that energy anymore this band only created it that night. The recording is like a photograph...looks like it but isn't it.

Tension-tension-tension-tension-tension-tension....and no release from the tension until the piece is over (although that is certainly debatable). The purpose of this music is to make you squirm in your chair a bit and the reason we do is because we are not used to seeing such raw passion. My defense for this music virginia223 is: 'Good' music can draw from us the strongest emotions and thoughts-hatred and discomfort being two of them.

There was a scene in David Lynch's movie "Lost Highway" where Bill Pullman is cast as a saxophone player, and there is a scene in the club where he sounds like this. Great stuff!

Remember when we as kids made instruments out of construction paper, tissue boxes, rubber bands, and gravel in kindergarten? Remember how we put on a little concert for our parents and it was actually pretty bad but they clapped anyways because 'aw, look at my boy playing 'hot cross buns' on the oatmeal can maraca. So cute!' That's this song here, but with grown-ass men. XD
