I salute you. You are an incredible instructor. I've only been studying Yang for about 2 and a half years. Your explanations are understandable, and I am able to practice along with you. Tying the Emperor's Coat is the signature form of Sun style, as Grasping the Bird's tail is to Yang style. As part of my practice routine, I have spent many hours practicing this form in isolation and as part of a Sun set. It is complicated, and I have to practice it regularly. Also, I practice it back to back with Grasping the Bird's tail. This is harder than it seems, as the forms are similar, yet the forces are applied differently. Tying the Emperor's Coat is basically a throat strike and a block or push. Yes, it is a deadly form. Like the Yang 24, the martial aspects of Sun style are very powerful. For me, the martial aspect gave Tai Chi an entirely new level of appreciation and helped improve my practice.

Ah. Makes sense why Sun style made the most immediate "sense" to me, because most of my irl training (outside practicimg with content online) has been bagua, xingyi and yiquan.

🔥 That's so great! Sun Lutang was a Xinyi master first so the linear power is a very strong element in Sun Style. And also why Yang Style practitioners have such a hard time with it.

The downside of making "immediate sense" to you is that you are more likely to miss the essence of Taichi as you rely on your understanding of the other internal arts. Maybe it would be better if you don't practice Sun style but learn Yang and Chen, then only get to Sun style as the ultimate form where all your styles come together. :P

@KelGhu I don't really have any illusions about attaining the "ultimate form" of anything, really.

It is interesting that Sun Lu Tang developed this style as Tai Chi already has Circular and straight line actions and steps so I wonder why? My conclusion is a desire to be famous like so many have. Thoughts?

Sun Lutang was already considered one of the best Chinese martial artists of the Republican Era even before he created Sun Style Tai Chi so I don't think it was for fame. I can only pass on what I've heard from others but I heard he was always fascinated with Tai Chi and had wanted to learn it but didn't get the opportunity to until later in life after he already mastered Xinyi and bagua. It does seem to be a perfect vehicle harmonizing the two so maybe he created it to be able to combine these two arts together?

@@AipingTaiChi As a practitioner of Wu style I offer my thoughts. Why make Yang when Chen exists? Why make Wu when Yang exists? Each style is unique, and each builds on the older styles. So why Sun when tai chi, Ba Gua and Hsing I exist? Well, Ba gua is from a Taoist stepping exercise, Tai Chi is related to Chi Kung, and Hsing I is related to the Chinese Elemental system. So Sun style simply brings together elements of three related martial arts, and I would guess Sun Lu Tang was trying to provide some of the the benefits of all three without needing three lifetimes to master them. Forgive my intrusion here. I'm on this page to see more Sun style, since it, along with Hsing I and Ba Gua are hard to find in my country. Thank you for this video.

I can't disagree with this statement. Sun Style isn't my primary style and I'm still exploring and digesting it. I studied a bit of bagua with Master Aiping but I didn't study Xingyi. My understanding of Xingyi is only through the lens of Sun Style Tai Chi. I have a lot of holes in this style that I am still exploring. I would evaluate my Sun Style movements to still be at the external level and not the internal level, good enough to win competitions but not good enough for deeper understanding. I have to say when I first learned it I didn't like Sun Style at all. But as I'm getting older and more familiar with it and deepening my understanding of internal, I have gained a profound appreciation for it and have made understanding it an important part of my own personal development.

0:43 coordinated 1:02 coordinated,, however those are coordination of moves. The moves presented by Shifu Shirley seem harmonious. It is evident by foot moves with hand,, hands move together, and body directs limbs that a statement claiming no coordination of body present is completely untrue.-Ernie Moore Jr. Even coordinated, all form is individual moves. All practice is individual moves,, all application is individual moves,, it is just connection of moves such as beginning a move while still finishing a move. Demonstrating a series of moves, It can be helpful for understanding what is what to distinguish one move from another.-Ernie Moore Jr.
