He called out Luffy and Goku because Goku and Dragon Ball as a whole is inspired from Journey to the West, where Sun Wukong came from, and Wukong's Japanese name IS Son Goku. And One Piece's creator is known to be a massive Dragon Ball fan, so it's not too farfetched to call Luffy inspired by Goku. And because Sun Wukong is immortal seven times over and is strong enough to rival Heaven itself, he's basically the most arrogant character in media.

Feel that you can draw a lot of parallels between Gear 5 and Wukong. "I can do anything I want" is very in-character for the Monkey King. And yes, as you said, original Dragon Ball literally IS the Journey to the West.

I think the beat sounds more Asian in nature because Sun Wukoug is a Chinese god. Sometimes people need to take inspiration from other cultures to make more unique music. 🥰❤❤

Something we gotta work for it's something that we gotta earn Wukong apprenticed under a Taoist immortal, fought gods and their armies, got slapped down by the only being that could (the Buddha) and took his time under that mountain a bit poorly. But when he got out, he focused on figuring out how he could be more like the one who overcame him, and eventually became a Buddha in his own right. Like, he's OP and heroic largely because he kept challenging himself, no matter how badly things went (not just physically or mentally, but spiritually). There's a reason that the good stuff about shonen manga and anime is in it, and it's this guy.

Won't even go into the fact that he's a perfect example of the absurd hero Albert Camus would codify centuries later; no conventional morality (his own kind and plenty of it, but none of the expected stuff, thanks), doesn't respect the gods (peed on the Buddha's hand, even), despises death (crossing out his name and the names of his people from the rosters of the land of the dead, becoming immortal not once but seven times as either a joke or spite), and a love of fun, food and finery (including a love of fighting). The biggest distinction is that there's no fatalism in Wukong's story, no 'the gods have their due'. There's just 'sooner or later Wukong will get where he's going because, now the Buddha has decided he's cool, who's gonna f*king stop him, Michael McDoesn'tExist?'

Re: the Lao Tzu lines - At the beginning of Journey to the West, Sun Wukong gets drunk AF on heavenly wine at a party for the the gods (which he snuck into uninvited) and stumbled into Lao Tzu's alchemy lab and stole some of his pills of immortality. Later on when the entire heavenly host is done with his sh*t, they realize they can't execute him because the wine made him immortal, and the peaches he tended (and ate without permission) made him extra immortal, and his enlightened teachings made him super-immortal, and Lao Tzu's pills made him ultra-immortal so that even putting him in Lao Tzu's alchemy cauldron for 49 days couldn't undo all his immortality. Needless to say, Sun Wukong is on a first name basis with a lot of deities and gods and prophets for all the wrong reasons 😂 (Edit: Lao Tzu wrote the foundational teachings of Taoism which is where Sun Wukong gained his Lvl 1 immortality, and trying to cook it out of him in the cauldron made him Lvl 5 immortal. His plot armor is seven immortal layers thick somehow)

Lao Tzu is the romanized version of Laozi, another ancient Chinese philosopher. I believe he’s primarily known for a series of writings that are the foundation for early Taoism.

Primarily known for the Tao Te Ching which, as you said, is one of the foundational texts for Taoism. Additionally, the Journey to the West heavily features Taoist spiritual themes (as well as themes from Buddhism, Chinese Folk Religions, Confucianism, and traditional Chinese mythology), which is probably why Lao Tzu is mentioned.

The reason Goku and Luffy were mentioned is because both of them are characters based on Son Wukong, its actually hinted in their names. Son Goku (When he was a kid he also had the tail so it was more clear), And "Monkey" D. Luffy who with recent news is the god of the "Sun".

Goku and Luffy are basically just bootleg Sun Wukong (as in, directly inspired by him - the Japanese reading of the characters that make up the name Sun Wukong even _is_ Son Goku), so yeah, the og can take 'em. 😌 General rule of thumb for this guy: If you even have to ask "Can Sun Wukong do [...]", then the answer is "yes". The answer will always be yes. There's basically nothing he can't do if he puts his mind to it, he's delightfully overpowered. It's so much fun!

Wukong did poetry rap hype intro a BUNCH in the original Journey to the West. There are no joke. Wukong would 1000% approve of this song. Same with the fact that "roots in the dirt" bit. He was treated horribly by the gods since he hatched from a stone. Wukong might not have been a headache, but he made friend easy with his charm and fantastic sense of humor. He studied and worked incredibly hard for everything. His biggest problems were because heaven kept insulting him and treating him like garbage. Most his errors were custom stuff and manners no one was willing to correct him on until he went too far when he was rejected for a peach festival and decided to do 8 different really bad things at the same time. Prompting him to abandone heaven, be forced to fight. Dragged to heaven to be slow cooked alive for 49 days in smoke and fire. Permanently disfiguring him, and only THEN does he snap and get scary angry enough to become a try and take over heaven. Buddha beats him in a wager which Wukong then respects because anyone who can pull one over on him fair and square erns his respect. 500 years later after hes freed by a buddhist monk he must escorts east does so semi- voluntary. Yes he has the tightening crown on, but if Wukong didn't want to go, Tripitaka and Buddha would let him bail. Thing is, Wukong as a character wants to feel fulfilled and be a person worthy of love and respect. Hes ALWAYS wanted that. But adoration from others isn't enough, it will never be enough. Hes dedication to go West and achieve buddha hood is a beautiful story because of how genuinely character driven it is and allegory for how unstoppable and whim driven an undisciplined human mind is. Wukong makes several poems about how Master Tripitaka is his dad and the narrator brings up that everyone was to afraid to ever talk down to him like a child. "Once a teacher, always a father" being one of my favorite lines from the book. I love Journey to the West, its genuinely a beautiful and halarious book of philosophy and religious and political satire. And it now makes watching anime impossible because whole tropes were pulled from this book. Like everything from the pokemon Gym bages in og pokemon - the anime hotspring fan service episode with a pervert getting their ass kicked by the girls they were creeping in. Fights lasting to long and hiroic declorations and intermissions. 10-10 would recomend. (Something something algorithm but i wanted to say something worthwhile.)

The reason he mentioned goku and luffy is cause they are both inspired by sun wukong goku most of all luffy mainly just gets certain personality aspects and there’s probably other stuff but I haven’t watched enough one piece to say his name is monkey d luffy tho so that probably is part of it goku tho well to start off his name son goku is very similar to sun wukong also the cloud nimbus is something sun wukong uses also goku’s power pole is a direct reference to his staff wukongs staff can also extend and shrink as he pleases but wukong’s is better cause it can change thickness as well as length also him being inspired by wukong is why he originally had a tail toriyama had never planned saiyans in the original the ozaru and monkey tail goku had were originally all mainly there cause of sun wukong also shenron’s design is based off the dragon of the west I believe only real difference being colour I think but I’m not sure also another anime with a wukong reference Naruto his shadow clones are a reference to wukongs clones he makes him by pulling out some hairs and blowing on them when there defeated they also disappear in a puff of smoke same as Naruto’s
