The biggest blow was watching as Yuan basically TRASHED everything. China under Sun could have seen a unified, successful nation built with strong ties to its people. Yuan denied that to his people and the modern world because of his own greed and ambition. Because of him, China would yet again dissolve into chaos and in itself breed the radical, authoritarian PROC. A civil war that would destroy so many lives and cause untold suffering to all it's peoples, and a mass suppression of civil liberties not unlike the Quing before them.

Song Jiaoren is one of the most underrated revolutionaries in Modern Chinese History. While Sun was the diplomat, Huang Xing the military man, it was Song who was the organizer of the Revolution. Most of the soldiers who revolted in Wuchang actually admired Song more than Sun, and this is why he was chosen by the Kuomintang over Sun to lead them against Yuan. If he was not gunned down by Yuan on that fateful day at such a young age, it is probably he who would remember as the founder of the Republic and there is a good chance he maybe able to hold China together which would spare the nation a lot of bloodsheds. For anyone who is interested in learning more about the Revolution and Song's life. I would recommend them looking up the following book: Struggle for democracy: Sung Chiao-jen and the 1911 Chinese Revolution (1971) published by ANU.

Well, Yuan did not accept all of the 21 Demands. The demands could be divided into five groups: Group 1: Japan replaces Germany's sphere of influence in Shandong. Group 2: gave Japan a sphere of influence in Manchuria and eastern Inner Mongolia. Group 3: gave Japan control of the Hanyeping mining complex Group 4: China no longer gave concessions to other powers. Group 5: Japan gains control of Chinese finance, police, railways, Buddhist temples and schools, and Fujian, opposite of Taiwan. Group 5 was the one that made Japan the protectorate. The other four were literally repeats of what China already did. The Chinese government reached out to Western powers like Britain and the US, and played them against Japan. In the end China and Japan agreed to all the demands except Group 5. Even so, Shandong was given back to China in 1922 after a lot of protests, Zhang Xueliang turned Manchuria over to China in 1928, not sure about Group 3's fate, but eventually the Hanyeping complex was returned to China, and Group 4 there was no problem following.

It was a shame that Sun Yat-sen did not become china's first president he was very capable leader with the right ideas and people who had all the capabilities to make them real china would have become a much different place if not for him none of Mao's atrocities none of the Housing and Pollution crises and no feudal government

Short stories short: He died shortly after the war, the country still in tatters, every warlord gearing up for Civil War 2: Even More Fire. And then Japanese invade Manchuria then by pretext invade China during WW2 and everything basically goes dumpster fire until Chairman Mao consolidates his power and quench the fire.

@@justinbowers2749 Kinda similar to Germany in a way isn't it? The Treaty of Versailles put a democracy in Germany which was alien to the people who wanted a rule of one strong man Also, there's in interesting theory about the effect of the Mongol Empire on democracy in Eurasia. If u draw the Mongol 1276 borders, almost every country inside it is autocracy or absolute dictatorship.

Eh, I don't know, he hit a lot of bumps in the road for sure (prisoner in his own palace, puppet of the Japanese, tried for war crimes, put in prison to be "rieducated"), but in the end he turned out pretty well. He ended up working as a gardener, with a wife that by all accounts loved him, lived to old age and died peacefully. Considering that, at one point or another, all factions (Yuan, the Kuomimtang, the Communists, the Japanese, a number of Warlords) had some reason to want him dead, I'd say he was quite lucky. Many had it infinitely worse in China at that time.

One small issue, and that is that the previous Emperor wasn't Puyi's father. His dad, Prince Kung, lived 'till the 50s and actually remained a respected figure to his death.

To be honest, there were conspiracies revolving around the assassination of Song, people closest to him actually suspected Sun to be behind the murder, as an attempt to regain influence in the parliament. This series also didn’t mention another important figure, Huang Xin, the real field leader of the revolutionists, who opposes Sun’s idea to use military power (again) against Yun, he said that it would throw China into chaos and it did.
