He was popular, the kingdom was getting back on his feet thanks to spanish and italian trade, his father's policy had forced the english to withdraw and he even won a great victory at Roosebeke against the flemish. And then he was struck down from inside. Thanks for talking more in-depth about this, most people just say "he get mad, yo" and leave it at that.

I'm kinda surprised they didn't mention the infamous Ball of the Burning Men. Basically, in 1393, Queen Isabeau held a masquerade ball to celebrate the third marriage of her maid of honor. Charles and some of his associates decided to make light of this by dressing up as wild men. But then Louis lifted a small torch to try and find out which one was the king, sparks flew, and soon all the men were on fire…literally. Understandably, Isabeau fainted. But Charles's life was saved by his aunt, the Duchess of Berry, who threw the train of her dress around him and pulled him aside from the chaos. To add even more dark humor, one of the men jumped into a vat of wine. But I think he died along with the others. Needless to say, Louis did not come outta this situation looking good.

Foster parent is the usual terminology for having legal custody but not full legal parental rights. Maybe it's regional but in Australia there's definitely a clear distinction in everyday language between parents you acquire through your own marriage (in-laws) and parents you acquire through your parents marriage (step mother/father) I've never encountered a native English speaker who gets the terms confused.

@@ElizabethJones-pv3sj your right maybe it's just where I'm from but in addition to it's usual meaning we use the term step-parent when we talk about people who are closer to a child than the term "foster parent" normally implies (it has a rather negative connotation here- think people who go into it just for the paycheck) but without having any legal relationship with the child whatsoever or where there is a real parent still in the picture with limited visitation/ rights

How was Henry V a foreign occupier? He was a French nobleman, with sizable landholdings in France, who also happened to hold the Kingdom of England.
@numbersandletters0i6085 жыл бұрын
He was viewed as foreign, and that was enough for the French.
@Usammityduzntafraidofanythin5 жыл бұрын
He was from a different dynasty, that's why. Him being 'foreign' is a modern nationalist retcon to the story. Yes, it's probably false to say that the french people even thought of him as foreign; the reason the french ploughman hated the burgudnian or englishman, was because his liege lord said "I will kill if you/exile you, if you don't fight against them." and also that feudalism kept people attached to their lands. The reason historians don't affirm that though, even though it makes little sense not to, is that there's no direct evidence for a nobleman saying "I will kill you if you don't" with regards to the french, burgundians and english in that time period; despite them confirming that it is common throughout other periods of the middle ages, and being common in feudalism to exile or kill or punish a serf for breaking their contractual serfdom. France was also largely more agricultural, so it's probable that there was a greater percentage of serfs than in england (serfs couldn't move around; whereas free peasants could, and needed to due to sheep herding. Free peasants rented, whereas serfs were bound in permanent contracts). Thing is, it would have been hard to tell nationalists that the whole reason for the war was because one group of monarchs hated another group of monarchs (which Henry was the head of; in Henry's case, the Plantagenets); it would've ruined the mythology that was necessary for them to possess 'national pride' or have a national enemy to hate, such as england. This may be because there's nothing like hatred to unite a people, and england was a useful object for the french republics (yes, there has been as many as 5 of those). Even though nationalism could arise out of something else like language or culture and sovereign borders, it apparently wasn't enough for france in the 19th century. Hence, the old nationalism often going with militarism, etc.

@@darknephilim3248 Not so much "more accepting" of an ideology, as "less repulsed" by the symbol, or "less sensitive" to its significance in reality. It's the only reason there's still controversy over what the Confederate flag means today - people just got used to flying it, so they're not receptive to the idea that it could actually represent slavery. Also consider the skull - represents death or danger, so it's used to warn of poisonous substances. Problem is, pirates have been stealing it for the last few centuries, and many recent depictions of pirates are more cartoony or silly than dangerous, so, the skull's ability to represent danger decreases. Heck, Intel sells SSDs with skull emblems, and the "Mr Yuk" symbol was designed to replace the skull as a symbol of poison, with questionable effectiveness. Getting used to a symbol isn't going to make you a white supremacist - that would take something else entirely. But it actually means something to fly, wear, or use that symbol, even in digital form.

Important thing to remember about Henry V. While he was no doubt a brilliant military commander. He would NEVER have been able to conquer France, if it hadn't been for the fact that France not only was already in the middle of a civil war. And that France was also ruled by one of the most incompetent royal couples in human history.
