“Everyone forgets that Icarus also flew. But anything worth doing is worth doing badly. I believe Icarus was not failing as he fell, but just coming to the end of his triumph.” Lines from Failing and flying by Jack gilbert. In the end we cant avoid failing so why not fail trying something worth trying? Poetry is certainly that :)

Poetry is instinct and I just started to write not out of any desire to be a poet, but because it was a distilled expression that was so satisfying. I love direct-ness. I find intellectual, overeducated, poets to be stale and boring because they are just that---intellectual and planned. Yes. Genuine and authentic is essential. Too much advice though is forcing the intellect to take over. Each poet is special and should be confident, I think.

I like the idea when poem rhymes, it makes it more flavorsome, very attractive. Writing a poem without rhymes is just like writing a paragraph with sentences. Everyone has a different taste so I guess if someone doesn’t feel comfortable with rhyme then they shouldn’t let theirs rhyme but for those who love rhyme well go ahead and do that...be you! Express your talent they way you want it to be. It’s just one video here and that’s just her opinion. Don’t let it form the basis of your poetry...write from your heart! There’s nothing wrong with looking up words too, that’s why you have a thesaurus. It will help to expand your vocabulary. When you expand your vocab, then maybe one day you won’t have need for that. Just ensure you are using the words in the right context.

In my opinion it makes it disingenuous, like you're trying to fake something.
@arsangelica6858
@arsangelica6858 Жыл бұрын
It’s not disingenuous. It may sound stupid if you’re not very good at it. But pattern and rhythm are a large part of the pleasure in poetry. It ought to have something. If not rhyme, then regular alteration such as in Anglo Saxon poetry, or some other repeating element. If it has none of that it should at least have enough meter to give it legs when you read it out loud. Poetry was always a specialized form. Making it more and more like prose threatens to collapse the meaning. You can invent half-shades, but don’t make the original into snobby, weirdly arranged prose.

Absolutely right. The only thing I really always do though is write in rhyme. It's just the way I hear it in my head. Don't get me wrong, I love prose, but 99.9% of the time I write in rhyme, because that's what really does it for me. Perhaps it's due to the heavy musical influences of my upbringing. Perhaps I'm trying to write songs without music. I don't know, it makes me smile though. Love the video, great advice.❤

I am a young poet and am working on a poetry book at the moment and some of these tips really helped! Especially the one about use of “old” vocabulary, because I always tend to use it even though I may not be sure what it means. This is because English is not my native language and I’d like to come off as someone who has good vocabulary. But i never realised it can actually do the exact opposite if it doesn’t fit or make sense so thank you!

I’m extremely multi-versed in the way I write, and I owe that to letting go of the rules. I find that when I’m not trying to rhyme it happens effortlessly. It only comes when I really have something to say though. I write in very vast metaphors and sometimes my poems are just a very colorful expression of words. Because of the way I write, I don’t have a set style. I feel I can be WAY more creative in that way. I can’t wait to publish my first book! I’ve been working on my art for years❤️

no contemporary poet thinks they have to rhyme, in fact, the opposite is true. i've seen more recent poems reject rhyme and rhythm for free-verse. i like to rhyme my poems, it's just how i am but whenever i submit them to contests, they always do poorly compared to all the free-verse poems. even though many great writers used rhyme, somehow the newer generations turn their noses up at it and see it as childish. which is ridiculous and pretentious.
@KayeSpivey
@KayeSpivey Жыл бұрын
Because rhyme has been done so much and there are a limited number of words which are true rhymes for each other in English, you have to get really clever to come up with rhymes that are surprising or clever or don't just sound like children's sing along songs. When rhyme is done well, people are enthralled. Great, surprising rhymes are undeniable and delightful to read, but the English language is better equipped to incredible storytelling and musicality through internal rhythm and structure, so many poems thrive there instead. A rhyme that is too on-the-nose or predictable is going to fall flat in comparison. If you love rhyme and playing with internal rhymes that's great and more power to you, but rhymes are difficult and so often done in a way that detracts rather than lends to the poem, which is a shame.
@right2lj

I have found the same with my poems when I go to Poetry Slams. The people who write with a rhyme scheme always get the lowest scores. Or maybe my poems just suck. But I have found that annoying because you work extra hard to have to sculpt a rhyming poem, like a piece of art. And free verse, while it can be extremely good, I've found that the same themes, subjects or topics are written about over and over.

I am here because the next step of songwriting for me is to produce some lyrics as well. And I gotta say a lot of this is very familiar from being a musician. I saw one thing that limits people is sticking to a style/template they know. Curiosity is the thing that will pull you out from one style and experimentation, that will lead to new stuff. How big is your palette is defined by your familiarity with other artists and theory and what decides if an idea is worth pursuing is your taste. A mistake that is also common among poets and musicians is trying to be "unique" or "modern" instead of producing results based on a good taste.

I agree with using words you know their meaning of and not obscure lofty words that don't make sense of what you're trying to convey, but there is nothing wrong with using a thesaurus to find an alternative word especially to prevent repetition or expand your usage of words. Using a thesaurus isn't the problem... what I've written and whether it makes sense is all that matters.

I don't think using old or lofty diction has any negative effect on your writing as far as you do it correctly. Obviously if you do it to sound cool, it's gonna sound shit. But if you do it properly and for a good reason, it will surely elevate your poetic skills.

I use rhyme because I enjoy it. It's like meshing together pieces of broken glass to reveal the face of something that did not exist before. I don't really care if people like it or not and I think that's an attitude that's unfortunately lost on more writers than not - call me chaotic neutral, I hope it amuses one person just as much as it annoys the absolute hell out of another.
@bigdog4166

I completely agree with this When I read a poem I want to read something that has deep meaning and rhymes nowadays you mind of just have people putting together sentences and indenting then saying it's poetry lol
@Chris-cf2kp
@Chris-cf2kp Жыл бұрын
@@bigdog4166 Yeah, I agree. It might be a generalization but I don't find modern poetry to have interesting character or narrative value. They read as haikus without the sentence structure or anecdotes that don't have any outcome or events. At least in the poetry I've seen to become popular and printed in small books, like that of some instagram poets within several years back.
@bigdog4166
@bigdog4166 Жыл бұрын
@@Chris-cf2kp Definitely. It probably makes it easier to be a poet than ever before since you don't really need to create anything with substance or impact. Another thing I have noticed especially in submitting work is the really unknowingly racist terms of submission such as blacks or people of color and natives get free submits while everyone else has to pay a fee. Textbook racism under the idea that it's correcting previous racism against those groups You don't solve racism with more racism
@Chris-cf2kp
@Chris-cf2kp Жыл бұрын
@@bigdog4166 I haven't noticed that yet myself in my experience submitting but that's definitely wrong. Those curations aren't worth submitting to if that's the case, so they're doing unbiased writers a favor. Something else I've noticed is that people take previous poems and rephrase them so that the original idea is nested into a different context or amidst changed characters. For example I saw Bukowski's "Death will tremble to take us" rephrased and nested within different characters on instagram and they were claiming it as their own while it had many oblivious people saying it's the greatest poem they've ever read and so original. You can only sigh in disappointment at it's tragedy or rue in the comical nature of it, lol.

Love number one's first mistake: "cloying"--love it! And even the 2nd one about using big words. I used to publish a magazine for new writers (Beginnings Publishing, Inc., 501 3 (c) 1999-2007) and one of the quotes I put in the magazine (I LOVE quotes) was Mark Twain, "Why use a million dollar word when a ten cent one will do? Words such as "metropolis" vs "city" This Mark Twain quote memory is off the top of my head so if I'm wrong but the mistake isn't taking away from the point of the quote, don't let me know! haha Do poets still write "oft" and "thou"? Overall, I think you are spot-on with your list of writer's 7 great mistakes. I'm a fiction writer although I do write poetry. HOWEVER, not sure how good they are. In defense though, I never send my poetry out--just every now and again so it's my fault. But i know i need to be in a group where I can be critiqued. (got one poem published) but I'm doing the comparison thing, (comparing my shoddy poems with others--hahah) But I know I can write better. As with most writers, we teach ourselves how to write thru trial and error, by finding other writers (absolutely NO family members!) hahah and we READ, READ, and READ! Another great point from Kaye is when she suggested NOT to read the same poets all the time! One always needs to go outside their comfort zone and boy did I learn through doing that. Sometimes it takes a few hard knocks to make the point come across in our favor. Now that I have some extra time on my hands I would like to write poetry....BETTER than I have been.

True I felt like this was kinda critical. Sometimes poems use rythm, sometimes they use big words, etc I dont think that's a bad thing everyone has a style and they all have there place in the poetry world. Also assuming people are thinking they are genius or horrible at poetry is such a assumption sometimes people are just writing to write and it comes out in poetry.

The younger you start, the better. I remember talking to a man who I thought (I was 17 )was an excellent writer. He was an English and Creative Writing teacher who eventually did give me good advice. He told me--after reading some of my stories-- that while the stories were ok, the more experience I acquire growing up and pushing through life's lessons like everyone else, fighting and grieving through trauma, problems, first love and their disastrous love story endings, the better writer you'll become. It's NOT to say to not to write now. Write as much as you can even when you don't want to. ESPECIALLY when you don't want to. Hone your craft, write every day and try to see the world in a different way--perhaps just simply YOUR way and make sure you read, read, read!! If you're a writer, you NEED to write (that is how I feel, anyway) but writing is an adventure. Decide if you want to write for publication or simply for yourself. Makes a big difference! Good luck to you!

Yes, of course art --all of art--is subjective. This is why we should never take someone's opinion of our writing to heart. As long as it's written well and you think you've expressed yourself the way you wanted, then hey! you wrote a damn poem and it's good and who cares what or when anyone's negative opinion decides to erupt? KEEP WRITING!

I believe that like with all art forms there are techniques and conventions to poetry as well and learning them allows you to break them in a way that better conveys the message you're actually striving to convey. Meaning is free, but when you're trying to express yourself to another person, the way you do so will greatly impact their understanding and interpretation, for better or worse.

In the world of verse, where muses sing, New poets dance and take their wing. Yet seven errors often appear, As they embark on this journey dear. First, in their eagerness to portray, They mimic styles in a disarray. Originality, the first mistake in hand, Embrace your voice, let it expand. Secondly, a rush to make it rhyme, Forcing words in a measured time. Let rhythm flow, let the heart engage, Forced rhymes confine the poet's stage. The third misstep, a rambling spree, In endless lines without a key. Precision in words, let meaning shine, Clarity helps your verses entwine. Then comes the trap of themes too vast, A web of thoughts that's overcast. Focus your lens on a single hue, Depth emerges from the concise and true. Next, a torrent of words that spill, With no regard, no thoughtful skill. Edit, refine, let your verse condense, Economy sharpens its eloquence. Fifthly, the trap of grandiose, Where simplicity finds repose. Embrace the mundane, the simplest of things, For beauty resides in the smallest springs. Then, there's the fear of being heard, Silencing the poet's every word. Let courage guide, share your voice, For it's in the vulnerability that we rejoice. Lastly, the error of haste's embrace, An impetuous rush, a frantic race. Patience, young poet, let your words mature, Craft them with care, let them endure. So heed these lessons, let them in, For a poet's journey is to begin. Embrace your voice, let the mistakes refine, For in their learning, your verses will shine.

To be the "best poet that ever lived" is something the best poets that ever lived didn't expect to be called in their own lifetimes. That happens when your work is timeless and transcends your own lifetime, and even then, it's very unlikely all but a small group of ardent followers will believe that, just like we see with the likes of Dickinson, Blake, Kipling, Homer, and so on.

Does it count as shock value if its using cannibalism as a metaphor for love. Without the intent of shocking anyone

If your intent is to craft a metaphor and not to simply shock and disgust a reader, then it likely does not count as shock value. :)

I don't know why anyone would get mad at this. It's all pretty common sense. I mean, I was waiting for that moment where I was like, "No! You shot me through the heart!" But even when she got close, I understood the sense of what she said, and couldn't but agree.

For me to write good poetry in rhyme takes more skill then to write in free verse. Because the rhyme makes you be more creative with the words. Of course there are great poets who wrote in free verse masterfully (Ana Blandiana, Khalil Gibran, Nichita Stănescu...). For me insta poetry is not poetry. You said some good advices. You need to practice a lot to be better at your craft. A lot I say. To read the classics is also a good advice. William Shakespeare, Mihai Eminescu, John Clare, George Bacovia, Walt Whitman, Pablo Neruda, Du Fu, Li Bai, R. Tagore, Rumi, Hafez, Homer, Virgil, Dante, Yun Dong-ju, Milton, Pushkin, Essenin, Blok, Unguretti, Leopardi, Virginia Wolf, Basho, Baudelaire, Maria Țvetaeva ... There is a world out there. Great poets and poetesses. And there are also difrent types of poetry. That takes a difrent approach to it. Like haiku for example. Study the art of poetry and it's greatest masters and your feet will recognise the road.

I have another video that might help answer that, kzbin.info/www/bejne/oJymgnV4fM1_nM0 although the short answer is collections are definitely more appealing to read if they have a cohesive theme or story arc, but it doesn't have to. It can be however you want it to be.

No offence, I'm just trying to understand, cause I started writing a few months ago so.. but do you think poems that singsong are not good. Actually the better question would be what do you mean when you say singsong(y) poems.
@KayeSpivey
@KayeSpivey 4 жыл бұрын
I would say if you are choosing to write a poem that sounds like it's bouncing when you read it aloud due to a hard rhyme scheme at the end of each and every line, know that it is going to sound like it was written for children and make sure that's intentional. For me that can be a huge turn off, especially if the poem seems to intend to be serious but the writer felt they had to do a hard rhyme at the end of each line and it comes across sing-songy. If you're writing in the English language and you want to rhyme you will have to find creative ways to do it such as slant rhyme or tucking the rhyme within lines or using assonance. There are languages that rhyme beautifully with little effort due to vowels typically falling at the end of words, but that's not the case for English.

@@KayeSpivey I'm going to have to respectfully disagree on this point. Things change, new influences get introduced, and I submit that hip-hop, in particular, has really changed the ear's tolerance for what often (used to?) get dismissed as "sing-song." I don't write hip-hop but I've had some success writing and publishing villanelles in trochaic pentameter catalectic, which possibly risks sing-song more than any other meter. Now, of course, even I got bored with that, and have started staggering line lengths, throwing in the odd dactyl or spondee, etc.

I agree with you heartily about the others, especially the archaic language and shock value critiques. I've been pacing the floor thinking how to tell a friend, "Hey, I know you. You're not suicidal. PLEASE stop writing about how you want to die just because it shocks people."
