Domimique and John De Menil moved from Paris when war broke out and settled in Houston. She was a Schlumberger and he was an executive in her family's oil exploration company. The family remained in Houston, contributing to the city's artistic and social progress During the great Met show, Houston's small and exquisite Menil staged a small and exquisite Charles James show. His couture suited the fiercely intellectual Dominique. The couple hired Philip Johnsom to design a house and hired Charles James to decorate it. Johnson was miffed by the curved banquettes and bright colors added to some walls.. He got over it The house is not open to the public but Menil members occasionally get a glimpse
