In 2020, Tacugama teamed up with the Dutch Sunday Foundation to build a secondary school in Mansonia, a village on the buffer zone of the Loma Mountains National Park and the region that’s home to the most concentrated population of wild chimpanzees in the country.
In rural Sierra Leone, access to education is not guaranteed as not all villages have schools and covering transport fees is not attainable for most. Children sometimes have to walk for many miles and hours to neighbouring villages to attend classes. This was the case for children in Mansonia village before the Sunday Foundation School was built.
We called the building The Jane Goodall Building, to honor the world-famous primatologist and close friend of Tacugama @JaneGoodall , who played a significant role in the founding of Tacugama.
Now the Sunday Foundation school provides daily classes to 121 kids in Mansonia with 6 teachers, who are also a part of a Roots & Shoots nature club. Since 2007, The Sunday Foundation has built 42 schools in marginalized communities around Sierra Leone. Now Tacugama is partnering with Sunday Foundation once again to build 2 more schools in the near future in 2 other communities around Loma Mountains National Park.
