He didn't do anything for the homeowner other than charge him a service fee. Minimal troubleshooting if you want to call removing cover off and bend over to see if pilot light is on. This guy is lazy and near worthless.

@@renenunez1254 - There's probably some things that we didn't see. Perhaps the homeowner opted to replace it tomorrow instead of today. You never really know. I'm not going to ding Mikey Pipes because he's who I would hire in a New York minute if I were in his service area and had a problem that needed to be fixed.

Pull the anode rod and synch the deal. See this stub is supposed to be a rod that goes all the way down in the tank protecting it from corrosion.

One challenge is finding newer good water heaters. I have one from home depot, as well that uses one of those honeywell controllers (the type with built in push button starter, and blinking LED to show normal operation. The tank is in good condition, (examined the vent as well as a few spots of the inner walls via a snake cam (vent also has proper airflow into the chimney), but every few months, the pilot light goes out, and it needs to be lit again, then it will work perfectly fine for another few months. Crazy thing is it started doing that a few months after the 6 year warranty ended, though the unit is now, The tank is now around 15 years old. Only issue is when it is time to replace the tank, it is going to be hard finding which models will be good. The previous water heater used a more old fashion design, lasted over 20 years when the previous home owners put it in, and the pilot light never went out (even when it really should have as the tank started leaking while the pilot remained lit and the thermostat remained functional).

I love my tankless hot water heater. Not that I care so much on saving money on gas or spending more on tankless, for me it’s the space it uses and looks a whole lot nicer.

Only downside is there is Suggested Required Maintenance on a Tankless or else. Not all HVAC Contractors make you aware of that. 👍

No repairs on tank more than 8 years old. Average tank life is 8 to 12 years

One issue with tankless, is with high efficiency washing machines, that constantly cycle the hot water on a & off causing the tankless to short cycle. Not only does it prevent sufficient hot water to the washing machine, but also will shorten the life of the tankless heater. My recommendation is a tankless with a small resevoir tank or a small tank water heater coupled with the tankless (more expensive option). I suspect do to gov't regulations all of the washing machines & dishwashers will be required to use high efficiency mode ( which probably isn't much more efficient: ie picking up pennys in a busy road). You can try to add a small tank to a tankless but its a pain to get it set up with a thermostat on the tank & get it working efficiency & not short cycling the tankless. I hope this helps out the professionals & DIY'ers

yeah, the clowns at the helm never think things through. like pure EV's, solar and wind. majority of it causes more pollution to produce, maintain and recycle than what it saves in fossil fuels to start with. but heaven forbid you point that out.

Why wasn't the burner operating? 15 years for a direct fired unvented cylinder with maybe failed gas valve would not be sound enough criteria to recommend total replacement as best option here in the UK!

Issue is the cost of the valve & replacement costs, I would guess it probably around $400 to $500 for parts & labor. Also older tanks fill up with scale since no one bothers to flush them, resulting in efficiency losses as the scale acts as insulator & most of the heat goes up the flue.

Going out on a Sunday "respects" I have a question. Did the TP valve drop tube look too short? shouldn't it be maximum 1/2 foot off the ground. It looked a little too high to me.
