For being the marquee time slot for games, Sunday Night Football isn't getting any good games. Jets vs. Raiders. Broncos vs. Vikings. Bears vs. Chargers. How do we get better games on Sunday Night Football via flex scheduling without impacting the other networks (CBS and FOX) in a negative way? There might be a solution.
EDIT: Welp, I made a mistake later in the video with Prohibition by accidentally calling it the Nineteenth instead of the Eighteenth Amendment

I think that starting with week 5, just like they do in college football, the NFL should not set times for Sunday games until 12 days before. The network that does the doubleheader that week gets to protect one game.

I think the issue is there are too many primetime games. Too many hands in the cookie jar. ESPN and Amazon games can’t be flexed so those should be good matchups even though we do get bad ones. Fox and CBS protect their good games, leaving scraps for NBC. Also injuries suck in terms of scheduling. In theory the jets were going to be a dream team but are not.
@americangiant1003
@americangiant1003 9 ай бұрын
I don't about the 2023/'24 Jets being a "Dream Team". 😂 If you mean pre season, Gang Green and Aaron Rogers getting the most media is probably what you mean. Also I think with Thursday Night games now being the entire season, it also lessen the available selections for NBC and soon also ESPN/ABC for SNF and MNF games. So in this new TV contract lasting for the next 10 years or so (end of the 2033-'34 season), no doubt CBS and Fox are the big winners here for the next decade or so.

There's another major issue. I've heard that there are new rules that CBS and FOX get one of every Divisional match-up in their respective conference. For example Giants vs Cowboys must be on Fox once a year and that applies to every Divisional game. This means SNF can't flex as many games like Steelers vs Browns because their first game was on MNF that means their second game must be on CBS.
@HowardSalwasser

The thing with the SNF's week 8 matchup between the Bears vs the Chargers is that the Bears didn't deserve to play on SNF when the schedule was released. For the Chargers, yes, they earned it. They were the 5th seed in the AFC playoffs last season before falling flat on their faces in the Wild Card game vs. the Jaguars. For Bears, Heck no! The Bears were had the worst record in the league, they didn't make a huge splash in the following offseason, and they traded the 1st pick in the draft to the Panthers, which became Bryce Young. Remember, they now released the schedule after the draft instead of before it. So why in the H E double hockey sticks did they put the Bears on SNF. That made no sense then and not flexing that game out made no sense now. SNF and MNF games should be for teams are elite and/or have playoff potential. The Bears don't check either boxes, now nor back in May.

Retrogamer For the Bears, it is the same reason, why say the Cowboys, Steelers, Packers and both NY/NJ area teams i.e Giants and Jets also always get at least 1 SNF or MNF appearance for the last 50 years or (or in case for Sunday almost 20 years). Even when those legacy brand name clubs are crappy and last places in the divisions. So because they are either in America's largest media markets with the Giants, Jets, 49ers or Bears they will always get widespread exposure. Or in the case of the other 3 mentioned historic clubs from Dallas, Pittsburgh and Green Bay, they all have big national/international fan bases.

One thing that you didn’t mention. In the newest TV contracts, they made it harder to flex games. Besides adding MNF and TNF flexing, they now made it so CBS/FOX are guaranteed one half of a divisional matchup. Only one can be in primetime, not the other (outside Week 18.) So for instance, NBC cannot have Giants Cowboys because they already had Giants Cowboys in the beginning of the season.

@@americangiant1003The ONLY reason the TNF package was created was because the NFL Network was struggling to get Cable companies to carry the network, and as a tactic to get companies to pick up the network, signed agreements to air 7 or 8 NFL games a season on NFL Network. Thus the weird situation in the CBS, CBS-NBC, and Fox era where they had to simulcast games on the NFL Network, with the NFL Network having exclusive games some weeks. When Amazon signed for TNF, they didn't want to share with NFLN, but the NFL Network still has that clause in the contract, thus the expansion to Europe, which gives them 3 games, SNF on Christmas eve instead of NBC (NBC gets a Saturday game in exchange), bringing it up to 4, and the annual Saturday Tripleheader during Week 15.

The simple solution would be to stop scheduling by market size and instead go by which teams are the best at the moment, as football is a national sport instead of a regional one. Case in point: the Chiefs-Dolphins game this week should have been a Sunday night game in Kansas City instead of being part of the International Series. I'm not sure of what the thinking was here but the NFL must really hate how the biggest game of the week is going to be exclusive to the NFL Network when many fans are asleep or away from home. As for teams having three straight prime time games, it's happened. In 2010, due to a roof collapse and a blizzard in Philadelphia, a Minnesota Vikings team that was well out of playoff contention got three prime time games in a row. The interesting part is that at least two of those games could have been afternoon games.

While in the NFL does not need market size or so called blue blood teams i.e Cowboys, Giants, Bears, Packers, Jets, 49ers and Packers it should put on the more deserving teams on either SNF or MNF. However due to politics and the old stereotypes of always putting on either the Cowboys (Jerry Jones basically is the real Boss of the league)or the NYC area, LA or Chicago teams at least 1x a year, that is why those teams even as last places clubs get that nod.

Great video as always, but I think there's something that people always forget: The NFL and its schedule makers can't predict who will be good/bad year in and year out. They can't predict when a big name player (i.e. Aaron Rodgers) will suffer a devastating injury. New York, Los Angeles and Chicago are THE biggest media markets in the country. The NFL doesn't care if their teams are good or not. They're the biggest cities in the country, and the bigger the city (or player) is, that's more revenue for the league. Also, the new flex rules have made it easier for CBS and Fox to protect their marquee games and have made it harder for any network to flex games. Yes, TNF, SNF and even MNF have had their fair share of bad games, but we (the fans) don't work for the NFL. We can't fix this, even if we tried.

My biggest issue with the system is that it is a ‘90s system that is being dragged slowly into the 21st century. Streaming is a thing now and fan bases live all over the country not regionally. Sunday Ticket on KZbin TV is a step in the right direction, as I don’t have to buy antiquated hard ware to get it. But to really get the money’s worth, have the networks produce the games and stream for free. Then as an Eagles fan living in CO, I can watch the eagles and the network can get the advertisement revenue. Maybe get rid of SNF altogether and get more views, especially on the East Coast. The game goes off the air after 10pm on a Sunday. People have to work and more importantly, kids have school so they can’t stay up that late. It’s a Monday, you are sleep deprived for the rest of the week. I think at the core, the issue is that the NFL is focused on getting guaranteed corporate payments as opposed to increasing fan satisfaction, exhibit A: Network contracts; exhibit B: the direct TV 30 year stranglehold on Sunday Ticket; exhibit C: Madden.

If anybody paid close attention they could see a fraud incoming. 3-6-1 in final 10 games (including playoffs) couldn’t do anything vs cowboys and eagles, kept it close with bad teams, lack of star power, injury prone players, etc. still it’s 2 big market teams in the cowboys vs giants. I don’t really understand the bills vs giants scheduling though.

@@Coolthings246but they had “The Coach of the Year!!!”. Also they treated their best player like trash and extended a mediocre QB. Problem is, they didn’t really have much choice, they built around a RB like a mid-90s team and didn’t have the capital to get a franchise QB. They are a bad team that overachieved last year and then took the fools gold.

It can't be fixed. All of the nuance, defense and all of the "game of inches" was taken out of it in order to increase scoring and excitement. Unfortunately since the global population under age 40 is now declining the talent pool from which to draw those players for the more exciting game is smaller and so you will have teams that are not exciting to watch. Back in the 80s before even the salary cap I could watch a game and enjoy it even when it was lopsided because you could pay attention to the more detailed parts of the game, thats gone. It was like when you just watch the pitcher versus the batter in baseball and it really understand and watch the contest there. In order to fix it you would have to go back to basics take a massive hit for an entire generation in terms of rating share and rebuild from the ground up. It's not going to happen. So the NFL will in coming decades continue to lose market share and while in nominal terms I'm sure revenue will be up as a share of economies it will be down, as it has been down over the last 20 years.

My idea: Between Weeks 10-17 NBC can flex games every week if they want to. In those weeks CBS and Fox will each have four doubleheader weeks. In those weeks one 4:25 game will be designated as the National game. That game will receive automatic protection. In those weeks CBS and Fox can each use up to two protections for other games. This will count against the five total protections they can use in those weeks.

I'm the same way where I'd prefer watching my teams in the afternoon rather than at night personally. I like some of the ideas, I've heard so far to fix it, but the solution that I've heard so far is the one that college uses where no games have set times 12 days before the game starts. I think that would allow for the 4:25pm and primetime window to get the best games possible and even MNF. They'd probably have to schedule TNF and the overseas morning games. Another solution as well is to get rid of the exclusive game window and make MNF the big game of the week again since that'll be one game. SNF could be a regional window and have 3 games air against each other. Football seems to be at its best when people have different choices of games to watch in the afternoon. Splitting up some of the early games and sending them into primetime would be fun and allow people to not be stuck to one game. ABC would get that big 1 game on Monday nights.

Another point to bring up is you lose games to flex because of the stupid international games. I would rather see the Dolphins-Chiefs game at Arrowhead on Sunday Night Football than their game being played in Germany on a cable network/streaming service i won’t pay for.

They should've flexed the Jags-49ers game to Sunday Night. Two Teams currently among the best in the league. Jags trying to push to 7-2, competing for the Number 1 Seed in the AFC, vs the 49ers, who started off hot, lost the last three, but are trying to pull themselves up after the bye. To top it off, the rumors of throwback uniforms for Alumni Night make it that much better.

Yeah, week 8 was a down week for primetime ratings this year. Speaking of, Monday Night Football beat Sunday Night twice in the ratings so far this season, in Weeks 1 (Aaron Rodgers' short-lived Jets debut) and 6 (Cowboys at Chargers). This never happened until this season. It could likely happen again at least once later in the season (Week 11: Eagles at Chiefs).

How about they go back to the old days - no double-header, where both networks have a 1pm and a 4pm (4.25) and no Sunday night game. The double-header came about because the NFL thought there was too much exposure so they cured over exposure with even more televised games. When I lived in DC if the 1pm game ended, the network would go to another game that was close or going to OT but I couldn't see the ending if the Redskins were about to start on the other network. Like I really cared about missing the first 5 minutes of the 1st quarter or heavens forbid, we don't want this guy clicking back and forth between two networks.

Even though this is radical, I think the solution for SNF in addition to Fox & CBS being able to protect a 4:25 game is to move it off of NBC entirely & give it back to ESPN or have ESPN split the SNF slate with another broadcaster like Amazon much like what happened from 1990-1997 with ESPN & TNT. Meanwhile Monday Night Football moves to NBC ending 50+ years of being on ABC/ESPN. This way all of the terrible SNF match ups are on cable or on streaming (where the ratings aren't that important) & this helps MNF out as well because it means that they will have a better shot at getting a good game because of the fact that MNF is on over the air TV again (and more people can watch) as opposed to cable. Now in regards to TNF if Amazon ends up splitting SNF with ESPN, those games get moved to NFL Network (the best option) or get offered to a broadcaster that currently does not have the NFL (think Apple TV).

Seeing that this is on the anniversary of "FOX's greatest doubleheader", looks like they're going for the same here (except for the fact that the Giants will probably get week one done again, though there is the hilarity of Leonard Williams playing in the same window as his ex-mates), so probably Joe Davis and Moose like Vikings/Bills last year.

I feel there is no answer to this problem. From 1970 to 2005 we had to put up with bad matchups on Monday night. I have no issues with CBS and Fox gaming the system. Also your video did not clarify for me what weeks NBC can start flexing games ? Fox and CBS are already losing games on Thursday night. Back in 1970 it was just Monday night, then in 1987 we started with some Sunday night games. Now Thursday night. One extra game on Thanksgiving. . Based on your potential solution, Fox and CBS and only protect one game during those 9 weeks when they get the doubleheader.

Yeah but we are getting so many Jets games because of Rodgers, so I say let the NFL eat it. I have no idea why we have so much Raiders though. Maybe if the NFL would stop focusing on teams that don't even have a recent history of success and would start rewarding good teams(instead of stories like Rodgers) they'd make good match-ups again. So my basic solution is start focusing on putting successful teams up again, yeah you'll need to flex sometimes but not every week. Don't say well this team is an interesting story (for 4 snaps) and you won't see it all fall apart and you could try to flex them in. Maybe even one team can't be protected/flexed two weeks in a row to help.
