SUNDAY SCRAMBLE! great cars at Bicester Heritage April 2023

"SUNDAY SCRAMBLE!" at Bicester Heritage in Oxfordshire is the subject of this Old Classic Car video. Having attended the Scramble back in January, we were confident that there'd be a great turnout of classic cars at this very popular car event, held in April 2023. Less predictable though was the weather forecast yet, somehow, the anticipated rain stayed away and a very enjoyable (dry) day was had.
Bicester Heritage is situated at the former RAF Bicester airfield. Given that this particular Sunday Scramble! was also St. George's Day, and my grandfather of the same name was based here in the late 1930s/early 1940s, it seemed highly appropriate to re-unite his original WW2 RAF dog tags (id tags) with the airfield, if only for a few hours, and record the moment.
Some amazing cars turned up, both in the central display areas in and around the preserved wartime buildings, and also outside in the public forward parking areas, reserved for any interesting old cars that arrived throughout the day. Vintage cars, classic cars, and modern supercars rubbed wheelnuts across the Bicester site, although this being a classic car channel I focus mainly on the older cars in this Bicester Sunday Scramble video.
I'll include a link to the video I uploaded of January's meeting at the end of this one, together they give a broad overview of what you might typically find at a Sunday Scramble in future.
Highlights include a BMW 2002 turbo, Mk2 Ford Zephyrs and a Raymond Mays-tweaked Zodiac, Matra Djet, Standard Vanguard Phase 1, a very unusual Opel Kadett, a variety of pre-war Rileys, vintage H.E. tourer, Aston DB4 in the public car park, the incredible Bedford mobile cinema, Austin 8 Tilly from WW2, several Bristols including a pair of 400s, a super-original Jaguar Mk2 in grey, a home-built Ford 100E pickup conversion, an immaculate Leyland Princess 2200HLS, a six-wheeled Hustler, a signwritten Morris LD van, and a vast, patina-blessed, Mercury station wagon of the 1950s, to pick out just a few.

My 2002Ti was the exact same orange colour, wish I had kept it now. An excellent video a lot of work getting it ready I think. Taking the dog tags is a lovely gesture RJ. And yes I did watch it all.

Great and varied content as usual Rick , the Rolls towards the end is a 1921 Silver Ghost , so now 102 years old !.The Ghost was in production from 1907 to 1924 so this is quite a late model.The ' baby ' 20h.p model came out in 1922 and was the first to adopt front wheel brakes and the only Rolls ( UK made ) model to use horizontal radiator shutters .This car was registered in Manchester so not far from where it was built in Derby !.

Ahhh, a civilized channel at last! Sunday and live races. I made the mistake of correcting an error stated in the chat and received what I think is an insult. Another wonderful video, Having seen one of my old Warwick Wright Chiswick 205 GTI demonstrator’s (J443KOY) in an earlier vid, you then come across F804OLD which was a car I sold when I first joined the dealership. You’re quite right, it’s fitted with the 1.9 spec alloys which was a popular upgrade with owners but not a factory option on the 1.6’s. At that point was a newbie to the dealership which was a large factory owned Peugeot dealer on Chiswick roundabout in West London, I was given a base spec 309 XE, F900 OLD fortunately I sold it pretty quickly a 205 XS which was superb little car, Thanks for another terrific vid.

40:19 You missed that it's actually a very rare Alpina Roadster S. Many people don't know how incredibly well engineered those cars were in fact, and the Alpina version with its optional LSD and slight tweaks really showed it in the rare cases when someone actually tracked it (of course they're equally brilliant on the road but you can't see that brilliance in numbers in that case). The lap times those things achieved were amazing and far, far more powerful cars with far larger engines like Mercedes SLK 55 AMG were totally outclassed. The Z4 basis was already a fantastic platform with all the fundamentals right (for an open-top roadster with its chassis stiffness compromises...). The world's best professional performance testers Sport Auto found that already the Z4 3.0si was competing against the SLK 55 AMG in dynamics/performance! Andreas Bovensiepen was probably at that point back from working for BMW, having learnt suspension design and tuning from the legends there. So it's no wonder that by adding the LSD and doing his magic to further optimize the suspension he got the Roadster S to perform so brilliantly (and the additional power gave its own small contribution). I guess around those times BMW also lost many of the old suspension gurus, as BMW often had Bovensiepen/Alpina develop some of their models' suspensions as well! I don't know if they still to this day have Alpina develop their suspension setups (in connection with tire design etc.).

E28 M535i was available with the dogleg Getrag, normal 5 speed and the 4 speed auto. Owned a few back when they were a good value used car. Think they look better without the full body kit and like you say, so much nicer than BMW's new cars.

Very enjoyable video, what would I take home 1st the Bournemouth reg Standard Vanguard, 2nd one of the MK2 Zodiac / Zephyr saloons, in 1974 I gave a packet of woodbine cigarettes for one from my neighbour Mr Crawte the car I learnt to drive in. And 3rd the dinky as you say the Escort pick up / ute so cute. There are others like the Princess and the beautiful Mercedes Benz unfortunately lowered...why??? Each to their own I suppose. Not the one for sport cars as such, but you can't beat the curved lines of a sleek E Type Jag, a few beauties there I see.

Too many new cars displayed at these shows, no matter how exotic or pricey. They should have a rule of cars being at least 30 to 40 years old minimum if not older.

I guess some events do have an age cut-off, others are more relaxed with dating, I guess it makes for a more varied display and it's easy to skip the cars/eras not of personal interest. Thanks for checking this one out.
