@@jellycode4949 I don't think you quite understand how Bible translation works. Many modern Bible translations are completely new translations from the original languages. Some are revisions of older translations. This means that the translators start with the translation they are revising and then check it against the original text to see if it accurately reflects the meaning given the changing nature of the English language, and the fact that modern scholarship has a better understanding of the context (and in some cases the meaning of particular words), and of which textual variants are most likely to be the original text than scholarship from a couple of centuries ago. And when you say that the Preface of the Bible says that the verses have been changed since the 15th century, which translation's preface are you talking about?

The Protevangelium of James is kind of fun because it's not straight up gnostic or heretical but has some interesting passages and connects with some beliefs a lot of early Christians had. The weird stuff: at the time of Jesus' birth in Bethlehem, Joseph was fetching a midwife for the birth and as he is returning he seems to see time stopping at the moment of Jesus' birth. It seems to signify the cosmic importance of his birth and is the earliest description to my knowledge of an event where time has stopped: things in motion appear to be suspended in motion and only Joseph experiences this stopping and is able to move as all other things around him are stopped. It contains ideas that Eastern Orthodox and Catholics believe regarding Mary, that Joseph is not her earthly husband but rather an older man, a widower, who has to take the pubescent Mary as wife to protect her virtue as a sort of guardian. This older Joseph is present in tradition and it makes the brothers of Jesus his older half-siblings from Joseph's previous marriage. That explains why Jesus gave up Mary to John at his death as Jesus' brothers were not the children of Mary and thus not her actual children, her only child being Jesus. The older Joseph is an interesting view because it would explain why Joseph is not physically present in the story after Jesus was at the temple at twelve. After that we do not have Joseph appear in the story or do or say anything. Jesus is identified as Joseph's son, but the man himself does not appear.

@psevdhomeАй бұрын
@@LutzWeissmuller Ok. I had not heard the expression "Semi-Canon" in this context. That's why I asked. For the record, I don't think the description of time stopping at Jesus' birth is wrong. I mean it probably didn't happen that way but it's not exactly wrong or heretical. I think as a text it's interesting, because it might be the first ever literary description of such an event. SO it is a really interesting work in many ways. As I stated earlier, it seems to concur with canonical gospels in a significant way: Elizabeth, Mary's kinswoman, is of the tribe of Levi as is her husband Zachariah. So in the protevangelium Mary is also of the tribe of Levi. Because her father Joachim is one of the priests. It's an interesting detail as Jesus is said to be of Judah's tribe and a king, and legally he is through Joseph. But him also being of the priestly line gives credence to his doouble nature, divine and human. THe significance of the priestly line is not underlined or specified in any way, it's not a detail trying to prove anything, but it concurs with the canonical gospels. If Mary's family was of Levites as was her kinswoman Elizabeth, then it confers that priestly prerogative also to Jesus. Also it says that Joseph is an older man. And in the canonical Gospels Joseph last appears when Jesus is twelve. He is mentioned later as Jesus' father, but he himself does not make an appearance. THis seems to confirm, or at least not contradict the idea that Joseph was indeed old. Jesus' brothers being older also makes sense how badly they treat him. If they were younger siblings they would respect him due to him being the firstborn, even if they were impious. Their open disrespect seems to show that they are in fact older and thus can dismiss their wayward little brother. Sorry this became a little essay. I find the text fascinating.

Some thoughts and observations: 1. Gospel of Thomas is useful insofar as it evidences another independent witness to Christ’s sayings. Highly tied in with the idea of a Q or a sayings gospel, although Thomas is definitely not the Q if such a writing exists. 2. GThomas is believed to have been edited numerous times and some sayings may be later additions. This is argued by sympathizers to be the case, about the women becoming men saying. 3. The earliest of these were not written by the person whose name is attached (eg Thomas) - per scholars. We agree with the scholars on these being later forgeries, but the mere fact that scholars say they weren’t written by their attributed author, doesn’t mean they actually weren’t. There are resources on this channel rebutting scholars who make the same claims about the four gospels’ authorship. 4. The talking cross in GPeter may be a misreading of the text. Could be addressed further. There’s a paper by Goodacre arguing the one speaking and walking is “the crucified one”, not “the [literal] cross”. 5. My favorite “apocryphal gospel” is the Egerton Gospel”, an extremely fragmentary text. To the degree to which we have preserved it, it either aligns well with the four gospels, or most curiously, claims a miracle on the bank of the Jordan river which isn’t clearly paralleled in the gospels. AFAIK contains no nonsense Gnosticism.

Allow me to take the time to inform everybody here: the hymen is not a freshness seal. "Without breaking Her hymen," is not how a hymen works. The hymen does not seal the vagina, if it did, a woman could not have her period. This just shows that these men did not know a woman's biology and anatomy. Thank God The Church was persevered from accepting this as canon.

You should also include Secret Mark in a future video about false gospels, as while no copies of it remain, portions of a Letter from Clement is the only surviving manuscript that tells us about Secret Mark. Basically, Secret Mark claims to be a longer and more mystical version of the Gospel According to Mark, but in the letter, only one narrative from from it survives, which is allegedly spliced in between Mark 10:34 and 10:35. According to the letter, it was written like this: "And they come into Bethany. And a certain woman whose brother had died was there. And, coming, she prostrated herself before Jesus and says to him, "Son of David, have mercy on me." But the disciples rebuked her. And Jesus, being angered, went off with her into the garden where the tomb was, and straightway a great cry was heard from the tomb. And going near Jesus rolled away the stone from the door of the tomb. And straightway, going in where the youth was, he stretched forth his hand and raised him, seizing his hand. But the youth, looking upon him, loved him and began to beseech him that he might be with him. And going out of the tomb they came into the house of the youth, for he was rich. And after six days Jesus told him what to do and in the evening the youth comes to him, wearing a linen cloth over his naked body. And he remained with him that night, for Jesus taught him the mystery of the kingdom of God. And thence, arising, he returned to the other side of the Jordan." Nowadays, people would use Secret Mark to imply that Jesus is homosexual or that a group of Christians had thought that he was, but given that it was one of the gospels that were not accepted, and Clement had refuted it in his letter (Sadly, the portions in which he refuted it is missing), it is obviously biblical fanfiction, probably made by someone who fantasizes sleeping with Jesus Christ in *that* terrible manner.

Actually, it is wrong to say that the Gospel of Thomas is a gospel because it is actually a Logia, a collection of quotations which, according to the gospel itself, were "the words of Jesus when he was still alive". Most of the quotes from the gospel are the same as in the synoptic gospels, but some new ones are humorous and somewhat nonsensical like "A lion becomes a man when it eats a man, so woe to the man who was eaten by the lion". At some point, Thomas 114 has been added to the end of the Logia (yes, not all copies have it), which is apparently a continuation of Luke 10:25-37 because Peter says "Send Mary away from us, because women are not worthy of this" and then Jesus explains why Mary is allowed to stay. But this passage has been slightly corrupted and it is not certain what the quote originally said when it speaks of the intention of turning Mary "into a man" "so that she also may have a living spirit as you men will have", but we can still suspect that the "living spirit" possibly refers to "eternal life" based on what Paul has written. Originally the "gospel" of Thomas was known from the Greek manuscript which was damaged, but the Coptic text that was found later is the most complete version. According to researchers, the fact that copies of the text have been found on opposite sides of the Mediterranean indicates that it was popular to some extent, but lost its popularity when the early Logias were replaced by the more advanced Gospels. However, the text is still worth reading, funny and a window into early Christianity, but it cannot be considered canonical, nor does it contain any "secrets about the real Jesus", only a collection of random quotes, and has very little gnostic influence.

The speed at which people read these works and incredulously point out that they are too late to be eyewitness events, and that some of their sayings or stories are too silly sounds exactly like atheist arguments against the canonical gospels. The issue isn't that these things are too crazy for God to do, it's that these texts outright contradict each other and the 4 gospels.
