“Linda Manzer is a renowned guitar maker. Her instruments are played by superstars Carlos Santana, Paul Simon, Pat Metheny, and many more.
When Russia attacked Ukraine, Linda felt exactly the way many of us did: saddened and distressed. What could she do? How could she help? She decided to do what she does best. Within a month she had completed the Sunflower Guitar for Ukraine, a one-of-a-kind acoustic guitar with an inlaid sunflower in the blue and yellow of the Ukrainian flag.
She considered auctioning it off and giving the money to a charity. But instead, she came up with a plan she hopes will have more impact:
The Sunflower Guitar is now on a long and winding journey to Ukraine where it will be gifted to the Ukrainian people. Along the way, Linda has arranged for it to pass through the hands of many wonderful people, including superstar musicians, who will play the guitar, express their solidarity with Ukraine, and encourage their fans to donate to the cause.
Already, the Sunflower Guitar for Ukraine has been photographed in the hands of Geddy Lee, Pat Metheny, James Taylor, Brad Paisley, Bill Frisell, Arlo Guthrie and Graham Nash, Canadian music legends including Bruce Cockburn, Gordon Lightfoot, Blackie and the Rodeo Kings, as well as Schitt’s Creek star Noah Reid.
All money raised by the project will go to the people of Ukraine via the US charity $1k Project for Ukraine and the Canadian charity, the Canada-Ukraine Foundation.
The goal is to raise at least one million dollars.
Linda Manzer: “I built the Sunflower Guitar for Ukraine when the invasion began as my way of working through the distress I felt for the Ukrainian people suffering from this brutal war on their country. My hope is that this guitar can inspire the global music community to give generously to humanitarian relief.”
