Sunglasses can kill your eyes - UV tests How to do cheap one, Please share dont damage your eyes!

Genuine Raybans and Calvin Klein (vintrage and NOT knock offs as I used to collect them and fly using them [cue stupid music - "take your breath away"] ) were tested.
We all buy cheap sunglasses and even expensive ones. I went swimming with a really "cool" pair of new Raybans and forget to take them off so they are now being fossilised in the seas. Hey, but after this I wondered whether it was divine providence as Rabans came out crap in my simple tests.
This test shows up some hidden problems we may have with sunglasses not filtering out harmful UV rays which can cause cataracts, partial blindness and eyesight degregation etc. This test was done using a cheap strong UV banknote torch and really cheap disclosing papers which reset themseves after use. You can ruese the available sunlight but here we used a well-defined UV source. Some may argue UV A and B were not exactly tested, to which I shall reply - This was NOT a scientific test it simply shows UV from the sun and a UV source being blocked, attenuated or not blocked etc. Shown working in the strong Thai sunlight. If you want to do a phtometric test - hire a lab with accurate A/B sources

Make sure the papers look like mine as mine worked I cannot vouch for any others as they are all the same except prices vary
Search term - "sunglasses test" currently reveals stacks of them here is a sample but the URLs are stupidly long you'll get quite a few example however,

and UV 100 LED torch reveals many 398-400 nanometer torches like mine
replace the battery bay with a rechargeable single battery, why buy AAAs or even rechareagble AAAs,?? (it should fit) and buy a good charger!

In a darkened room, I'll set the glasses down upside down on a flat surface so that light can't get under the lenses, and then I aim my blacklight flashlight at a lens making sure no light is going over the top. All I'm doing here is looking for light on the other side of the lens. Hopefully there's none. If one wants to be safe buying cheap sunglasses, safety glasses are the way to go.

UPDATE I just got some "aviator" style sunglasses for a few pounds off LAZADA in Thailand and wowow they were the worst I've ever seen, and over 500 people have them, they did not stop ANY UV at all. So, I put up six pictures of them working badly and the seller immediately closed the site - they have no doubt hundreds of similar sites as there is no compnay name check in any Ali express Lazada site YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED

all in lazada.co.th, and any amazon store will sell them as brands are simply generic all chinese, so if it looks like mine it will work like mine (torch, 100 UV led) and the papers were bulk as well whole lot under 10 USD here in Thailand, your eyes are more expensive, thanks for the comment NOTE even strong sunshine can work the papers reset themseves in 1 minute or 2 ,

Were there written on the bad ones any UV protection sign? I mean can a new pair of glasses have a fake sticker of uv protection?

yes on some of them from china unless you buy those disclosers and test them you cannot be sure if they are fake just copies or good looking cheap ones that have NO protecion most of the ones I keep now cost less than 3 USD in thaialnd check out lazada thailand and see for your self If you buy a UV torch yoou dont need sunlight to test them

Well I learnt a lot form your video today which I can use in the future. Just thinking out load but I would have thought that skying glasses would have been equally efficient at stopping the ultra violet rays but I guess there isn't much snow where you live so couldn't test a pair. hahah yes indeed good comment I'm build a winter time simulator in a freezer cabinet with a TV down one end with snow scenes on it, and a drinks cabinet - it's toooo damn hot here!! You can carry out tests anywhere try it!
