This was super helpful. Thank you! I thought it was great that you offered some potential trouble-shooting tips along the way. I was having an issue with my simple model. The shadows seemed to be all over the place, and I realized it was an issue of scale. I changed my model from mm to meters and it was fixed!

hi, I get the initial problem of 0 hours then when I flip the surface it is still all blue and shows 2000 hours but still just blue, as I want to show the surface of a building with windows to show light that enters
@PhilippGalvanDesign
@PhilippGalvanDesign 11 ай бұрын
Have you added the building as shade (context). It seems that your calculation doesn't pick up any shade. Meaning that every cell gets the same amount of light. 2000 hours... So there is no range. If every cell gets 2000 hours then every cell has the same colour. (Blue)

Normally this happens when your test surface is not facing the sun. For example if the ground plane faces downwards than the surface has nothing to record (basically as if shadow all the time). Select your test surface or surfaces and use the flip command to check and change its(their) orientation.

Another question for you would be, should I place the geometry in the center of the solar grid? and how can I make the solar north coherent with my geometry's north? Do we have to that manually? Thank again!
@PhilippGalvanDesign
@PhilippGalvanDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Julien, Regarding orientation, i normally try to have my models placed with the correct north orientation into my rhino file. If this is not the case it's not a problem at all. The sunpath component has a slot right on the top called 'north' where you can either input an angle as a number (0-360) or a line which represents the real north in your model. Regarding position, i try to have my model somewhere near the origin, but the sunpath comp. also has a slot called 'center_pt' where you can input a point which you can place anywhere in your model. further you can scale the the sunpath too with 'scale' providing a number to multiply the current scale. hope it's more clear, otherwise i think i explained the concept in one of my previous videos.

I'm currently applying the same script onto my own model, but somehow the surface flickers when its in perspective view, and on top view, the building somehow turns all blue. Is it some settings i have to adjust? Thanks in advance
@PhilippGalvanDesign
@PhilippGalvanDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicholas, some things to check. Flickering: The script creates a new mesh surface. If the offset off the new mesh (settings on the sun hour tool) is very small then the new mesh and the original surface will 'overlap' and rhino will have troubles and this can cause flickering. I sometimes hide my original model in rhino. If the test surface or surfaces turn blue then it's either that your surfaces are facing downwards. Use the flip command to flip them correctly. Or the test time you have chosen has no sunlight like 3 AM in the morning or 11pm in the evening. It can also be that your test period has no sunlight coming from the top. Another good practice is to keep you model is near the origin of the drawing. If a model is very far from the origin it can also cause problems Hope that helps. Let me know. Cheers Philipp

Thank for the Video. I have one question. I create a building model(facade) in grasshopper (there are so many small diamond panel wrapping around my building) and at some point, it makes all of them so slow. Do I need to bake my model first in to Rhino or is it actually fine if I just do it in the same grasshopper file. The Brep part I just connected all my (loft)model in one Brep and connect to the geometry. It is my Uni project and I am just a starter so I don't know what I suppose to do
@PhilippGalvanDesign
@PhilippGalvanDesign 3 жыл бұрын
I think, first you need to consider what you want to visualize or test with this study on your model. This study is not supposed to be used on a final model but on initial massing model which can lead to an intervention or facade design.

Thanks a lot, this was something I am was looking for a while now :) Here is my question: In the Sun path component we have to hoys (Hours of the year probably) and this means that the script will generate the sun exposure heat map at this specific hour of the year. Yet when we introduce the Analysis period (from a certain date to a certain date) this creates a period (hours, days, or months). Therefore my question how can we can the sun path of a period, let say 8 hours in one image? Thanks, Cheers !
@PhilippGalvanDesign
@PhilippGalvanDesign 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Julien, Short anser: watch my video from 20:20 which should answer your question. (calculating a half year period) Long answer: The analyse period component has 3 outputs, in this case, I'm using the HOYS (hours of the year) output which gives me a list of all hours in the period. For example, if your period is 9 hours long, it gives you a list with 9 numbers representing the specific hours. Connect the HOYS from the analyse period component with the sun path HOYS input it creates a vector for each of the 9 hours. The sun hour analysis tool takes all vectors and sums the results for each area. in this case then some areas would have 9 hours of sun and others only 8 to 0 hours. This range is then represented as the colors on your test surface. hope it's more clear. Best Philipp

Hello ,the video was great! it helped me a lot in the current project am working on (rotating solar building) but I would like to ask some questions. Am relatively new to grasshopper and am trying to add the azimuth and altitude so I would like to know other than using panels to find numerical results is there a way to have a diagram near the building as you did in the video about the sun hours. Also is it possible in grasshopper to have a simple cube rotate and at the same time have the sun path calculate its context_(can block sunlight to the test_geometry)?

I haven't had any issues so far, except that my graphic card can't handle certain viewport modes when I want to save the viewport as an image in a large size. @@PhilippGalvanDesign Ok, actually troubles with viewports is something I am used to as well in since ever. SubD might be nice but in first place it's priority number one to keep the system running. hello Philipp, thanks for this great tutorial! I have a question concerning sun hours, so I don't really understand how we can see the analysis of a period. Can we use the same way to analyze at a specific hour of the day?
@PhilippGalvanDesign
@PhilippGalvanDesign 3 жыл бұрын
@Razan Atwi - Yes I think didn't explain it good enough. So for example, if you measure one specific hour of direct sunlight with this tool using my example building the output would be that some Areas have direct sunlight the others don't. meaning that some Areas have 1 as a result others 0. (yellow or blue) Now, the analysis period tool feeds a list of all hours in the period into the sun vector tool. This then creates a list of sunlight directions (vectors) for each hour. The sun hour analysis tool takes these vectors and tests each sun direction with the test surface. From all the sun direction in a period, let's say 8 hours, some areas might get all 8 hours direct sunlight and others only 7 or less, some areas might get 0 hours of sunlight. the heat map then colours the each Area depending on how often it was hit by the sunlight. yellow for 8 hours - red for 4 hours - blue for 0 hours and all the colours in between. hope that makes sense? let me know if it's more clear? thanks for the question. cheers philipp
