Great analysis. Suni Lee is clearly not done with the Olympics yet, and the US team will certainly need her on the uneven bars. Having two former Olympic all-around (AA) champions will be a first for the US team-or any team, for that matter.

She doesn’t do a triple + double Wolf turn anymore. Only one wolf turn is getting scored per routine so she’s removed the double wolf turn this quad.

Thank you. It is more exciting as Trials grow closer. I was in two Olympic trails (88,92) and I beleive it is more intense than the Olympics. Once you make the team it is go all out for medals but if you dont make the team, you cant do that. Very intense. Rock on.

Suni's coach said that she basically did the last half of her bar routine for Nationals. Obviously they hope she tack on the first half before it at trials.

Yes, without the Toe on layout reverse heckt she had to re-arrange a few things to face the correct way but I noticed after those adjustments is was more like her last half. I am curious if she will make any more adjustments before trials. Rock on.

That makes sense, actually. I was very confused watching her in the nationals because I felt like she was doing some pretty hard skills but her routine seemed oddly short. I hope she tacks on more skills and more scores!

I think bars aren't as interesting now as they were in the 80s. Now it's more like a high-bar routine with a second bar thrown in and made minimal use of. I liked when they made full use of both bars.

It is interesting. I just analyzed Shilese Jones bars and she did one skill on the low bar. They still do incredible gymnastics but I prefer for both bars to be used in a balanced and innovated way also. After the Olympics the rules will change and that will be interesting what trends come about. Rock on and thanks.

Thank you Lance for the succinct but in depth analyses. I’ve never done gymnastics, but with figure skating, it’s my go-to sport to watch. Hope Suni will increase her bars D score to be competitive enough to make the Olympic UB finals (unfortunately, other gymnasts with higher D values are predicted to place top 3; chances are high for Shilese to make UB EF if Shi goes clean with her 6.5 D). I am hoping Suni ditch the layout Jaeger-full attempt and increase her D with a layout Jaeger to Pak to Maloney (I can only dream). Will this strategy bump her D to 6.0 or higher?

I agree with you. I would like to see Suni put back in her neb Ava or Tun laid out rivers heck but I think it might be too inconsistent for her at this time. That’s just a guess. The layout front full seems even more inconsistent because she does not rotate that much it would be difficult to swing out of properly. The top girls are really on their game so whoever wants to be competitive has to have a great day also. It should be exciting.

Unpopular opinion: I prefer Suni’s gymnastics to Simone’s. While I appreciate Simone’s level of difficulty, I’ve rarely seen her land the dismounts on any apparatus except bars. I like Suni’s balance of difficulty and solid execution, as well as her overall artistry.

They are definitely different styles. They both utilize their strength very well. Simone-her power and fast twitch and Suni her patience and elegance. The current rules value difficulty over all other aspects and this helps Simone a lot. I am curious if the rule changes that happen after the Olympics will emphasis other aspect of the sport more. I am skeptical but we will see. Rock on.

@@OLYMPIANTEACHES-bh6gp There will NEVER be a change in the COP to reward other aspects of the sport more than the acro because this is a SPORT after all NOT a DANCE or MODELLING contest. So, although dance and other elements can be added and appreciated on beam and floor, they will NEVER outweigh the very ESSENCE of the sport.
@OLYMPIANTEACHES-bh6gp

@@aliciamcdonald7105 I understand your perspective. The tittle of our sports is mens and womens artistic gymnastics. It is acro but it was founded on artistry. Since the elimination of compulsories and introduction of open ended difficulty it is natural for the acro level to go up and its good that Acro define out sport - as you said, it is acro, not dance. I just wish the judges had a bit more wiggle room to mathematically reward someone that is exceptional beyond what the skill value is. I understand this is a very difficult task as it is very subjective. There are bio rhythms to every sport and they may introduce more structured artistry but I agree with you that gymnastics will always be more defined by acro and difficulty. Thanks for you thoughts and all my best.

@@aliciamcdonald7105 I am not sure my other reply sent. Anyway, thank your for your thoughts and I understand your perspective. The tittle of our sport is Mens and Womens artistic gymnastics and it was founded on artistry. Without compulsories and with the new introduction of an open ended difficulty I think it is natural the difficulty skye rocket and I am a huge fan of the skills they do these days. Its just incredible to watch. I just wish the judges had more wiggle room to mathematically reward an athlete when they have exceptionalism beyond the value of the skill. Its a challenge with subjectivity I understand. Of coarse the gymnastics will always be the highest value as it should. If two athletes do the exact same routine but one does it in a personally exceptional way, I believe that person should win. This is almost an assumption but mathematically, there is currently not much wiggle room for the judges. Thanks again for you thoughts and rock on.

@@OLYMPIANTEACHES-bh6gp *MEN's and womens ARTISTIC gymnastics* and therein lies the problem for many people. ALL the people who GRIPE about artistry this and artistry that seem to forget that men's gymnastics is ALSO CALLED ARTISRTIC yet NO ONE seems to be fretting about the lack of 'dance' choreography and artistry for men. WHY NOT? In addition, these same people seem to forget as well that it is ONLY beam and floor that has artistry as an element not vault and bars. I think if it were left up to some of you all, women would be shaking their fannies at the beginning and ending of even vault and bars and why not, it is ARITSITIC gymnastics after all. STEUPS!
