It’s nice to see a Japanese warship that landed upright. Usually they’re bottom up, especially the battleships
@smc1942

Is it because battleships and their guns are top-heavy?
@jakurdadov6375
@jakurdadov6375 Жыл бұрын
@@kawaiikindcake1023 I don't know that they are usually bottom up. They often roll over when they sink because they get holes shot into them. It depends on the depth of water. Some of the Pearl Harbor casualties rolled over in shallow water, but Bismarck sank about 3 miles and landed upright. I have read the theory that the hull presents less friction than the topside, so they tend to right themselves if they sink through enough water. Again speaking of Bismarck, the main armament gun turrets were held in place by only gravity, so when she capsized, her 4 largest turrets fell out. Because all ships are designed to be stable, with the center of buoyancy above the center of gravity, the heavy machinery (boilers, turbines, gearboxes, etc) is placed deep in the hull to avoid a top-heavy condition. Robert Ballard has written several excellent books with many fine photographs of the ships he has found on the ocean floor.
@patrickmccrann991
@patrickmccrann991 Жыл бұрын
@Jak Urdadov The ships in Pearl Harbor rolled over because they were torpedoed on one side, causing them to flood on that side. This is the case of the Oklahoma and the Utah. The West Virginia counterflooded quickly thereby settling on an even keel. Both Yamato and Musashi were torpedoed on both sides and both flipped upside down and broke in half. Bismarck's stern broke off after sinking; however, she righted herself and rests on her bottom.

Kagan? Kaga, Akagi, and Soryu were destroyed by a U.S. dive bomber strike at the battle of Midway Island. Hiryu survived for a few hours and managed to further damage Yorktown. Then it was destroyed by another dive bomber strike. Yorktown was heavily damaged and evacuated. Yet it was deemed salvageable and repair operations were underway when it and destroyer Hammann were torpedoed and sunk by submarine I-168. It was a tremendous achievement to find these historic shipwrecks deep in the world's largest ocean. At least try to name them correctly. The first president of the United States was not George Warshingtun.

@@patrickmccrann991 Both Hiryu and Soryu carried an equivalent aircraft complement as Akagi and Kaga-about 65 aircraft. The higher tonnage of Akagi and Kaga was largely due to armor and a heavier structure, because as you noted their original intent was battlecruiser/battleship.

Ambush? Not so much. Even though we knew they were going to go after Midway, they were doing it to lure our fleet out there for the long awaited climactic battle. They had the numbers and veteran pilots with the Zeros which were superior to our Widcats. Our pilots got lucky in finding the Japanese ships, when they did between strikes and without proper air cover as the Zero, CAP had been drawn down to take out Torpedo 8. Had the CAP been up, they would have had a better chance at disrupting our dive bombers. Then again these things seem to somehow come together at the right time at the right place, when it seems victory is unlikely for the underdog.

@@duckygaming3536, just ask the men on the USS Arizona that were reduced to atoms on December 7, 1941. Even now it's hard to feel sorry for what happened to the Japanese. They wanted a war and they got one. It just didn't quite go the way they thought it would.

It would be nice if you would correct the spelling error in the title, and give the actual name of the vessel in question. That might be more respectful, don’t you agree?

It still seems crazy and downright suicidal that Japan thought going to war against America seemed like a good idea to them. They suffered from the same flawed mindset that many other countries before had. They mistaking my thought that through they were much smaller and weaker that they assumed they were the ones who cared more and only they had the inner strength to prevail. The same mindset that led to the Nazis eventual demise.

Actually, the Kaga, Akagi, and Soryu were sunk near each other, although at somewhat different times. The Hiryu was sunk much later in the day quite a distance from the other three.
