Surprised there wasnt any talk of the references to the mythological sirens/ siren song. Sirens are mermaids that would sing their alluring song to lure men from their boats and ultimately drown them. Notice the many references to mermaids in both her costume, set design and some of her movements in the video. Just another cool layer to the songs meaning that still applies to what it means to be a female idol. Luring men in with a captivating song and gaze but in reality its a farce, a trap. Anyways, love this series! Cant wait to see more. I just checked out the new Pentagon MV apparently referencing an old childrens tale about frogs?? Id love to know more if theres more to know. :)

I also thought about that! But in my opinion it's not about luring men but about fame and the idea her youngerself had of it is to be a celebrity luring her into wanting to become a one but now she realised it was just a trap

@loen2629

This Interpretation is very good, it all makes sense. The song has probably more "layers" and meanings than just one, and this could easily be one of them. My Interpretation is more based on the mythological side of the song tho: The dance, the humming at the beginning/the "lalala" in the chorus and the makeup are all based on the actual Sirens (it seems like that atleast). Sunmi has alluring, mystic and dangerous sides to herself (the other seemingly emotionless Sunmis/"Siren-Sunmis" in the MV are portraying them) and in the beginning she is afraid of those different sides she has so she tries to hide/run away from herself. The "Siren Sunmis" are also dressed way more eye catching and sexy while her pretty and innocent self that sat infront of the mirror is dressed less interesting/extravagant. In the song lyrics it shows that she accepts those cold but intrigueing sides and tells the boy (the listeners/love interests/other people) to be cautious of those sides and warns them not to get too close otherwise they´ll may get hurt since she is bad at showing her emotions ("Even when I´m sad I wont cry"). She may also feared being criticized for those not so pleasant sides of herself since she is in the public eye and koreans tend to be quite judging when it comes to celebrities. So she also doesnt want to Show those sides to her haters because she fears the consequences. But the lyrics now confidently tells the haters to "get out of her face" and tells them that she now embraces all of herself. In the MV she looks at the rose in the cage wich also could be referring to her being alluring but dangerous and hurtful to those around her if they get too close/touch her (roses are symbols of love, they are Beautiful but they have thorns so they can hurt). The rose is in a cage because she tries to keep this side of herself caged and hidden so nobody will fall for her and get hurt (thorns). Then she begins to look at those sides of herself a little closer but still fears them and runs out of the house (the house could be a Symbol for her mind or herself in wich all of her different sides "live") but the warning bands keep her from escaping (its impossible to escape from your own self). Then she accepts all of her different sides even the dangerous, alluring ones and begins dancing inside the cage (that stands for herself), that means she finally embraces all of the sides that she tried to hide from herself and anyone else. Idk if that even makes sense and I´m also not korean so I could easily misinterpretate the lyrics but those were just the Things that came to my mind while watching the MV and reading the lyrics :) Edit: Sunmi also got out of the shower (towel on her head) and one of the "siren sunmis" came crawling out of the shower/bath tub so you could interpretate this as sunmi trying to "wash off" this side of her self and get rid of it so be "pretty" and appealing to those around her but this side always comes back no matter what she tries to do.

Hmmm I wouldn't have gone for this interpretation personally but it is interesting all the same. I took the more obvious interpretation of siren = mythological beautiful creature that lures men to their death. I thought she was saying that she is essentially a heartbreaker, maybe not intentionally so but this is just who she is, so don't get close, don't make up fantasies about how she is going to be, because she doesn't even cry when she's sad. She is not going to be who you want. Kind of like the film 100 Days of Summer? Even the melody at the beginning sounds haunting like a siren song. I find your interpretation really interesting though, it fits with the video having two versions of her, and knowing Sunmi it is probably intended to be a double meaning. I'm surprised you didn't mention anything about the siren/mermaid imagery with the femme fatale lyrics, though.

I don’t know there’s so much that Sunmi’s been through so I don’t think the interpretation is a reach at all. She joined Wonder Girls when she was fairly young and fans were always criticizing her because she’s naturally skinny (still criticized). Then she started forcing herself to gain weight but the whole thing was just too much on her mentally and now she’s back (and happier) and trying to send a message with this song. The whole mermaid thing is great towards the theme of the music video but has a lot to do with her past

my criticism wasn't that deep guys. I just meant I was surprised he didn't include the more obvious interpretation along with his own which is a bit different. I think his interpretation was interesting. I wouldn't call it a reach. Sunmi herself came out with a comment that actually confirms what was said in this video lol

It doesn't mean you wrong because of this video. I think it's about a man. the part about the past and future herselft are right, but they are warning her about a "boy" (somebody) and as you can saw in the MV they try to make her bold and even more intrepid which match the metaphor of mythology's Siren about being beauty and attractive but also dangerous. That's why at the beginning of the MV she thought she was beauty enough to something but the bathtub Sunmi warning her about "I told you that you're not". But also It seen like a declaration that she's not going FIT IN A MOLD, not for a man neither for fame standards.

it's actually really sad because Sunmi gets so much hate from jealous keyboard warriors...some of comments I've seen on her insta are vicious and they've basically bullied her into admitting she's not beautiful because she's 'too skinny' and it's terrible for her mental health. I hope she can ignore all the hate and ridiculous demands from people who don't even hold themselves to the same standards.

The first time i read the lyrics I thought it was about an abusive relationship (bc of the "boy") but then I started reading the comments and this one really get my attention, the comment was saying about her live where she says she's reading a psychological book and it says about everyone's selves (ex: the ego self) and the comment said the song was about her inner selves, the she who is looking at the mirror is her ego and she's trying to escape from her others selves, more precisely from her false self (the red). I liked this theory so much and I think if we put your theory and this theory together we can get a reeeaally good theory

Herself maybe being the hater? Also, I think it is a story of a woman in general. Especially in Korea but also everywhere else society wants you to be beautiful, act like a flower, everything like you explained. In the end it could be seen as I am going to do my best even when I am still in a cage of societies expectations, because she is smiling/ has an "evil" smirk (could also count for men though).

I feel like the song and mv have two different meanings. The mv is about what you already mentioned and the song is about a mix of things but mostly about the same guy from Gashina and Heroine. It’s the end of the trilogy after all.

My favorite thing about Sunmi's singles' titles is that they have double-meanings and both meanings apply accord perfectly with the lyrics. Gashina means "beautiful woman", "flower", as well as "bitch". Heroine is both the main charachter and the drug. Siren is both an alarm and a mermaid.

I think people who know a little about what Sunmi has been going through since her breakout solo debut (outside of JYP) might agree with your interpretation a little more, rather than the following the mythological siren route. Sunmi has stated before that she overate during her solo under JYP because she personally felt that a sexy image was only achievable through being curvy, which she isn't. (She has stated that how slim she is isn't wasn't because of dieting but just how she is and looking at how she looks during Wonder Girls, I'll have to agree with her and not believe the more common eating disorder issue we see pop up with some other female celebrities.) Because she found that her unhealthy overeating didn't even result in a major weight gain for herself and how hard it was for her, for 'Gashina' she just went with the body she felt most comfortable in, which is gonna be thinner than her JYP solo body. She then started getting attacked because during interviews people would ask her about her diet or what she did to be so slim, but her response was always, "Nothing. It's just how my family is". They interpreted it as her lying or trying to show off because 'how dare she make us feel bad because we can't just eat what we want and be that skinny'. On both the international and domestic crowd, she was spammed with messages that theorize about how she has an eating disorder or diets and then calling her ugly for being so skinny when before they were calling her beautiful for her thin frame. She obviously began to get tired of it that she started clapping back at the comments. I think obviously the song has been written to have a variety of interpretations but I'm not surprised she said the song was for the haters because she has felt a huge backlash over her natural base weight and body frame when it's not even like she's telling people about an unhealthy diet to get that weight (like some other female artist do, like 'I eat one potato a day', because they struggle with body issues brought on by society and the industry). It's like two faces of the same coin. Female idols get shat on for being thicker naturally due to humans having different body shapes (Ailee, early Luna, Wendy, etc.) so they diet unhealthily. Female idols who are naturally thin get shat on for being too skinny and not womanly because no boobs/no butt...so they overeat or struggle in other ways. Their bodies aren't their own anymore.

It sounds too much like something ABBA would sing. Catchy as hell, but annoying as hell too. That kind of melody is just not my cup of tea. When you explained lyrics, i like them more now, but melody.... All we need is disco ball... Just NO. First time i watched MV i thought that she is portraying herself as Siren, u know, from greek mythology, because she was so cold looking but sexy in most scenes. So i interpreted her running and opening doors, running again, but every time finding that Siren like herself who has her lured and now keeps her forever entrapped and under her spell till eventually she will die.

Very good explanation and video. On my first listen to the album, I thought it was warning the listeners not to come any closer lest you be caught in the siren's song (so to speak) unable to escape, since the album's melodies are so ephemeral and the soundscape is reminiscent of someone drowning. Clearly the lyrics have a different meaning. It's actually kind of unnerving, like we're actually the ones trapping her in the siren song instead of the other way around. Her music and lyrics are really deep, hoping to listen to more in the future. Kudos

It's like IU's "My Old Story" imo. A letter to her younger self and people against her. I love it.

Makes sense when you piece to 2 sunmi characters in the first chorus and the ones in the rooms it really comes together and makes sense I always knew this wasn’t a siren song like the mythology creature however just didn’t know what it meant massive thanks now I understand what was in the back of my head this whole time

i like the interpretation about sirens as mythological creatures, that she’s warning a boy/man to keep his distance from her because she will hurt him but i like your interpretation as well, it brings more meaning than just same old relationship theme

Do you guys take request? If you do, then can u explain the song No More Dream and N.O by BTS? I know you guys have done a lot of BTS explanations already and these are older songs, and that you're trying to balance with other artists' songs, but there's a lot in these songs that even I have trouble explaining so I could just refer to your videos if you do explain these songs. Thank you :)

You guys have to do a video explaining the song 'Naughty Boy' by Pentagon, I think it has a very deep symbolism behind it and I would like to see you guys talking about it.

When I first read the title of this song & watch the MV I thought about Siren's lament, Korean webtoon also Kdrama The legend of the blue sea. Both webtoon and Kdrama story is about mermaids

Wow thank you very much for this explanation! I haven't thought of this interpretation yet.. but I always thought about what it's like for celebrities when they can't express their true emotions because they are always on cameras.. Like when idols do fan signing, aren't at least some of them having a bad day? Yet they always smile and interract with the fans, I wonder what they think about it after they get home, are they tired of it, or is it normal to them I wonder.

2:01 could be another meaning relating to a typical siren: doesn't have any regrets of killing men, regardless if they're her lovers or not this meaning could also be a meaning to the lyrics in the bridge "I ain't cry no more"
