You know that place where guys go to show off their expensive in-car sound systems with bass bins larger than their rims, and they just play EDM or trap or something, and you're just like...meh. Just one time I'd like to rock up in a massive 18-wheeler truck, with a low loader stacked with cabinet speakers 20 feet high, connected to a turntable, and you just pull a Sunn o))) album out, hold the vinyl aloft and let it catch a glint of the full moon, fire up a smoke machine, drop the album on the turntable, drop the needle on the vinyl and watch as all their spotty faces melt as the full force of a single drone chord rips a hole in the space-time continuum and sucks their Mitsubishi Evos and Subaru Imprezas into the swirling void, as I laugh hysterically. Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

Even if you think Sunn is a one trick pony, or that it’s not “my kinda music”... everyone should see Sunn perform. It’s an experience like none another (just bring extra earplugs as they are the loudest band I have ever witnessed. Louder than Motörhead, Swans, MBV and on n on )

sorry but i gotta disagree about SUNN being louder than MBV. i've seen both bands twice (SUNN in their original two-person lineup, and as a full-band lineup; MBV on their original loveless tour, and on their first reunion tour), and MBV is the only band i've ever seen that left me unable to hear for nearly a week--no exaggeration. just excruciatingly loud. never saw motorhead, but did see swans--who were average loud. i remember reading somewhere that MBV has intentionally begun playing at lower volumes, as of their last tour. anyway, i definitely agree that SUNN is a must-see band--they were definitely loud, and the druid ritual performance/visual component is entertaining at the least. so is the fact that nearly half the audience was laying on the floor in a womb of sound, when i saw them in the full-band setup. anyway, cheers.

I also don't know if this qualifies as music by the dictionary definition. It's just tones. Incredible, powerful, soothing tones. Again I dont know if I fully understand it but I like it. Its definitely recording Art. It's not commercial. Its not musical. It's just sound in its purest form. These guys kind of cornered the market on druid/dirge/gregorian chant inspired metal. i love the way the press-release says that, if you're astute enough, you'll find the album to be a spiritual experience. which is essentially a very pretentious way of them saying, if you don't like the album, you're stupid! ha!

It's reminiscent of the quote attributed to Jodorowsky: "If you are great, 'El Topo' is a great picture. If you are limited, 'El Topo' is limited."

Yea this is how they have drawn people in and they probably die laughing at all these idiots that cough up money so they don’t have to feel dumb when they hang around all their other pretentious friends that are “liking” shit that everyone knows is just pure crap.

to be fair to Sunn, i suspect these statements are a bit tongue-in-cheek. they're consistent with the kind of elitist hyperbole which is a fairly common trope in metal. unfortunately, when mixed with their other, more arty influences, the joke is maybe lost.

or maybe it's a bit like watching Frasier. when you first watch it, you think Kelsey Grammer is doing a great job at lampooning the pompous, wealthy intelligentsia. but the more you watch it, and the more you find out about what Grammer is like in real life, you start to wonder how much of what you're watching is really Frasier and how much is actually Grammer. maybe they don't even know anymore.

This is the immersion into the thickened depths created by Sunn O))) that none shall ever swim upon. There are clots most foul, but then there are dense drifts that soothe the ache, while presenting a better path beyond a simplistic world. Hail the drone: Hail Sunn O)))!!

I'm thinking about bands like Death or Dream Theatre! With thousands of notes... And They are fricking awesome! But then Sunn O)))) with one or two notes they can blown your mind!

Weird comparison. Death and Dream theater have much more variability in sound, and I could listen to those bands almost anytime or anyplace. This stuff is kind of neat, but very mood specific.
