Hello David. I used to surf around Sydney in the 70's and I was in a surfing competition with Jeremy (singer) and his brother, Pete Oxley (bass player). Jeremy was a happy blonde kid with a very big groofy smile and a lot of talent out. In 1980, a friend of mine told me that our old surfing competitors, the Oxley boys, had their own band called Sunnyboys. I checked them out and felt quite proud of them. At the same time, I couldn't help but notice the heaviness of Jeremy's lyrics, which didn't fit my impression of him as the grinning blonde kid. He and his brother got to be popstars in Australia, but unfortunately schizophrenia ruined Jeremy's career and his reputation. I'm quite sensitive about Jeremy and the Sunnyboys, which is why I will only read comments by familiar names. One bad comment about this band might spoil my day. There's a beautiful documentary about Jeremy called 'The Sunnyboy'. With the help of his wife (a nurse) and his brother, the Sunnyboys made a return in 2012 and were able to function for a good ten years. They've disbanded only this year. Jeremy had been in the wilderness since The Sunnboys' implosion in the mid 80's. However, he made a courageous comeback in the early 2010's and kept the train rolling for a decade. Jeremy's a tough guy but he might have been a little too fragile for America at the time.

@Robbo766 Thank You for the information. Mental illness almost ended XTC but fortunately Andy was still able to write & record .. just couldn't stand performing. I worked here in the states for Arista & was quite proud to successfully market Starfish by The Church & The Sunnyboys sound every bit as good as them. Glad the singer found peace in his life. ✌️

@@davidellis5141 I have always found it hard to separate The Sunnyboys and The Church. They both mirrored eachother (unintentionally), and they did do a few concerts together. I'm sure both bands would be perplexed by that perception, but many of us have always seen them as cousin acts. Cheers, Hayley

@I_was_a_Countdown_Kid-zc4fq The guys in The Church & their US representative made sure I received a Gold record for my work promoting Starfish & that was really nice of them as I had departed Arista by the time it was certified. I have it on my wall proudly. Thanks 😊

Nothing about this song inspires any interesting commentary. I was happy with this tune and thought Jeremy would be the next big thing. His voice isn't the best on this track, but there's always room for improvement. The footage of those kids reminds me of my own misspent youth in early 80's Sydney. Good old day.. Though I wouldn't have thought so at the time.

Sydney band but a fair bit of Melbourne in that clip judging by the Conti (connie) jackets being worn. Made and sold by a bloke in Brunswick Victoria from memory. I wasn't allowed to get one, as according to my parents only "roughnecks and hoodlums" wore them. LMAO

My husband used to wear one back in those days. The film used in this video was from a 1980 b-roll footage of Melbourne kids. Little Heroes used the same film for one of their video clips around the same time period. I only know about this obscure film because some of my old friends appeared in it.

Hey Col, I left Countdown in 1985. My last show was hosted by Paul Weller during his Style Council days. I was getting a bit too old for the show and I felt it was time to leave it behind me. Paul Weller's dry personality (at least, that's how it came across on the show) and his Council friends looking tired and annoyed made me decide to not come back to the studio. I had a bit of a crush of Corey Hart and Paul Weller made some disparaging remark about him. At that moment, I decided to never return to that studio again. Three years later, I was back doing some work on The Factory and then Countdown Revolution. I've also returned to that studio during my career as an interior designer. I did some work for Noel Crombie of Split Enz fame. He sighed when I told him I was an ex-Countdown kid (''Oh no, not you! You and your sister!''). Never say never, huh?

I don't think this song is awful. I didn't back then and I certainly don't now. The sound of the video is pretty poor. Like a lot of Sunnyboys songs, this one has always struck me as emotional and troubling. I heard a lot of The Jam growing up in Melbourne. I can only see a very slight parallel between Paul Weller and Jeremy Oxley. So slight that it's hardly worth a comparison. I think of Jeremy as just Jeremy.

Hey Sasha, I actually subscribed to them for that reason. There's a lot of songs I have an emotional attachment to, and the second these songs start, I am back to wherever I was at the time. Some of them still cause me pain and sadness. It's such a relief when you get a reaction channel that's neutral. I actually trust the Haniers with certain songs that are very close to my heart. Sunnyboys ''Alone With You'' and The Church ''Almost With You'' I can't listen to without feeling that same emotion. Little Heroes ''One Perfect Day'' is another song that I will ask the Haniers to do later.. Do Re Mi's ''Adultery'' actually hurts when I hear it.. I can laugh at some comments, but other disparaging comments about a song can feel like a personal attack.

@@liveitup67 Hi Gillian! I completely forgot to subscribe to them. Done now! 😛 Yeah, I got my list of dear personal classics too. I know what you mean about certain songs taking you back to a place and time. Not too sure if ''You Need A Friend'' does it for me. It's a nice song, and I remember the video on Sounds (remember Donnie Sutherland?) I don't relate to that kind of energy. If something doesn't work for me, I just move on and let it be. I don't really care for dumping on somebody else's art and self-expression. Have you been well?
