I haven't watered my zz plant for 3 months and it's still looking happy and healthy. Before bringing it indoors I left it outside under the deep shade of a tree and forgot about it for a year. It survived 40c temperatures without water and was still looking good. When I finally remembered it I decided that anything that can survive that treatment deserves to be repotted and brought indoors.

When my husband and I helped her kids clean out her apartment they said we can have something that was hers. Idk why I picked her zz plant but I'm glad I did my friend isn't alive anymore but her plant is 🥀

Surprisingly, I had 12 shoots in 3 weeks. I decided to blend some crushed eggs shells in the the blender. It became sandy, I mixed it with the soil, and since then the plant grows exponentially. I even think its over growing. It gets enough light outdoors, and I water once a week in West Africa.

My plant was outside in a very sunny spot, and I watered it almost every single day at that time because the soil was drying out so quickly on the daily… The front of my apartment is south facing, and it just gets beat up by the sun… I had to tuck the zz plant in the corner so it would limit the number of hours of sun and I also make sure to rotate it so one side wasn’t getting all of the attention! I did learn about this adjustment the hard way because I did get a few burn leaves unfortunately.

Usually in one pot there are several rhizomes- making several plants. To buy a large potted Zanzibar Gem is very expensive, and I discovered it was cheaper to buy a few smaller plants and pot them all together in one pot. I gently separated all the rhizome clumps from my small pots, and used potting mix with lots of perlite added. The perlite improves drainage. If you have a tendency of over-watering, I suggest when you pot up your Zanzibar Gem, to add perlite to the potting mix. These plants definitely put out more shoots when living in bright light. I also mist my plants, and in that add a tiny amount of liquid fertiliser.

Hi I was interested to see your post about Z Z plants. I wasn't sure what a Z Z plant was, and now I know. I have this plant growing in my garden and it is about 6 feet tall with many branches. Here in North Australia we know it as the Zanzibar Bush and grows very well. Because mine is a mature plant it doesn't need extra water, just relies on the rain. In fact I have to prune it often to keep it under control. I inherited this plant and am not that fond of it. But obviously many people are. Each to their own.

I got two ravens zz from Whole Foods too this summer (thanks to you and your YT channel!) And both got those yellow spots like yours, one was way worse than the other. I treated them both with neem oil, like they had a fungus, and both now look healthy like your healthy one. I'm inclined to think that the spots were a sign of a fungal issue or that the cold damage made them more susceptible to fungal infections.

I let it sunbathe one day because I got gnats from overwatering and wanted to help the soil dry out faster. Probably left it in direct afternoon sun for about three hours and it scorched the leaves. It went from being a rich waxy/shiny green to very dull now and six months later still hasn't recovered or put out any new shoots. I'd be very careful of too much direct light. I still feel so bad for it getting hurt like that. It's not dead, but looks sickly and the burnt leaves will never restore the glossy green it used to have.

I love ZZ plants! I have noticed that ZZ plant gets two types of shoots. One is a larger shoot that will unfurl into a normal shoot with many leaves. The other is a very small shoot that usually only develops two leaves. These often die. I'm not sure why it does this. But it seems to be normal behavior. I have several ZZs and they all do the same thing. My mom was an over-waterer so I taught her to water around the edge of the pot not in the center. It helped her a lot. Maybe it will help someone else. I have one very large ZZ that I water this way. For all my others, I water them through like my other plants, discard any excess water, then wait until they are completely dry before watering again. That is usually about 14-16 days.

Thanks Nicole! I love ZZ plants. I have a large ZZ plant, medium ZZ plant and a medium ZZ Raven plant. I find them a great, easy plant to grow. Hope you gave a good night! Gerry 😎

Thanks for this informative info! Sadly in the summer I put a zz plant in a really big bot. Like an 8 in. Pot. But I only have about 4 shoots. It’s way too big. But now it’s November, can I transfer it to a smaller pot right now? And what soil mix do you recommend? I’ve been using 50/50 perlite and Lowe’s potting soil. Not sure if I like it. Please help.

I actually just did the same! And I did report it into a smaller pot and it seems to be doing well now even though it's not growing season. I figured the risk of repotting it was worth it because it looks like it was going to die anyway. I would rather at least try and save it than just let it go due to root rot from being in a pot that is too big. This was a raven ZZ plant that I did this with. I hope that helps. Good luck!

I have a zz with yellow leaves. The roots aren’t rotten and the soil is dry so I guess I haven’t watered enough in this warm weather. Should I cut the yellow leaves off at the bottom of the stem? Tks

Thank you very much for this informative video on the ZZ plant. I have a big one in my office pushing out lots of new growth, and a small one at home without a single new growth in the many months since I bought it!! Please try to add the temperatures in Celcius.👍👍👍
