This is helpful. and I know what you mean about the roots being so bound in the pot, I made the mistake of leaving it in too long and the only solution was to bring out the sawzall, but I was able to make other plants for my kids and their friends, I’m also loving the stem supports, I’m heading to Lowe’s, my new stingray elephant ears is waiting in my bathtub, I’m treating it with the humidifier and light but leaves are dripping, thank you for showing me the easy fix!

This one was already looking spectacular, but you did such a great job to bring out even more of its beauty. 👏👏👏 I also loved your clear explanation and the paper technique for supporting the fronds while handling the plant is definitely a great one to remember. Hi Julia I’d like to know Haley to propagate a zz plant 😍
@Mycityplants2 жыл бұрын
Hi Gran, There are a few ways to propagate ZZ plants: Division, Stem and Leaf propagation methods. ***Propagating ZZ plants from leaf or stem takes time. So be patient :) DIVISION - instant result STEM propagation - FASTER 1-2 month or so LEAF propagation - LONGER 3-4 months DIVIDING Each rhizome (bulb) is a separate plant. You can take your plant apart and pot separated peaces in different pots or group a few together in one pot. Ok to cut roots if needed (no more than 20%) so the plant fits well in its new pot + provide more room for roots to continue growing. LEAF/STEM propagation You can propagate stems or leaves in soil or water. I prefer the water propagation method. Water propagation allows me to see what is going on + I feel this method is a bit faster :) When propagating in water, change water frequently. If the water gets cloudy, wash the container with dish soap before filing it up with fresh water. For faster results, place cuttings in a Bright Indirect light - direct long sunlight exposure is not recommended unless you place them by the East facing window where the Morning sun is very gentle. Stem Cuttings Cut off a stem at the base of your plant, making a straight cut with a sanitized knife/scissors. Place the cutting in water. When the cutting has grown at least one inch of new roots, it’s time to pot it in soil! Leaf Cuttings Cut off a leaf as close to the main stem as possible, taking a little bit of the leaf stem with it. Place the leaf’s stem in water. When leaves have grown at least one inch of new roots, it’s time to pot it in soil! Green Luck & Thank you for watching 🌱

Just bought my first ZZ, a small one that is already bursting out of its 4 inch nursery pot. Obviously needs Repotting, but my question is how deep to plant it. In its current pot The bulbs/tubers/I don’t know what to call them are about half above ground. When I move it to a new pot should I put it deeper so they are buried, or do they need to stay exposed like that? Thanks in advance, and thank you for your wonderful tutorials!

Hi Melody, You may repot your ZZ in 6" pot. You do need to pot the plant too deep. Set it up so the bulbs are covered with soil. Green Luck! 🌱 Thank you for watching!

Re-pot the plant at the same depth in the soil as it currently is, just in a bigger and deeper pot so the roots have more space to grow in the soil.

@Mycityplants2 жыл бұрын
Hi Kim, This plant is about 3 years old. To get it in a full shape and keep your ZZ plant healthy: - Feed Spring - Summer. Here is the video when and how bit.ly/3teZEaw If you are in the US, you may purchase the plant food we use - the best in my opinion mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer ** any other fertilizer - use half of the recommended dose - Rotate frequently to provide equal light exposure to all sides. ZZ plants do best and grow faster in medium-bright light. - Prune back any outgrown stems. - Clean leaves. *For weekly/bi-weekly cleaning I use Swiffer amzn.to/3iWPLuI Watch how I do it here kzbin.infopfKaGJvbxg0 *You can also use this microfiber gloves amzn.to/3gMyjfu Short video about it kzbin.infoMLNOd4JbRhk * Deep cleaning once every 1-2 months - use wet paper towel. You may also add a drop or two of dish soap in 20oz of water - helps to remove any pest presence - I would also recommend using Neem Oil amzn.to/2un4fcz for all your plants as a preventative measure during Spring-Summer or when you have a sick plant at home. Spray leaves (top and under), stems and top soil. Spray lightly once every 2-3 weeks. May your plant grow happy and healthy! Thank you for watching ! 🌱

@Mycityplants2 жыл бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching 🌱 It takes 3-5 years to grow a ZZ plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) from a 1-2 stem plant into a fully grown plant. They grow on average 4-6 new stems per year and gain about an inch or so in diameter per year. The most active growth period is Spring to Fall. In tropical climates, ZZ plants will continue to grow all year round.

I am so glad I found your videos. I just adopted a zz plant and the stems are spread outwards, not like the plant in your video with the straight stem at the bottom and the stem towards the top bending outwards maybe due to the weight. Is there anyway I can make the stems align straighter than they are? Not sure if using the stakes alone would help ..
@Mycityplants2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tia, Thank you for watching! 🌱 Cascading is a part of this plant behavior :) Some cascade more, some less. The only way to keep this plant in a "straight" shape is to prune older long cascading stems. Pruning also helps to keep the plant in a fuller shape.
@kbm44092 жыл бұрын

I have a schefflera that is strictly in pon and it is growing like CRAZY!. I would like to know if I could take it out of pon and repot it on soil with a layer of pon at the bottom. I'm afraid because the roots are water roots and transferring to soul may kill it. What would you advise?. It is growing so fast. The stalks and leaves as well. I have it in a regular pot sitting in a reservoir of water. It's about a 10 inch pot. I'm so afraid to disturb it, because it is so healthy in the pon, just really growing super fast. Thank you.
@Mycityplants3 жыл бұрын
Hi! The plant will adopt and grow in soil but I think, if the plant is happy, leave it as is. You may prune the plant to any desired shape/width/height if it grows too big. You can also propagate cuttings in water if you want to have more of schefflera in your home. Thank you for watching 🌱

ZZ plants don't like to be rootbound and whenever I purchase them they're rootbound, potted in 100% cocoa coir, and need repotted. When I repot them, should I remove as much cocoa coir as I can, or place it all in the larger pot with newer, better soil around it? I've heard it's not good to grow them in 100% cocoa coir, is this true? My many other ZZ plants are potted in a mixture of potting soil, bark, and perlite and do great.

I did something so so stupid, I almost can’t talk about it. My beautiful ZZ plant had three stalks that were much bigger that the rest of the plant and I trimmed them down halfway down their stalks. It looks terrible!!! I’m still in shock at my dumb move. The ZZ plant is in an eastern facing room and there’s been no growth really this entire season. However, last year in the same location it had 6 new stalks so I know the light is fine for it. How do I promote growth? Should I trim those stalks down to the ryzome? I need a ZZ plant doctor. Please help!

Hi Yana, Thank you for watching our videos. Don't be upset. Look at it like the ZZ plant got a bad haircut BUT the good news is, just like hair, it will all grow back 😀 Yes, cut the stems all the way down to the ryzome. You should feed you ZZ plant every year during its active growth period from early Spring (March) till Fall (September). We feed our plants with the plant food that can be used anytime of the year as it is a very gentle formula, and you can get it and feed your plant now for just a couple of months. Then start feeding it again in March. Plant Food: mycityplants.com/products/all-purpose-fertilizer Video "How and When to fertilize plants": bit.ly/3teZEaw May your plant grow happy and healthy!

I have those same supports, but I'm afraid of puncturing the bulbs. It feels like there's no empty areas to stick the supports in.

Hi Aldrin, Yeah, can be challenging.... In this case you may try these round plant stakes amzn.to/3h1o7NQ as they can be placed closer to the pot's edge. If there is no room there as well, may be it is time to repot your ZZ 😀 Green Luck & Thank you for watching 🌱

Would it be better to remove the bent stems and allow new growth rather than supporting them?
@Mycityplants3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Yes, the plant can be pruned. The owner of this plant wanted to keep the stems as they are. How to prune ZZ plants video is in the making. ‼️ Thank you for watching 🌱

I've only had my ZZ plant for 3 weeks. The leaves look green and healthy, but at the base where they meet the stem some have a thick brown crust. Is this a pest? How can I treat it?
@Mycityplants6 ай бұрын
Hi! Thank you for watching! If you are referring to the "leaf-like" wrapping at the bottom of the stem, this is not an issue. It is a protective cover for new young stems. Once the stem grows, this cover can be removed if desired. Green Cheers & May your ZZ plant grow happy and healthy!

@@Mycityplants Thank you for responding. No it is not "leaf-like" it is a thick brown crust. If you share an email, I'll send you a picture.

My boy Zen isn’t absorbing water well, water runs straight through and the leaves are thin and dry. Would you advise keeping in same pot but adding new soil. He’s root bound and could use separate pots, however I dont want him to go in total shock since it’s winter.
@Mycityplants2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Thank you for watching 🌱 You may use "bottom" watering method for your plant. All you need to do is set your plant (be sure it has drainage holes) into the bathtub, sink, or another container and fill it up with a 2-3 inches of water. Wait for 15 to 20 minutes, the plant should absorb the exact amount it needs. When you are ready to repot, chose a pot with the drainage that is 2-3 inches larger than the pot it is in right now. Green Luck!

Haii. Can I know how the self watering pot functioning? Curious. A few of my plant always dead when i go to vacation. My brother didnt help me with watering it while he at home😭
@Mycityplants2 жыл бұрын
Hi! The self-watering planters will definitely help and there are will be no need to ask anyone to look after your plants:) Plant uses water from the reservoir when it needs it. On average, reservoir needs to be refilled once every 3 weeks for medium size plants. I think this video will explain a bit more about how to water plants in self-watering planters bit.ly/3bWSmRs Thank you for watching 🌱
