+cait andrews that was a tricky shot as I had to look away from the drone and keep the drone rotating at a constant pace so when I sped up the video in the edit it wouldn't be jerky

i expected more from those expensive equipments, man it seems like something's off. dunno maybe not the result of those equipments but the editing process tho.... im not an expert or the guy with camera, im just viewing this from my POV as common viewers n giving a feedback out of it. its like the there's less adventure in this video. it looks like just some random shots, sliding camera n eagle's eye. i cannot understand what u wanted to deliver to viewers from this video.. the scenery? if just wanted to show the scenery.. to me it looks pretty flat. maybe u should tried to build a story from your shots even deeper, visualize your story. and then tried to color graded ur footage plus an anamorphic ratio. it will makes your video more lively n more adventourous n more epic tho. this one tbh. its so flat. maybe the music is also the problem. anyway keep up the goodwork n please forgive my bad english.

Equipment is a lot less important than lighting and when we filmed this video it was cloudy the whole time and grey. That's why the colors don't pop like many of our other videos. I didn't spend a ton of time trying to compensate with color grading because it's impossible to completely compensate for flat lighting, especially with JPEG based video from a GoPro (all the drone shots). Also, to do color grading well it adds a lot of time to the editing process and I don't like spending more than 20 hours of editing a video like this because it's for fun, not for commercial purposes. Point taken about the color and story though. As 80% of the shots were all taken around the same ridge I did try and weave it into a story of us going to the hut but in reality it's really just a lot of scenery shots spliced together in somewhat of a logical order (to the hut > around the hut > back down from the hut)
@applechecker33
@applechecker33 8 жыл бұрын
There are two things which really throw me off. First of all and most important: None of the glidecam-shots are in focus and you should experiment with color-grading.

Yay just found your channel! looks like some great adventures I've got to watch. I've just started hiking and recommend trying the pinnacles tramp in the corromandel (if you haven't already). its a big slog up there but once at the top of the pinnacles it's like being on top of the world, they have an 80 man lodge 45 min from the pinnacles where we stayed the night (we took the 4 hour hike on the way back down the next day). I'm doing the tongarioro crossing in three weeks and can't wait!!. it's great to see people from overseas living in and enjoying new zealand. growing up I never really appreciated what an amazing country we have. I do now! ! I look forward to watching more videos. ☺

+Good Life glad you love the videos, we have actually done the pinnacles, it was great! You'll love Tongariro, if you want to turn it into a two day trek I recommended staying at oturere hut overnight and finishing the crossing the second day. It adds about 1.5 hours to each day but splits the crossing in half and the section of trail to oturere is one of the best sections of the whole trip. oturere hut also has spectacular sunrise views of Mt Ngauruhoe - it glows orange and is next to a crazy looking waterfall.

What a video again ! Big fan of your channel, it makes me fly to New Zeland every month, Love it! I notice an interesting comment by +Poptree below and I want to react. +Stoked for Saturday, this is not a critic at all but a point a view. I have to admit the first couple of video you made for this channel 2 years ago moved me. They were so well done, it was not the gears really but the storytelling was amazing. Visibly guys you are naturals in terms of narrative structure. I don't want to bore you with the "why", the analysis behind (I can if you ask me to) but I just want to say : "IF, one day, you integrate a part of a story line in your movies, I'm sure it will be amazing !" Again, wonderful video, I can't wait to see the next one !

+Vincent Price thanks Vincent, I have thought a lot about doing more work where the story and characters are a more prominent component of the video since most of our videos are scenic or action with no narration or dialogue. The part I struggle with is the planning that goes into something like and the worry that it might take away from the experience if I was to be to focused on making the video itself. That being said I would like to and perhaps our move back to Canada might provide some opportunities for that, we will have to see. I do really like the 3rd video in our living a kiwi life series because I feel it has a really great story element to it compared the others, we should do a bit more of that. I would be happy to be "bored" by your analysis btw!

+Stoked for Saturday Thank you for answering and sharing your opinion. I totally agree your 3rd episode is the best in terms of narrative arc, I missed up the numbers in my last comment, I'm sorry. I also agree in the fact that building a story around a scenic or action video will be ressources and time consuming. Depending how much your a perfectionist, it can totally spoil your experience. I will be glad to give you an analysis about how episode 3 is so special. Leave me a week, I will comeback to you. Cheers!

+Vincent Price your video is AWESOME! Thanks so much for taking the time and putting in the effort to share your opinion. I'll try to keep some of this stuff in mind for future videos to make them better. It's definitely difficult to capture organic scenes like the one of Jenna in the car. I might have gotten a little lucky there ;)

Great video. Beautiful places. Subsrcibed. But why some shots almost unfocus (0:12 for example). Is it lost on post in video editor, or it's just lens bug?
@Stokedforsaturday
@Stokedforsaturday 8 жыл бұрын
Could be one of 3 reasons and hard to isolation how much of each 1. It is probably out of focus because I was rushing and tend to shoot while I'm on the run and sometimes miss focus 2. All the slow motion shots are shot at 720p and scaled up to 1080p so they will always appear a little blurry if you watch on a nice screen 3. KZbin compresses moving video with lots of detail very harshly and often creates artifacts and blurring with glidecam video. It's annyoning

Love the video! Epic drone shots and I loved the BTS you posted. How did you do the slow-mo shots? 720 at 60?
@Stokedforsaturday
@Stokedforsaturday 9 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Nye yes 720 @ 60fps. Then upscaled to 1080p in the edit. Drone shots are 2.7k @ 60fps downscaled to 1080p. Timelapses are 4k @ 30fps and some non slo-mo glidecam shots are 1080 @ 30fps. Complicated and annoying. One day I pray for everything to shoot 4k @ 60fps and make my life way easier! :)

+Poptree Thanks for the feedback, we don’t have any narration in this one but have put some details in the description and there is a behind the adventure video for this this one that goes into a bit more detail about the place and where were were. The location is Sunrise Hut in the North Island of NZ. Ruahine mountain range close to Napier, it’s about a 3 hours walk to the hut from the carpark. We also have blogs for almost all of our videos on our website. The sunrise hut one is here: www.stokedforsaturday.com/2015/11/weekend-escape-to-sunrise-hut/
