Wanaka has no shortage of awesomeness and Rob Roy Glacier & Roy’s Peak are definitely high on the list. Both hikes are relatively easy and very accessible. With New Zealand and Wanaka’s booming popularity you will find a lot of people fighting for parking at Roy’s Peak though. Try and do it in off-hours. Rob Roy Glacier is in Mt Aspiring National Park and is a bit of a drive. Make sure to pack a lunch so you can wait for chunks of glacier to brake off and come tumbling down the cliff.
About the Series:
Living a Kiwi Life is about a Canadian couple (me and Jenna) who have lived in Canada all our lives and made the decision to move to New Zealand having never gone there before. We quit our jobs, sold our houses and cars and left everything we knew to explore an unknown.

We don't publish videos much anymore. It's a full time hobby to push out videos on the regular. We'll still make them just much less frequently. Also we never started the channel to get subscribers. Just wanted to document our activities but did so in a way that others might want to watch it too ;)

Awesome to see another vid from you guys. I visited Wanaka the other mth and sadly it was way busier than when I was there 10 years before. Yet to do either walk as flooding stopped us in a hire car once checking out Rob but especially want to see Roys Peak, absolutely stunning. Hope you are both well. Enjoy!

Thanks for the tip on the typo (fixed now). Yah i think it's common to have the road to Rob Roy not passable due to heavy rain. It took up a couple tries to get up Roy's peak as the first type we couldn't go due to lambing season, the second we went up but clouds never cleared but it worked on on the third attempt. It is crazy busy now though, I blame Instagram for a million posts of the same photos of Roy's peak and the Wanaka Tree.

Stoked for Saturday What typo ;). I love NZ and Wanaka is so beautiful but as you said it it's inevitable that word gets around to how glorious Middle Earth is. Funny story with the Wanaka Tree. I had been waiting years to photograph it(see I'm part of the problem as well) and the minute I got there a group of about 20 tourists on paddle boards arrived for photos. I was like you've got to be kidding but luckily they were only there for a few minutes as I had restless kids with me and we had to get to our next destination.

haha you edited your original comment didn't you, sent me scanning the all the other comments to see if I replied to the wrong person on the typo. Well maybe with the paddle boards you got some unique photos rather than the exact same photo everyone takes of the Wanaka tree by itself :)

I believe it's in the spring but not sure exactly when (Feb-June sounds like it should be fine). If you do some googling on "Roy's peak track", or call the Wanaka tourism office you can probably get a more specific timeline. If it's closed it's not the end of the world, Isthmus peak in Wanaka I would say is on par with Roy's peak and way less busy. It's the walk featured in our "weekend in wanaka" video.

Another beautifully filmed video - nice to see Wanaka again - we're back living in Tasmania again but spent a couple of years in NZ and summers down that way. Are you guys doing the slo-mo with the Canon? I've got the MK iv and have just gotten hold of an 11-24 f4 which while not as fast as I'd like is brilliant for filming in 4k given the crop factor of the Canon. I'd be keen to hear about the resolutions that you guys use on your MK iii. Thanks again
@Stokedforsaturday
@Stokedforsaturday 7 жыл бұрын
We are shooting the slow mo on the MK iii at 60fps at 720p. Far from ideal in terms of quality but that's the best the MK iii can do for slow motion. You're in a much better position with the MK iv being able to shoot at 60fps at 1080p and you have the right lens for it. I considered getting the MK iv but I would have to replace my 16-35mm with the 11-24 and was a little pissed that Canon decided to have crop factor for full frame camera when shooting video. I'll likely be switching to the Sony A7s iv when it comes out provided there is no crop. I also expect it to be able to shoot 4K @ 60fps which is what I've been waiting for before upgrading cameras. The MK iii definitely feels old now when I use it. Still a great stills camera but video specs are lacking (except the colours which Canon is top notch at). If I switch to Sony I will miss Canon colours.
@FloNoTrail
@FloNoTrail 7 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting. I never considered 720, but it actually looks fine. It's true, the MKiv is better in that respect. I only ever shoot in 1080 if I need the extra wide-angle, but now with the 11-24 that's no longer such a problem. I'd been thinking about the Sony A7s 2 which as far as I know doesn't have a crop, but the GH5 seems to be all the rage at the moment (as long as you get a really wide fast lens as it has a 2 x crop because of the micro4/3 format). Like you I'd really miss those Canon colours. Even with a neutral colour profile in video the video comes out usable with little correction / grading. Thanks for taking the time to answer in such detail. All the best
@Stokedforsaturday
@Stokedforsaturday 7 жыл бұрын
The 720 looks fine as long as you're not watching it on a 60" 4K tv ;) Almost got the GH5 but was a little concerned about low light capability as a lot of time we are filming in the forest where the high iso is helpful, also the wonky autofocus doesn't (even though I don't have autofocus now with the mk iii). I'll continue to play the waiting game until something comes out that has enough of the features I want to retire the mk iii
@FloNoTrail
@FloNoTrail 7 жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. I think it's too early to change systems. Sony has its limitations as does Panasonic. Something will come out in the next year that overcomes all the limitations of current systems - maybe a Canon. Until then I hope for a decent firmware update for the 5D to lower the crop on 4k
@WoDNolz
@WoDNolz 7 жыл бұрын
Awesome video as always! One little thing though: On my big screen it looked like in a lot of shots either the focus was a little bit off or compression killed a lot of details. In a video that lives from being visually stunning this does actually matter imho (other than in some random vlog or an educational video etc.). Do you see it too or is sth wrong with me? Maybe a higher bitrate helps ;)
@Stokedforsaturday
@Stokedforsaturday 7 жыл бұрын
+WoDNolz you spotted my pet peeve! What you are seeing is because any slow motion shots (most of this video) had to be shot at 720p due to the limitations of my camera. When watched on a large 1080p tv or worse a 4k tv the whole picture looks soft and mushy. The drone shots should look sharper as they were shot at 2.7k. it's annoying but not much I can do to fix it until I get a better camera or stop shooting slow motion.....
@WoDNolz
@WoDNolz 7 жыл бұрын
ah that makes sense! (Actually just got a new 4k monitor) The timelapse at 0:33 also was brilliantly sharp! Well I hope you can get a camera soon that shoots at least 1080p slowmotion then :D Till then I'll enjoy every single one of your videos in 720p nevertheless ;) Keep up the awesome work!
@Stokedforsaturday
@Stokedforsaturday 7 жыл бұрын
haha thanks, and yes that timelapse was in 4K. Been mixing resolutions for a while now - a little annoying... I've actually been waiting for a camera that shoots 4K at 60fps. Hoping Sony A7siii will do it. If not the Panasonic GH5 does but is not a full frame camera.
@WoDNolz
@WoDNolz 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah! The sony cameras are amazing! I'd personally go for the a7 r series instead of the s though, if I had the money, since I am more of a photographer than a videographer :D But for videos the a7 s's are really nice! 4k at 60fps with that sensor quality would be mindblowing ;)

Good idea but I've been waiting for the A7s iii to come out this fall actually. I'm banking on it shooting 4K @ 60fps. That's what I want to replace the canon with.

GoPro doesn't do the justice to places where you go. Everything with gopro looks blurry,out of focus, soft? Not sure which is the best word to describe. Also have you considered to try fixing GoPro fisheye distortion, some color correction and color grading? Just a little, nothing too crazy for the pop and mood, I feel it would give your videos so much more life. Those GoPro shots looks so flat... I'm not being negative, but trying to give a little constructive critique if it's worth anything. Love all your timelapses with 5dmIII. Keep up good work. Amazing Videos, makes me wanna go wonder around in mountains.
@Stokedforsaturday
@Stokedforsaturday 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the feedback, the only GoPro shots are from the drone at Roy's Peak, they are definitely flatter and have less dynamic range than the other shots. All the shots look soft/blurry probably because you are watching on a large monitor or 4K display. Many of the shots were filmed at 720p unfortunately because that's the highest resolution the Canon 5D miii can shoot at for slow motion and 90% of the video is in slow motion. I'm hoping to get a new camera this fall. I've been waiting for a full frame camera that shoots 4K @ 60fps. Hoping the new Sony A7s will do this.
