Sunrise & Top Maropea Huts - Overnight Tramp in the Ruahines

On this trip I head up into the ruahines to visit Sunrise hut, and carrying on to Top Maropea Hut for the night. On the way out the following day I stop by Waipawa Forks Hut.

Good morning again. I think from memory, if you head up towards the Armstrong Saddle from Sunrise, you get access to the edge of the basin looking out to Hawkes Bay, and then lean over the edge, supported by the wind. Freaky, but exciting at the same time. Cheers for another great episode. Looking like I've got some binge watching to do. All the best.

Lovely walk Joseph and you presented it well. I was there in Feb and had similarly windy weather, esp along the ridge from Sunrise Hut. With limited time and gale force winds I didn't go far along towards Armstrong Saddle as it was just too dodgy. After spending so many nights alone in huts it was good sharing with others - several family groups too. Lovely walk on the Swamp Loop just before the car park next day. Such a beautifully graded track so it's easy to see why it is so popular with families or less experienced trampers. How on earth did you keep your GoPro/tripod from being blown away??? In those winds you did well keeping it from becoming airborne!

Also... what macpac pack is that? what's your thoughts on it?

I have a Cascade 75 liter pack. Its got a lot of internal space and I use it for overnight trips up to 3 night trips. One downside I find though is it doesn't have a huge amount of compartments, just 2 at top, 2 side pockets and one at the back, (along with the main 75L as well), I would prefer a few more separate spaces for items. I haven't had any issues with it though and don't yet have any reason to buy a new pack anytime soon.
